Samsung has a 200x zoom. Moon jokes aside, the technology is very impressive and I hope to see it implemented in upcoming iPhone camera technology.
i've seen the Samsung zoomed in pics, it wasn't too impressive in terms of quality i must say.
really hope Apple will have a few tricks up their sleeve.

I am still wondering who is doing all this Optical Zooming that we ABSOLUTELY must have it....
Reading through this thread, I was wondering the exact same thing, I hardly ever use the zoom facility. It seems that nowadays, the only thing that gets upgraded/altered on a flagship phone is the camera. I use my phone for many things before the camera, it looks like all phone manufacturers have run out of ideas.

i don't know about you but bigger optical zoom is my most wanted feature in a camera phone.
i agree these days not too many new revolutionary ideas but the only reason i didn't switch to a periscope phone like Samsung is only Apple IOS and the fact that i still have a good enough X that never had one problem.

Is this in addition to the 3x lens, or replacing it?

It would be too bad to lose the 3x focal length for portrait mode, some people already think it's worse than the older 2x

Apparently it's hobbyists and tech junkie nerds who are looking at ever increasingly tiny differences between the smart phones other than "iOS is better optimized" or "Android has more RAM, but so did Intel."

Possible it will be a viable zoom going from 3-6 x

Typical Apple reserving a feature like this for the most expensive model. This feature should be on the Pro too and this feels like a justification to further increase the price of their biggest device.

I'm not upgrading this year anyway, my 13 Pro Max is still plenty good enough and has no limitations in everyday tasks.

why do you think so? almost no phone has a variable zoom.
Because it's the next step in zoom
Photography. They can’t just go from 3x to 6x and remove 3x. Cropping isn’t a good solution at all and apple aren’t adding a 4th lens either.

If apple have waited so long for a pericope zoom lens I would hope this is why they took their time to get this tech baked in.

It’s no surprise as space is an issue. The camera lens already looks huge on the 14 pro due to lack of space. It’s why you won’t find a pericope lens on any smaller mode device it’s always the biggest phone models.

So in effect it’s a feature most iPhone users will never use yet it’ll be touted as the next ‘must have’. This is what frustrates me about how disorganised the iPhone range is now. Too many models with too many pro’s and con’s for each one. I wish we could go back to having two models sub £1k and give a larger audience the chance to use Pro features.

It’s a feature though most PM users will probably use.

Like any optical zoom it depends on the individual. I use it on mine but it’s rare as taking pictures of things that are far away is not an everyday need for me. If the person doesn’t have the feature, they likely won’t care either way.
True. But my point is why buy the PM then. One could buy the plus. Unless you’re a money is no object type of person, why buy the PM then; presumably for the features.

A certain proportion of iPhone users do buy the Pro Max though? Some also buy the Plus if they are not bothered about the features and £250 price increase. Not entirely sure what your point is if I am totally honest.

I guess we’re speculating. Your comment “So in effect it’s a feature most iPhone users will never use yet it’ll be touted as the next ‘must have’.”sparked this.

The comment was true given the iPhone base of 2 billion. I was trying to say (maybe obtusely) the PM base of iPhone users probably will find the camera improvements useful.

Based on the rumours so far the 15 Pro Max will have a periscope lens and a USB-C port. At this point if that turns out to be true, I can’t imagine why anybody would buy it unless the lens was of interest. The port is not exactly exciting, just a necessary design evolution. So what I am trying to say is, Pro Max users will use it because they bought it over the 14 Pro Max which will be reduced by then. I’ll probably end up with one myself, just a year after it’s released and when it’s a justifiable price point.

The port to me is an annoyance. However I’m sporting an Xs max whilst my spouse has the i14PM. So when we want to take “better” photos I use her iPhone. The PM blows away my 4 year old max. I got used to the max and it serves me well and as such kept saying I was going to get a new phone but it never happened.

When you do get the i14PM the phone is awesome.

I meant I’d likely be getting the 15 Pro Max but once the 16 Pro Max is released next year. I already have a 13 Pro Max so the 14 Pro Max is not much different at this point. Lots of comparisons with the cameras suggest the quality difference is very subtle. I don’t need to upgrade this year thankfully.

i agree - it'd be the next step. but still: kinda no one has this yet. would be great if a variable zoom would be implemented.

Just today I was taking photos at nearly maximum (digital) zoom on my iP13PM. And to my amazement I noticed that the digitally zoomed image in mediocre-light conditions turned from a pixel mess to crispy-clear in one second. Seems like Apples ML routines can already produce pictures in a quality I wish I had in normal distance on earlier iPhone cameras.
And that was still 3x optical zoom. If the AI feature works as good with 6x optical (and the corresponding xx digital) zoom, that would be huge!

I have to confess that the camera improvements are one of the driving factors for me to upgrade every two years.

apple aren’t adding a 4th lens either.
Why not? They started with one lens and now we have three. Sporting 4 lenses is not unheard of in competitor devices and I think I even read a rumor regarding the addition of a 4th lens in an iPhone.

Could also explain why periscope is limited to ProMax for the time being, as that may currently be the only device able to house the 4th lens without needing to cut back (too much) in other areas.
