So whats the hold up? I mean periscope lenses have been around now almost 5 years, all competitors have already put it in their phones, the tech has more or less matured, so its not some novelty, yet Apple will only place it in their next pro model. I know theyre always late to the game, but come oooon, this shouldve already been in new iphones.

Tim Cook creates new product versions in order to maximise revenue and now we have iPhone, iPhone Pro, SE, Max, Ultra, Ultra Max SE and only god knows what else will come to the stores.
iPhone and iPhone max would be enough. Both shipping at a reasonable price. Am I going to buy an iPhone super deluxe ultimate max for 1500 bucks, just cecause it ships with a periscope camera? Hell no!
There are four models of phones being made, not six or seven. Each of the existing models offers specific characteristics to meet a variety of needs. In a difficult economic environment, segment differentiation becomes even more important.

You are not required to buy an iPhone and BTW, $1300-$1500 prices for manufacturers flagship models is not new. Very few people buy a base configuration. The higher end versions are the ones with excessive demand. IT appears Cook is making solid decisions and positioning Apple for the predicted difficult times over the next year or so.

Lastly, can't afford it? Don't buy it, but don't blame Cook for that. He is running a for profit, shareholder owned company and doing an excellent job of it.

So, is Apple expected to announce 10x zoom for the Pro Max? Really excited to have zoom, but wish it was on the smaller Pro too this year. Guess will be getting the Max for the first time. Sure that will have long delays.

Stock is down. Executive compensation is down. They’re expected to report less revenue than last year for the first time in, what, 14 years?

They kind of are struggling. They’re clearly out of ideas and have started squeezing users for ad revenue, something years ago they said they weren’t good at and had no interest in.

I don’t want it to be this way but it does seem they’re in a bit of a slump.
Quick! Everybody short Apple stock! 😱

I don't know much about photography but is the zoom lens in the current iPhone Pro/Pro-Max the limiting factor in terms of reducing or even (dare I dream?) getting rid of the camera bump entirely, i.e. is the optical zoom lens in the 14 Pro/Pro-Max the thickest of the 3 lenses and if so then by how much?

I'm trying to work out how I should temper my expectations in terms of how the adoption of a periscope lens for the 15 Pro Max/Ultra (which based on current rumours is the one I intend to buy) might reduce the thickness of the camera bump.

11 years after Steve Jobs left Apple, the company was in big trouble. Now Jobs is gone for 12-13 years and the company is again in big troubles (but without going insolvent, Apple has more than enough money). When Jobs returned to Apple, he removed 90% of Apples 350 different products, cutting that number down to just ten products.

But i would buy an iPhone with periscope camera for $900 - eventually. Smartphones are no longer that exciting.

Btw I won't buy Apples deep sea divers AR goggles for another 2 or 3K. That technology may be interesting for a small subset of people, but it won't enter the mass market anytime soon.
Don’t ever underestimate the ability of people to drop thousands of dollars as an afterthought. There are some seriously rich and/or unwise money spenders out there.

So we are now discussing rumours of an already rumoured phone camera? Is that what they call cameraception?
It is, but only when we get real photos of the 15ultra ;)

Back to the iPhone 7 era. The company is really struggling everything is a mess. Product tang, strategy, software…simplify damn it!

Remove the idiotic PLUS series and people will be upgrading to the Pro models automatically like you desire!
By what measurement is Apple struggling? How are they underperforming for current market and economic conditions?

They are not struggling and everything is not a mess. Not even close. Fanboys upset because Apple doesn't do what they want them to do or because pro users claim to experience more bugs than the rest of world combined, does not constitute being a mess

BTW, Apple can barely keep Pro models in stock even in the post XMAS shopping environment.

Quick! Everybody short Apple stock! 😱

It’s a bit late to short it now. Hopefully the AR headset will be a smash hit and the stock price will be back and then some.

Along with, you know, the end of the war in Ukraine, stable food and fuel prices, and general economic recovery.

If it doesn’t come back just from that then we’re all screwed.

Just give us three phones: Ultra (biggest), Pro (middle) and Mini (13 Mini form factor) all of them with roughly the same specs. And one budget phone (SE) with "whatever people buy the most form factor".

The same with MacBooks, why is there MacBook Pro 13"? Just have Air in both 13" and 15" and Pro in 14" and 16". Super simple. But for the love of god use decent heat pipe in Air M3, thanks!
Yep

Google and soon Samsung both have this model, 3 models is enough.

standard model with 5.4-5.8" display
Pro with 6.1-6.4" display
Ultra with 6.7-6.9" display

The plus, mini and SE have failed, just stop this stupidity and greed.

You should have a look at the store:

There is no Mini (anymore?) and there are no Max versions. So without Max and Mini versions there are at least 5 different versions - 8 if you include the Max versions (rumors already include ultra versions).

And can I afford it? Being a super deluxe ultra max senior software evangelist (in Apples words) I guess I could - but I don't want to buy marketing bs at an insane price.

There are two ways, Tims way is not the way Jobs would have done it, for sure. Timmy wants to block competition, lock in customers and bundle things. And yes, this strategy does work out right now. But the question is, will it work out in the future? No new products, the new things like Butterfly keyboard, TouchBar all failed. No more "we make the best products" or "Apple, just works" but "we make the most profit", but this doesn't guarantee long term revenue.

Steve Jobs said it the last time Apple failed, and I like to repeat it for you:

"What ruined Apple was not growth … They got very greedy … Instead of following the original trajectory of the original vision, which was to make the thing an appliance and get this out there to as many people as possible … they went for profits. They made outlandish profits for about four years. What this cost them was their future. What they should have been doing is making rational profits and going for market share.”

History repeats ...

You forgot the foldable pro, foldable pro max, and foldable SE.

The weirdest is iPad Air and iPad series, I don't understand the need for two. Mini, iPad, and pro 11 are enough. I want the iPhone to be differentiated in screen size and capacity, not functionality.

Is the stock of similar companies doing better than Apple’s?

Also, executive compensation being down isn’t inherently a bad thing. Maybe Cook wants to keep his compensation lower.

It’s time for a new design. Flip phone or something new and different. How many camera upgrades do we need ? Innovate Apple. Come on!!
