As widely rumored, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will exclusively feature an upgraded Telephoto lens with periscope technology, according to Twitter account @URedditor. In a tweet today, the leaker said they finally independently confirmed this information.

Last month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterated that the periscope lens will enable up to 5x-6x optical zoom when shooting photos with the rear camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, compared to up to 3x on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. When taking a photo, optical zoom does not have any blurriness when zooming in, like digital zoom does.

With a periscope lens, light absorbed by the image sensor is bent or "folded," allowing for a greater distance between the camera elements within the compact design of a smartphone. This technology allows for increased optical zoom and is already used by some Android brands like Samsung, Google, and Huawei, with phones like the Pixel 7 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra offering between 5x and 10x optical zoom.

Apple will launch the iPhone 15 Pro Max in September. Other upcoming models, including the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro, are not expected to feature a periscope lens. For more details, read our periscope lens guide.

@URedditor was the first source to share alleged real-world images of the iPhone 15 Pro, but they do not have a long-term track record with Apple rumors.

In my mind I always wanted a better telephoto lens, although I only use it once or twice a year 🤣 (Like most users. I suspect)
Would probably upgrade my 13 pro, for the better periscope lens, but I'm not going for the Max Pro, the same reason I got a AW s8 ss, instead of the Ultra, it's just too big 😏

but is it really optical zoom? iPhone 14 offers 2 fixed lenses, 1x and 3x and anything in-between is digital.
I want optical zoom!

Optical zoom levels on the 14 Pro Max are disappointing, especially as compared with 10x optical zoom on Samsungs. It’s one of the few complaints I have about the 14 Pro Max optically system, along with the lower-quality 3x zoom lens.

With that being said, the 2x zoom mode is a feat of computational photography!! Good job Craig F., Johny S, et al.!

I would rather 2x zoom with a larger sensor. A larger sensor will give you more (cropped) zoom with the same pixels as it is currently. But will give you better light capturing ability for night and fast shutter.

Yes, if the rumor is true it will be 5x to 6x optical zoom. The 14 Pro Max already does 15x zoom (3x optical + 5x digital + AI upscaling).
There is a difference between a telephoto lens and a zoom lens. Zoom implies a focal length that can vary, whereas we currently only get fixed telephoto lenses today in iPhones. Zooming to anything in-between exactly 0.5x, 1x, 2x or 3x is digitally done even if you don't go beyond 3x. (I believe 2x is a crop of the 48MP sensor)

The iPhone has three prime lenses of different focal lengths. It does not have a mechanical zoom. I think that's what they were getting at.

How good do these cameras need to be? My iPhone 13 Pro Max already takes INCREDIBLE pictures; I wish Apple would focus on battery life, screen refresh and audio quality…

If it makes the giant camera bump go away, great! Hell, I’d take an iPhone mini with a 2MP camera.. I just want it to fit in my hand and shorts.

I’m concerned how much shake and how jittery it would be while holding a phone and zoomed in that much… i hope they will smooth it out a lot somehow…
