I really can’t see them changing the design this late when they plan these devices and their upgrades years in advance and when Apple has been notoriously good in past software button implementations (iPhone 7 home button, MacBook trackpads). But also, Apple’s software has been a mess for the past year, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised if they couldn’t get it working bug-free.

Have you tried using the Action Button on Apple Watch Ultra? Yeah, it looks nice and fancy but it defeats the purpose of getting the job done. It is too sensitive and fragile to the skin whereas the current iPhone's mute button is durable and satisfying.
I admittedly, can't afford an ultra, but an extra button would add many functions that the current layout cant or would be too complex to understand.

So another upgrade that simply entails a slightly faster phone and camera. Oh, the frame might be a new material. Another year of disappointment. Where’s the innovation? Where’s the crazy idea that no one thought of but that everyone will love? Where’s the AI replacement for Siri?

It's pretty obvious what Apple is doing.

In case you you're wondering; this is what they do so as to not shock & awe it's customers.

a. Remove and replace with an actual button. Some complaints, but still an actual button
b. Said complainers get used to button
c. Apple then switch out the physical to taptic and nobody complains

See, we made the change and nobody noticed.

People seem to be assuming the button will still be used for muting. I don’t think that will even be a default option. It is be meant to be an action button. If you want it to mute you will likely have to manually set up an Automation or accessibility option. (I guarantee a MacRumors How To article on that the day the iPhone is released)

Apple is going all in on Focus modes. If you have a hardware switch controlling your ringer it can be in conflict with your focus settings.

The iPad dropped the switch years ago in favor of a control center option. That is what I believe Apple wants you to use to set your ringer to silent.

Most people probably aren’t flipping their mute switch on and off all the time (I know I always just keep it on silent) so that space is better used as an action button that can be customized and used by apps.

Keep this great content coming, I want nothing but posts about volume buttons on Macrumors. Can we get speculation about possible changes to the iPad‘s volume buttons?

Apple, Please do not touch the existing "Mute Switch". It looks fine as is. It works flawlessly!
Agreed. Having an “action button” is just stupid. 99% of people would assign it to silent mode toggling. The other 1% will assign it to something else and then curse themselves when they go to toggle silent mode and forget they reassigned it.

We have a dock on the home screen for shortcuts to apps. We have a flashlight and camera shortcut on the lock screen. We can do widgets on the lock screen which act as shortcuts to common actions. We have a customizable control center for more shortcuts. We have widgets that provide quick access on the home screen. We have the dynamic island for more quick access and you can just ask Siri to do stuff for you. Why does anybody need a button on the side of the phone to launch some quick action?

NO!.
Don’t “fix” the mute switch!!!!. You destroyed Face ID with a slower and inefficient FaceId, then the HORRIBLE dynamic huge Greenland, and now the mute switch???!!. We can see the trend. PSEUDO innovation.
NO!. Don’t dare Apple!. Seriously!. Last warning.

It will be called “magic button”. And yes, it will be utter useless to 99% of us. So Apple is doing improvements for the 1%?.

Don't give a S about the buttons. No Periscope lens ..................... no sale!

You don’t remember when the first iPhone had the display cover replaced with glass a few months before launch? Apple has always been willing to delay or change features that don’t work out late in the design process.

I don't mind them staying with normal buttons. I'm just happy they getting rid of the useless mute switch. Let me do something else with that button and I might actually use it for once! It'd be cool if it opened the camera, wallet, or any other app.

If I want to mute my phone it can be easily done by software. Or even long press the volume down button. No need for a dedicated switch/button lmao what year is it? It's shocking the apple still has a mute switch in 2023!

Judging by what people have commented here and similar threads, I would expect most people to do what they do now, turn on Mute and then never turn it off. If that is done via a control center button instead of a switch on the side it won’t matter at all. People don’t seem to be doing much switching of the switch.

"Here we have a feature everyone is happy with. Let's screw with it for the fun of it."

Sounds like the butterfly keyboard all over again.

If this new button (blurg) does appear, it better not be next to the volume buttons, as it'll negatively impact everyone that quickly runs their finger up the side to turn volume on and off, as you inevitably activate whatever action this action button has...

Completely agree with the sarcasm!

Utterly ridiculous that the next major iPhone innovation is volume buttons. If it isn't broken, don't bother fixing it.

How about broader widget support, true multitasking/multiwindow, and real file management in iOS/iPadOS instead of wasting resources to overcomplicate volume functions that now require new "buttons" and dedicated chips. Goes to show Apple is losing its way and iPhone innovation has plateaued (for several generations).

People should not be stuck..should evolve into something beautiful
This is the way, we didnt had any issues with the haptic home button from iphone 7/8, no issues with the haptic trckpad since 12" Macbook....people curse now, and love it later...typical
