so much for being an 'earth centric' company ... thanks Tim Apple!

We're going to be in Dongle Hell forever.

Hey Apple, do a trade-in program for all lightning cables to convert them into USB-C cables.

Then you can safely recycle all those lightning cables instead of people tossing them in the trash.

It'd avoid a lot of e-waste since you "care about the environment" so much!

What's that? No, cause it'd cut into your profits?

Oh yeah, the real thing you care about.
Why should apple be on the hook for EU regulations? They shouldn’t. But I agree apple should just take the lightning cables and recycle them after you buy a usb c cable from apple. Win-win.

Having USB-C will probably become important to me a few years from now, but it’s not at the moment. Having 8GB of RAM will be more important at some point years from so there’s some degree of future-proofing there, but by the time that happens, most people will already have a 16, 17 or 18 Pro/Ultra with 8GB of RAM anyway. Probably no periscope camera for the regular-sized (6.1”) Pro/Ultra model until the 16 which for me is more important that USB-C. In other words, I’ll probably get the 14 Pro, skip the 15 Pro/Ultra and then upgrade to a 16 Pro/Ultra with the newly added periscope camera in addition to USB-C, 2nm/enhanced 3nm A18 and some other new feature (integrated TouchID, exclusive feature that works with Apple’s new VR device?).

I’m excited for the periscope lens. My prediction is the Pro will get 8GB of RAM to support 8K recording and thunderbolt support with the USB-C port.
It looks like the periscope will be exclusive to the 15 Pro Max/Ultra and become available with the regular-sized 16 Pro model in 2024.

Eventually Apple is just gonna have to make people more angry then they already are. I don't think the new 10th gen iPad is gonna get to iOS 21. 4gb Ram is gonna be a bottleneck sooner rather than later.
I don’t think people should expect that their devices will get more than 4 major firmware updates. Not every Apple device can be supported like the 6s.

so, the rumored "periscope" lens - will that offer real zoom or will it be "static" just like today's 3x?
real zoom meaning you can optically zoom from 1x - 10x vs what is offered today is digitally done
it will be optical up to 5x/6x and after that will be all digital. the zoom you mentioned is not being used by anybody as far as im aware.

Apple offers free cable/cord recycling.

-Other devices: Power cords and cables.

I've sent several boxes easily weighing 20lbs+ each in with all kinds of cords after moving houses and having to clean up an old home theater, always free. I’ve recycled tons of old routers/electronics worth less than the effort of selling them at Best Buy. Not saying they don't want profit, but large companies absolutely offer a ton of free recycling options you should take advantage of. For a single cord going into staples/bestbuy and dropping it in a bin instead of shipping would probably be a better option.

I wouldn’t fault apple for not supporting the base model products for 5 years from launch with software updates. Flagship devices should get at least 5 from launch.

Meh bring on the iPhone 16 pro max, which according to Ross Young is the first steps to a full screen phone. I also hope we will get a larger display , and a revamped design on pro models as the iPhones design is starting to feel old.

I was actually looking at the RAM for the new Pixel and Galaxy phones. They all have 8+ gb of ram. Apple's Pro models should be having at least 8 gb of ram minimum. It's time for Apple to step it up.

I think it’s already clear just looking at the current generation that next year is the one to jump on. This year screams transitional.

It's kind of ironic when you think about it. The whole point of that European law was to reduce e-waste, but lots of people will have to buy brand new chargers and accessories. I don't even mind the switch to USB-C, I welcome it. But the irony of the law is funny.

I agree, it is interesting. I’m sure Apple will provide a dongle to ease the transition so people don’t have to buy new accessories but I get you.

Also, I wonder why Apple didn’t switch to USB-C with the 14? Maybe they are saving it for a design refresh which could come with the 15.

Nothing had USB C in 2013, the first phone to have it was in 2015. It's the current port on virtually everything on the planet, there's nothing "aged" about USB C.

It is a very old fashioned and cheap port though. The sort you get on Androids of a certain age. It’s VERY 2013. After Apple is done with their superior lightning port, they will just go portless. They would never lower themselves to use such a cheap port on their most important products. Remember that people buy iPhones as they are a premium product and people are willing to pay more. I think there’s more chance of Apple going back to the 30 pin port than the usb c which is so beloved by Android

So basically, this phone is getting all the features we in all reality should have gotten this year. 🤔

I'm pretty much for certain upgrading to the 15 Pro Max when it comes out next year so I hope it also comes out in some sort of blue, a color that's sorely missed in the 14 Pro lineup.

Interesting point. One thing with Apple switching to USB-C is it's more common where lightning is proprietary but it doesn't solve the mess of cable variants (AppleInsider article) and people not knowing what speed cable they are getting / have. If that could be solved that would help greatly I feel.

I don't see Apple going back to the 30 pin port though as lightening was an upgrade form that. Also Apple said when they released the lightening port with the iPhone 5, the port will last the next 10 years. Here we are in 2022, 10 years later so it makes sense if Apple keeps their promise to switch to a faster port, USB-C next year with the iPhone 15.

I haven't forgotten about the cable issue as so many of us have lightening cables. I'm sure Apple will release an adapter to help ease the transition but I get it there could be a lot of waste as people will have to consider using the adapter or purchasing new cables.

Just wanted to share this point.
