Nice cut and paste post, but what a terrible take. iPhone is desperately in need of ring/silent being available to the software, and this is how you get there.
Ring / silent could be available in software even with the current mute switch. It would be simple. I have my phone set to always ring if my daughter calls. It will ring even when do not disturb is on in focus and when the switch is in the mute position.

I enjoy how dismissive most replies are here, over something that isn't mature. I don't mean speculation about rumors, but the assumption that such a button couldn't be mapped to anything else, and is strictly for mute. As a user who always has my iPhone in mute, I would welcome an 'action button' instead of a mute switch, similar to my AW Ultra. iPads of old with the ringer switch could be mapped to rotation lock.

On the subject of knowing the status of mute in your pocket... your hand's already in your pocket, you can't pull the phone out? Does it really add a level of complexity to warrant a scoff? Do you find yourself devoting hours to toggling your mute? The switch already has haptic feedback when mute is active, which could be implemented to a button press just as easily (and obviously will be present if it is solid-state as rumored). Press the button in your pocket until you feel 'on' haptics. Mute is on. Just as easy to determine in your pocket.
In some situations it is not polite or perhaps allowed to take your phone out of your pocket and look at it.

What a ridiculous assumption. You clearly missed the entire point of my post. The notch didn't didn't take anything away and also gave us FaceID.
All I can say is that I look forward to hearing about the phone you buy instead of the 15 (and the 16)

The way they included focus modes now in lock screens as well, this will be a FOCUS BUTTON. You will be able to switch through focus modes and therefore different Lock Screen/Home Screen settings.

Would be nice if you could scroll on the new unified button! My finger gets in the way too often when reading on Safari, also the screen will stay clean longer.

Well this looks interesting. 🤔

If they are going to get rid of the switch for the mute button, just get rid of it all together and just have the long press on the "down" side of the volume button be the only way to mute. Better yet, why even have a raised single volume button, just make it all flat with the haptic touch. If they are going to start ripping the bandaid off, just rip it all off!

Removing/replacing the mute switch reminds me to removing Magsafe from MacBooks.
A switch has a clear and proven benefit over any kind of button or even just a software solution for this particular purpose. May not be a crucial feature for each and every user but for many there definitely is a benefit and it's the best UX solution to the common problem of muting a phone.
In a few years when they run out of ideas and return to market research about what their users want they can gloriously re-introduce it.

Mute button is not something I’ll ever see as an advantage over the switch, which quickly tells me if the phone is muted or not upon touching it or looking at it. Change for the sake of change.
My mute button will be switched every day from the original Apple leather case of my iPhone 13 Pro Max and I hate that.
This design will be a relief for me…

Not solved. You have to grab the phone out of your pocket and visually check the screen to be sure. Not great in certain situations. With current solution you just slide over with your finger and you know its state by feel. No need to look at it.

With the phone still in my pocket I often find myself flipping the switch twice to feel it vibrate confirming the mute. That could be the same with a button.

I agree with this. But it could allow the mute button to act as a shutter button when the camera is open, with dual sensitivity for focus and shutter. And that would be pretty sweet. But they could also do that with the volume button.

Completely wrong take. This is the one thing that can't be a software control or part of Focus because of it being a stupid switch. Thank goodness they are finally changing it.

You're also just assuming they won't add a visual indicator, one that is even easier to see than today. Which is a bad assumption.
Easier to see when it’s in my pocket? Or for a blind person. i work with a few blind people and it a a big reason they stick with iPhones, having a physical thing they can feel, and know if it’s silenced or not.
