Hopefully the haptic engines associated with these buttons will be strong enough to feel the vibration as most people operate these buttons with their thumbs which is less sensitive than the forefinger or index finger

Mute button is not something I’ll ever see as an advantage over the switch, which quickly tells me if the phone is muted or not upon touching it or looking at it. Change for the sake of change.

100% agree! I appreciate that I can look at the switch and know which mode it's in. No reason why the switch can't be similar to the Crown on the watch where there's no physical mechanism that allows water in. It can use magnets to detect the position.

The photo looks odd to me. Either the camera bump is now on the opposite edge of the back of the phone, or the photo is of the phone edge where the current "on" switch and SIM slot are located, or the image has been reversed or something.

It's human nature to not want change, or to want change for change's sake. The tech world is addicted to "the next greatest thing", so Apple's incremental strategy is incompatible with that, and out come the complaints.

But then we have changes like that rumoured Mute button that is actually a step backwards in usability. Will that button be accidentally pressed when in my pocket? Happens all the time with other buttons and the screen. The switch has never failed me, though.

It's not a photo. It's a rendering, and you're right. It's opposite reality.

Perhaps everyone has it wrong, they won’t use haptics which will add complexity and take up space, but they will use electric shock, one shock for muted, two for unmuted.

Dynamic continent, removed both SIM card trays, and now no mute button. Way to kill the usability of the iPhone Apple…
I travel a lot in Latinmaeroca and phisical SIM card tray, at least 1, is mandatory. Very few countries /carriers support eSIM and AFAIK NONE support it for prepay in Latinamerica. What choices do I have???. Buy a super expensive data roaming or buy another (Android) phone for travels and my iPhone for home?. Really not smart move for customer Apple, really poor use case thinking.
Buy an iPhone 12 and use it as your travel phone or get cheap Android. Personally, if I am traveling to exotic places, I would get burner phone. Just because I would not want to risk the chance of losing my primary phone or have it hacked.

Definitely. And I prefer separate volume up/down buttons over a single button. Not sure how well it will work with cases.

If these changes being made to improve its water resistance, it makes sense. Otherwise, don’t change something that has been working great. I like the design of my iPhone 11 Pro and similar.

Maybe that long button is for touch? I can't imagine they would make it that big if it wasn't touch sensitive. A volume rocker could be made smaller.

But what kind of monster doesn't keep their phone on mute constantly? Nobody wants to hear your phone ring. Every year when I get a new iPhone I put it on mute and I don't touch it unless changing cases accidentally flips the switch. Especially if you have an Apple Watch there is no reason to change it.

Who even uses their phone enough to justify it in 2023 unless you're running your business through it? Every phone call I get it from some unknown spam number and I block them. Even my doctor just securely messages me through their system and I can view results in Apple Health. Even electricians, plumbers, etc just text me. The only real person who calls me a few times per month is my wife or my grandparents and even my grandparents text me most of the time using their iPad.

They ought to move that action button to somewhere lower then
Where the SIM tray is? Or the battery?
Nope. Sometimes discretion is needed.
In some situations it is not polite or perhaps allowed to take your phone out of your pocket and look at it.
Lots of secret agents lurking around here... I can't think of any situations where, as a grown adult, removal of my phone from pocket isn't permitted, unless the phone itself isn't permitted to begin with.

The biggest mechanical fault of the iPhone has been there from the beginning. It’s the mute switch.. which has a habit of turning on and off, seemingly without you, pressing it. Maybe this electronic switch will solve that problem.

You may not have to use the case if it's made out of Titanium, hmm!
Its not the edge of the phone I worry about @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗 I want a case with raised edge so that if my phone falls in lands with the case edge on ground not the increased glass screen hitting first. Seldom happens with me but occasionally so I want a case for my expensive phone. I always get clear cases so I can see but what ever is comparable with this if the true design will have to be raised above the glass edge that lies above the much reduced bezel

Personally I would not have any issue if they removed the damn mute switch. I've lost count of how many times I've accidentally switched it on. I would like to see the switch removed completely and a mute option added to the Control Panel.

Surely a mute button will make it even easier to accidentally press it and mute.

Pretty sure Apple will market both as “features” with extra functionality and Focus, just like they did with Dynamic Island

As a long time Windows fan my only real Apple connection is in the mobile space it’s always entertaining seeing the latest rage. It’s technology both sides always have ups and downs good ideas and bad.

The Windows 8 thing was a great running joke in my circles for a long time. Windows RT. Apple’s engineering genius making a mouse that charges upside down and a revolutionary keyboard that they tried to peddle for years before giving up because it was a total failure.

Wait and see what happens might be a home run might be the next horrible thing but it’s hilarious arguing something that literally only “exists” as a rumor.

Only thing I could say right now is if it is real and does suck I hope they don’t keep it for years of complaining saying it’s the future only to bring back the switch in 2025 as a feature :).
