how many people actually keep their iphone NOT on mute? It goes on mute for me the day I get it and doesn’t go off of mute.

I could be an outlier but a ringing phone or a text sound is among the most annoying things that people do in public.

By that weird logic, then why not just remove the button?

Not sure how I feel about this. I like feeling the two separate volume buttons in my pocket.

Also... solid state? So I wonder how well they will work in a case?

🤔
I very often adjust the volume with the phone in my pocket over the cloth. I can do this by feeling the separate buttons and not actually touch the phone. What does this design offer as an advantage that doesn't take this possibility away?

Mute button is not something I’ll ever see as an advantage over the switch, which quickly tells me if the phone is muted or not upon touching it or looking at it. Change for the sake of change.
Literally couldn’t disagree more. I hate the mute switch and always have. I want to automate that damn physical switch for when I’m working or not. At work, vibrate please. At home, ring your a$$ off. Years ago I had this automated on an Android phone and it was great. I miss that. Maybe now we can do that since there isn’t a dumb physical toggle.

Cool design. But i wonder how well this touch sensitive button will work thru a case? I am sure Apple has tested this already, so i assume it will work well. I’m just curious.

Me. I use an old Nokia ringtone on full volume, have keypad sounds turned up as loud as they will go, and love playing music through the speaker, especially on public transport.

I WhatsApp all my contacts list in the cinema right before the film starts, and wait for their replies. I have the screen brightness on full, too. Love the flashes!

... and everyone clapped.

Wouldn't a mute button be easier to accidentally press in your pocket? Unless it requires skin contact like the iPhone 7 home button.
To be fair, mine gets switched to mute in my pocket all of the time now anyway. Maybe if it’s haptic, it will pulse once for off and twice for on or something.

Apple could allow automation without changing anything about the switch, as they already allow to mute/unmute by software using AssistiveTouch (when the physical switch is unmuted).

As previously rumored, the next-generation iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a unified volume button and a mute button, according to leaked CAD images shared in a video on the Chinese version of TikTok and posted to Twitter by ShrimpApplePro.

Instead of separate buttons for volume up and volume down, the iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to have a single elongated button for adjusting the volume up or down. Meanwhile, the mute switch that has been present since the original iPhone in 2007 is expected to become a mute button that can be pressed to turn the iPhone's ringer on or off.

Both the volume and mute buttons are rumored to have a solid-state design. Instead of physically moving, the buttons would provide haptic feedback from two additional Taptic Engines inside the iPhone to simulate the feeling of movement, similar to the Home button on the latest iPhone SE or the Force Touch trackpad on modern MacBooks.

The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are still expected to have two physical volume buttons and a mute switch, as other CAD images in the video show. Apple should announce the entire iPhone 15 series in September as usual.

In related news, tech reviewer Sonny Dickson has provided an additional look at alleged front glass panels for the iPhone 15 series. Like the original leak, the images show that the Pro models will have thinner bezels around the display, and that the Dynamic Island will be expanded to the standard iPhone 15 models.

The render appears to show a sim tray. Would be nice if it returned on the Pro models.

Pretty sure Apple will market both as “features” with extra functionality and Focus, just like they did with Dynamic Island
Yup. They will market it as part of DND and Focus, and how those all complicated things are "better" than simply flipping a switch. Typical silicon valley mindset. I have yet seen anyone on iPhones using those Focus things. Flipping a switch as needed is much simpler and more intuitive.

Completely agree. My guess is that they'll add some sort of indicator, like an always-on mini OLED-display to the top of the button that turns that safety orange color when mute.
I.e., a less elegant way than before.

Agreed. Also, a raised button is more likely to be pressed accidentally. Twice now, I have somehow accidentally silenced my iPhone 14 and it has a well-recessed switch when in the silicone case.

I can tell if my phone is muted or not, and change it, if it's in my pocket. I don't want this button. I like the switch.

Also I hope the volume buttons aren't capacitive as I can currently change volume through my pocket or with gloves on.
How simple. How easy to forget that this is a thing, since we’ve all taken it for granted. :O

Capacitive buttons will be an annoying backwards step. It’s obnoxious on appliances and will be doubly obnoxious on the phone.

Well… maybe it’s the anti-anxiety meds, but I’m even more happy to have gotten the 14 pro now.

Though, to be fair, the 15 normal will be an amazing phone with (hopefully) the wide camera of the 14pro with the 48 mp “superpix” that allows the 2x zoom

In another "leak" a.k.a rumour Trump will serve many years in jail.

I love these "leaks". A few years ago there were several "leaks" running each year that Fingerprint/Touch ID will return to the iPhone.
