Ok, I searched for this and it seems the only phones with real optical zoom are the Sony Xperia 1 IV from last year and the brand new V. They both have regular, ultra-wide and 3,5-5,2x zoom cameras.

If Apple could do something similar, I would probably be in.

Thanks, and rumors suggest that the 15PM will use Sony lenses (or sensor?), so will do some more research on this particular phone ...

Reactions: the future
That’s such a naive statement. Apple is limiting this feature to the pro Max just because it is greedy and wants to segment the market pushing people to more expensive models. Nothing to do with technical reasons.
I don't see why that is a problem. There are so many other instances where features are limited to top models. I'm sure there are plenty of options you can get on a 7er that aren't available on a 3?

This is the photo of the iPhone 14 Pro (and 13 Pro) with the phone oriented horizontally. Look at the antenna break in the photo above. What a weird way to present the photo, without providing full context. People automatically think this is a phone that is oriented vertically. It is not.

LOL. Meh. Oh well :)

I think iterations can bring refinement and finesse and make an innovative product become more practical and usable and beautiful. I don't want a GoFundMe-like prototype for each revision that Apple comes out, for example. 🤣
😆😁

Yah, just ignore iteration-haters. Every operating system in existence is because of iterations. They don't reinvent the operating system with every release, but people want a completely redesigned phone every year? Makes no sense.

#IterationsMatter.

With this camera module? Probably.

Extrapolate out to future camera improvements, because camera physics won't change. At some point, Apple and us consumers have to decide that some protrusion is just too much. Else, we'll end up with an increasingly angled, bulit-in, corner "stand" for watching things in portrait orientation. ;)

I'm joking a bit but not too much. Better cameras in the future will beg for even more depth. There is no technical breakthrough to work around the camera physics. How much thicker is acceptable for "better camera" in a phone body? I don't know. I guess we find out in some number of years.

In YOUR opinion. There are MANY posts by Apple consumers in many threads wishing for a flush camera AND there are many posts for longer battery life. Some MIGHT be interested in that even at the expense of "thicker" and "heavier." Some already roll with both by permanently putting existing iPhones in battery cases.

Correct. The image of iPhone 5 was solely used to illustrate that Apple made cameras with flush camera modules. It was not intended to break out millimeter gauges or look up technical specs for head to head comparisons of guts. Apple once made iPhones with flush camera modules. There's one.

I think if you really increase the iPhone 14 Pro Max thickness to ~12mm to achieve a flush camera (that's the same thickness as the pebble-shaped iPhone 3G) that people would mind, especially with the added weight. Plus add a case to that and you really got yourself a brick.

Look at iPad, for example iPad Air 3 vs 4, the body size is similar but the camera quality was upgraded and now we have the bump there also. Camera quality (and weight) seems to outweigh the need for a flush backside.

C'mon guys... Who actually needs a phone with a perfect camera. Get a Canon for that. Don't cry for optical zoom. IPhones always made great pics. Those zooms your'e asking 4, you are using not very often...

Yeah, after cost and durability, thickness/weight/pocketability are the complaints about folding phones. People don’t want an iPhone which is as thick as the camera bump and lenses.

For a second there I got excited because I thought we'd finally be losing the alien-eyes design that's been around since the iPhone 11 in 2019. I'm beyond tired of having my iPhone look like Geryuganshoop from One Punch Man.
Just increase the size of the ultra-wide lens and reduce the size of the others a bit and you can have Mickey Mouse instead.

New case designs again 🤨🙄
I hope those of you who are upgrading are ready to buy new cases! Yippy!!! Tim Apple is smiling his creepy weirdo smile just thinking about taking more money from all of you!
If you actually read the article you’d know that from the outside nothing is changing at all. The two lenses are just switching places. Cases will still fit fine this year unless Apple makes the phone thicker.

Optical zoom is nice (I love the 10x on my S23U) but more important is the picture quality and the software. Can I take that photo and zoom in to say 20x and maintain good clarity? Say reading a distant sign or name.

Regardless, a new case will be needed. Wait for it...

Dedicated camera's now seem to be relegated to Professionals, Semi pros, Hobbyists. For casual point and shoot. The phone is pretty much where it's at. It's good enough for the vast majority of people. But now it seems each iteration of camera upgrades from smart phones manufacturers it keeps getting closer to dedicated camera quality.

and tourists. At least here in the US.
My last trip to the Grand Canyon, it seemed like every other adult tourist had a camera and a phone.

I hate to talk in well-worn phrases, but this one is true: the best camera is the one you have with you. The iPhone is always with you. The Canon (Nikon, Fuji …) certainly isn‘t.
True. But it is still a phone, not a pro cam ;-)
