I'd say that is just normal battery degradation. I do not believe it has anything to do with your battery charging habits.
But as I posted later in this thread:

1) I used my launch day 13 Pro primarily with wireless charging for a year and it was down to 90 percent.
2) Gave my 13 Pro to my wife on 14 Pro launch day.
3) As of last night, the health on her 13 Pro is still 90% after two years of continual use.

The only difference is that she solely uses Lightning for charging (overnight).

Guess you don't own a Tesla. Those poor people have to do the same. 😄
We have a 3 and a Y. We charge to 80%. I know you’re joking, but I only drive about 50 miles per day (primarily shuttling the kids to school and back). And I can charge in the garage overnight (or any time really) so no need to charge to 100% or even 90%.

BTW, this feature was added to all Apple Silicons MACs with new firmware update on Ventura. You can limit battery charge to 80%. When enabled, Mac always charges to 80% and not more.

See: https://github.com/actuallymentor/battery/pull/163

Feature must be enabled manually by editing specific SMC key. There is no GUI in Settings app in Ventura. AlDente doesn't yet support this feature.

There is absolutely ZERO technical reason that all phones that support "Optimized Charging" can't support this.

Optimized charging literally has the phone hold at 80% until charging the final 20% just before it expects to be used.

It has nothing to do with USB-C.
Does Optimized Charging work if the phone is off? (No).

It sounds like this new feature on iPhone 15 phones might work with the phone off. In that case, it's not just software.

What I want is a mode where the phone is not charging while plugged in. Would be extremely useful for CarPlay not killing my battery. IIRC some new Samsung phones support this.

What do you mean AlDente doesn't support this feature? I have my M1 Max MacBook Pro set to never charge above 70%, in my case.

It is about time! If Apple thinks it is important enough to put on my Ultra, it should be on my $1600+ iPhone 15! If you do not want to use it, don’t.

Not exactly sure why all the hand wringing over this. The laptops have been doing this on their own for years.

I leave my MBP plugged in on my desk all the time. Most of the time it stays at 80%. I can click on the battery icon and select 'charge to 100% now'.

They've been managing all this successfully for a long time.

This is a non issue.

Hopefully they post a support article soon explaining why or why not to use this setting.

That's exactly where this setting is for. While using carplay don't overcharge your phone.

Setting the max SoC would be a great feature for sure. Also for laptops and iPads, most days I don't need that much battery... maybe something like 30-40% on most days so it would be fine at 80% or even 70%. Everyone will have a choice, heavy users can use 100% and those worried about the health or lighter users can be more relaxed.
I no longer use a laptop, but when I did I had an app actually preventing the battery from going above 60% because I always left it in the same place plugged in. supposedly, cycling a battery also reduces its life.

Nice, hope this comes to macOS as well, where the OS will sometimes notice that you're constantly plugged in and stay at 80%, but it's really inconsistent. Just let me configure it!
i100% this... I don't understand the "intelligence" behind when it does and doesn't restrict the charge. It's clear that it is software, so why not just provide a frkkn slide switch.... It can't be that hard.

Is this optional? There are times I need to go to 100 cause I'm going to be away from charger but using phone a lot?

This feature is a confirmation that 'Optimized Battery Charging' does not work reliably. hahaha

I would love this option when plugin in. A small popup where a default target % is set and you can easily choose another.
What also would be great is being able to choose the charge speed. For example: when working at home charge at 2W to 70%. When somewhere else charge at 15W to 85%. Or whatever I choose at that moment.

Extreme states of charge like 100% and 0% negatively affect battery health because the materials expand and contract.
Is this speculation or is there any actual data behind this? I ask because my 11 Pro is down to just 94% and, aside from turning Optimized Battery Charging on, I don't do anything else to "preserve" battery life. It gets wirelessly charged to 100% every night.

Posts claiming usage of iphone for a year and still at 100% is asinine. This is chemistry not magic. If you use your battery, capacity will go down. If you charge to 100% it will degrade faster. These are facts

One is hardware, one is software. The battery health is calibrated and uses a specific value. Battery value is in a range when manufactured. Therefore your device can say 100% even if the actual value from the time of manufacture has gone down. For charging, if the screen says 100% is that actual or reported? Does the software limit it at 100% or let it charge to capacity?

To see a battery value drop precipitously over a short period generally means either a battery fault or the reporting software has an issue.
