I have been keeping tabs on this forum for awhile and have never seen any complaints about the volume buttons or the precise tuning needed to adjust the volume. I'm unsure why Apple is taking so much time developing this feature when the majority of users don't seem to care. They would have been better off devoting their energy and resources towards a different feature that customers need.

This is so stupid it hurts.

Replacing a hardware switch that does works perfectly and tells you if the function is active or not even without watching it just to reduce production costs, moreover on a "premium" product.

This "innovation" will make millions of phones ring in unappropriate situations. Great job!
From the surveys I’ve seen it looks like most people just put their phone in permanent mute mode and never turn on the ringer. As long as they have a way to turn on mute initially (perhaps via Control Center) then they don’t need the hardware switch. That frees it up to do other things like an Action button.

I use the switch button without even looking at it and I can realize if my phone is muted or not in the cinema or in bed or in a meeting. Now I will have to see a screen indicator to know if it is muted.or not. Clever...
Cars had touch sensitive controls for radio and they looked very Futuristic and nice, but they are a pain to use and require a lot of attention to use. Knobs, buttons and switches have their place, as well as touch sensitive controls. The mute switch is an example of "perfection". Don't destroy it!

I'm so tired of people repeating this same thing over and over. First, the switch is so small it's almost impossible to tell what position its in by touch alone. Second, obviously Apple has thought of this and the mode will be indicated by using haptic feedback, the SAME WAY it's done now. When you enable silent mode, it vibrates to let you know. It will do the same thing when you enable silent mode with the button.

Looks wise the 4-4s (nothing like it at the time in terms of materials, build quality and even iOS was still massively ahead of Android and Symbian at that stage) or the X-Xs (closest yet to a single smooth slab of glass, new slick ways of interacting with the interface, first appearance of inky black OLED panel). Performance & functionality wise they of course just keep getting better every year! I guess also an honourable mention to the jet black 7, that was stealth jet sleek on an otherwise very boring 3rd iteration of a design. Funnily I never owned any of these phones 😂

2014 is my winner. I love the thinner design. 2010 is my second place. 2020 would be second place for me, if the camera didn't protude.

When talking not about aesthetics but about function, the iPhone 12 Pro Max would be my favorite. From my perspective, the camera has been getting worse since.
