You don’t need 10x to compete thes3 days due to higher MP cropping results are pretty much neck and neck

Viv, oppo, xiaomi can all beat Samsungs 10x even with less optical range

While that may be, as I didn't think I would, but I have found myself using 10x much more than 3x on my S23U.
3x has become the forgotten stepchild.
I find myself wishing my iPhone had 10x.

The more I use high quality phones from other OEMs, the more I find the iPhone photo setup lacking.

I know you were trying to flex with that photo, but it has poor image quality at best. You should have used samsung because they artificially fake moon images.
its very difficult to take a pic of the moon with a statue coz
1) the statue is un-lit
2)u have to reduce the brightness so u can capture the internals of the moon
3) and its taken in total darkness which is very hard

best time would be to take it at sunset which gives u the extra light and i had to wait since oct since the moon didnt lineup to the boardwalk and this pic i took after trying it on 3 successive days and the clouds r unpredictable. its holy hell but most professional photogs will be impressed by my pic. but i have till oct to get the much better pic in better lighting

this was in much better lighting. empire state and the moon

That’s still really bad image quality. There are almost zero details in the building and moon. Looks like you ran a Photoshop art filter. You should use a tripod or something to hold the camera still with longer shutter speed to gather more light and reduce the amount of applied noise reduction. Another trick is to use a short self-timer to eliminate any movement caused by physically touching the camera.

A professional photographer will say it looks fine for an obvious phone photograph, but they wont be impressed by the photo quality because it has all the bad artifacts from digital zooming and heavy noise reduction that you get from using a tiny sensor with a relatively small aperture at night. Unless Apple uses a larger module with a faster max aperture, I doubt the iPhone zoom will take a better photo.

My comment has nothing too do with composition or framing which are nice.

i should have known samsung was faking it coz all the moon pics taken on ultra look too damn similar in total different lighting. they actually dont need to fake coz ultra 23 has better zoom then p7pro by about 10% and with the ultra 23 they started using AI to boost the zoom by about 30%

well i didnt use a tripod since i hate carrying tripods but the moon is also moving so fast every sec u have to move

Prop the phone against something and get an app that lest you use longer shutter speeds. I think it’s great that you like taking photos and strive to refine your photos, but that photo isn’t good enough quality to demonstrate superiority over the iPhone.

another thing is periscope lens r so bad at capturing in low light. huewie recently launched a periscope lens which is supposed to work in low light.

another problem is that i only have 30x zooming max i cant really focus using the screen. like ultra23 has 100x and xiomi has 120x so when u try to focus on the screen its super easy

another issue is any vibration on the boardwalk u lose focus

I know, that’s because they aren’t particularly fast with small max apertures, especially at the long end.

That Samsung super zoom has really bad quality even in good light and is only useful as a party trick. Of course Samsung got caught applying fake moon images to user photos in the app which is why they look impressive.

If you are using the 30x digital zoom, that’s why your photos look soft without detail.

There are some apps which give you manual focus assists like peaking to make far away focusing easier.

You‘re both wrong, sorry. If it was a real optical zoom, the specs would describe the zoom range (like the Sony XPeria one). Periscope on the other phones is just a way to make a longer fixed focal length work.
Nonsense, the 5x is real optical zoom, it's just fixed to 5x and it's in relation to the primary 1x.
The range offered by the Sony Xperia Mark IV and V's periscope camera isn't even that great. For example S23 Ultra's upcoming June update will introduce a new processing algorithm that will cover from 2x up until 10x or slightly above. The algorithm is so good that between 3x and 10x you are getting optical zoom quality images.

Imagine trying to take such a picture with an iphone.
Also the S23 Ulta does take some impressive 10x photos, joke all you want with the moon, iphone's aren't anywhere near.

Incorrect, the S23 Ultra has a super stabilisation mode that kicks in after 10X so it's super easy to take +30x zoom images.

It's not just a party trick and it's not like you are forced to use 100x. 30x produces impressive results already.
Also Samsung didn't apply "fake moon images to user photos", at least get the facts straight especial since Samsung has an entire technical page detailing how the Moon mode works on their phones.

Dude, the 5x is real, and optical, but not a zoom. A zoom is a lens that has a range of focal lengths that are all optical. It is, by definition, not a fixed focal length.

The range offered by the Sony Xperia Mark IV and V's periscope camera isn't even that great.

This is true, and you know why? Because it is incredibly hard to put a zoom lens into a phone. That‘s why Sony are the only ones who manged to do this yet and also why the range is quite small.

I’m sure they do have a technical page. Bet it’s super legit too.

you can claim all positive Samsung stuff you want, i played a lot with it's 30X - 100X and it's not even decent quality photos. you can't pick a decent photo between 9 other unusable ones and claim it's ok. but 10X is fine though.

Up to 30x is very useful.

40x to 100-120x is more fun party trick where you can get some information like a sign or something way ahead. I would rather have that option on my phone than not.

It is a cool item to have. The unfortunate side is the closer to 100x the more pixelation.
Supposedly Samsung has an update coming that really improves that aspect of the camera.

Unlike you I own, the phone I didn't just "play" with it(in a store most likely).
30x is really decent in good light and I don't think anybody claimed 100x produces perfect images. The idea is that with 100x I can recognize things I can't physically see with my eyes and that's really impressive.

It is a zoom(5 times optical magnification) in relation to the primary 1x camera. Smartphones have multiple cameras in case you didn't know.

The range is the nr 1 problem, Samsung can't go back below 10x.
So like the preferred excuse here: Samsung has to wait until the tech matures and they can offer at least the same max 10x cap, so it's not their fault. But anyway S23U 3x and 10x options are better.
And in the end Sony also uses a zoom camera, more accurate a periscope camera system like other manufacturers, it doesn't have a "zoom lens" on the primary camera for example.

It's not a trick at all. With 100x you can recognize stuff you can't even see with your own eyes, like with a binocular. It's a really nice feature to have.

I’m sure they do have a technical page. Bet it’s super legit too.

Of course is super legit, it's been posted years ago on a Samsung official website. Again Samsung doesn't apply "fake moon images to user photos", it uses AI to enhance the photo, the entire process is explained in detail on their site. You are confusing Samsung with Huawei.

@roeiz

While I seldom use above 30x, and use 10x a lot, 100x is usable free-hand which is fairly mind blowing on a phone. With a stand it is even better. Perfect or great quality? No. But it is very usable for the reasons mentioned.
Here is a free hand example from an earlier post that shows this: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/s23-ultra-my-newest.2381354/post-32029962
