"Dynamic Island"

It just sounds ridiculous and somewhat infantile.
The naming of Dynamic Island is actually really good, I think.

It’s descriptive, and catchy. Perfect.

As a UX thing, it’s a very nice addition and iOS interaction choice…

But. Visually… it’s more grating the more I see it. I much, much preferred the notch; as it was less tall, and did not have the distracting line above it that shows screen information, and just draws more attention to the giant hole of useless space in the screen when reading or watching something.

:/

If one was designing an interactive screen for a mobile phone for the very first time, would one pencil in a dynamic island? Would it really be classed as a must have feature?
It obviously is a feature necessitated by the hardware not being able to go under the screen in a proper way yet. But that still doesn't mean it is a bad feature.

EDIT: @daveathall You laugh-reacted at this reply and I am curious what amused you about it and if you have any way to dispute what I said.

I agree. I upgraded from an iPhone 8+ to an iPhone 14 last month and i can’t stop seeing the notch. I though after a month I’d be used to it.
The notch is way better than the dynamic island. It's like a gaping black hole staring at you and you can't turn it off which is complete insanity.

Quite simple. When Fantasy Island goes away I will upgrade to latest Pro Max. Until then, cannot see the point unless it extends range of calling or provides significant battery life improvement.

I really dislike this big pill "dynamic island" crap, even the notch, while annoying, is better than this. I'm not paying to have this show up on all my games and movies.

Bedazzeling a turd doesn’t make it NOT a turd.
This entire dynamic island thing was a last minute stop gap. It was just going to be a large open hole. And the developers saved it from itself.
Once apple has the under the glass camera, sensor system all of this dynamic island will be a lost relic.

Exactly. We’re paying the highest price per pixel of any device on the market. Yes the folding devices have larger screens and higher price tags. But they still surprisingly cost less per pixel.

Imagine your nice bright beautiful 65” 4k television at home having this giant hole in the left side of its screen.
Would that upset you? What if you were playing games on this display? Wouldn’t those lost pixels annoy you?
Wouldn’t to take away from your entertainment pleasure?
Arguing a 65” screen and this phone are an unreasonable comparison?
No.
When you’re laying in bed watching your favorite show or playing a game. Isn’t the screen the same size as your 65” at say 15 feet away?

The dynamic island is a fad, it will fade. The legacy of its actually superb implementation of a terrible idea. That legacy will continue on. That’s the only thing we’ll get out of this situation.

It's bad design masked under an animated notifications bar. Until they figure how to make faceID work on an edge to edge display, this is the best they can do.

Apple & stockholders measure success in sales, and iPhones sell like hot cake, so to them it's a success, to the point they even included a useless notch in Macs.
