This is like how car manufacturers replaced actual tactile buttons with touch sensitive controls which make them difficult to use while driving. I hope they keep the buttons.
This. I have a 2022 VW Tiguan and the climate controls are all smooth and you have to look at them to change them - it just feels like an unnecessary distraction.

What about the silence switch above the volume buttons? Will this also be taptic.
Apple could get rid of that switch today, and I wouldn't miss it. I've started using Focus with geofencing instead. It's too easy to forget to slide the silence switch up again.

I really hope they don't get rid of the buttons, having tactile volume buttons is critical imo. When listening to headphones, being able to just reach in your pocket and find and press the volume buttons is so easy. I would say it would be great if they could get rid of the charging port, but too many cars with CarPlay rely on that port so its going to be around for years unless Apple comes out with their own wireless adapter of sorts..

It always astounds me the amount of people that come to MacRumours to shoot down rumours. It's not MacPeerReviewedFacts, you do know that right?
I'm not complaining about rumors. I complain about the writers spouting this off like they know anything as a fact. We don't KNOW anything, and we won't until Apple announces the phone. Say, "These are the latest rumors" or something like that. Don't pretend to know something when we all know damn well you don't.

I miss the classic 3D Touch. Apple needs to consider bringing back the 3D Touch on the iPhone 15 line up. It had a premium feel to it.

You and me both. I loved that feature and was like, "What?" "Why?" when they discontinued it.

How is this going to work with cases? With gloves in the winter?

It won't with either.
But this is also the part where your valid questions mean exactly jack squat for Cook et al. Like someone else here said, when Ive left, he didn't take his idiotic design ideas with him.
This is more infuriating as I do not want to have to migrate to the even more idiotic android platform.

iPhone 17 returns to "physical button" design rumors: Everything we know

Semi frequent poster on MacRumors "IIGS" User reports that the iPhone 17 will return to the "classic" physical button design incorporated into previous iPhone models.

IIGS User is quoted as saying "Hey, take it with a grain of salt, but I traveled through time and one of the things I noticed in the future was that after Apple changed the fundamental design of the iPhone, they eventually went back to something resembling the previous design. Usually for either pointless nostalgia to drive sales of current products. Sometimes after realizing the changes they made were not well received by users and were having a negative impact on sales.

Or was it a trip to the past? IDK.

Oh, and I've been to 2025. THE NOTCH IS STILL HERE!!!!!!

Why did they take away that feature? Supply line issues? Not enough sales? Even though I'm not into iPhones, I was still kinda hoping it would become more popular nonetheless. It would've been a long stretch, but perhaps make its way into the iPad line where I would perhaps get in on that there (but even then, it'd be the basic line. Not Air nor Pro)

I still have an iphone 7 and works very well, except for (surprise) the only haptic button that has the "feedback" broken. I hope theyll not go that "buttonless way"

Yup. This has always been my "problem" with this site, is that many members here seem to forget it's "MacRumors". And the "What We Know" as in the title of several articles...I digress...

Hard pass. I have enough trouble with butt dialing or hitting play on my audio books in my pocket, now I'm going to change the volume too? Not to mention not having a way to restart the phone, when, not if, it crashes.

I think it was because Apple could not implement it on the iPads. They wanted to have similar features across the board and within the ecosystem. Logical yes but I don't think it was a good decision.

It was a step backward. I wish Apple had at least left it alone exclusively for the iPhone Pro Models. More info is below.

Not likely :( First and foremost, a mandate (forgot which gov't agency) in May 2018 stated that all vehicles created then and after that point must have a backup camera. This means the console MUST have a display, so that'll eat up a fair amount of space alone. Another is with all the fancy "smart" and general computing stuff we have on our vehicles, these touch screens are something manufacturers love b/c it keeps the interface from getting too cluttered.

Myself, I was VERY tempted to get a car that was made from few years ago just so that I could have a CD player*, and more physical controls for climate/heat/air conditioning controls. However, I'd be getting only a few thousand $'s off, on a vehicle that had 10K miles on it. Nah.. I decided to just pay a little more to get this year's model.

Worth pointing out that I know someone with an Audi where the display pops up from above the dashboard (that flat area where you can place objects on), and NOT the console/dashboard area. It's too long to reach out and touch, so you interact with it via a clickable knob you turn (like the crown input piece on an Apple Watch), they're not all (technically) touch screens!

* My current car does not have a CD player anymore. Yes, "we'll live", but it's no different than not having a headphone jack, no more mag safe, etc. These are all features that fans of them used a lot, so losing them is still felt :(

I’ve read the title as “bottomless design” at first. I admit it would be far more intriguing 🤨

This is a fix to a problem that didn't exist with the buttons. No one is complaining about physical buttons, I prefer the buttons where I can reach them on my pocket without ever looking. Now it would be much harder along with no longer have the ability to restart your phone from a software freeze. How is that going to work? Wait 24 hours until the battery dies? Or stop by the Genuis bar to reboot your phone now? (One step forward 2 step backwards)
