Mmkay good, gloves are what I was worried about, it's still easiest to control the volume with the iPhone buttons in my pocket rather than try to be precise with Siri with Airpods, I do this frequently when shoveling.

Sometimes they suffer from that "Designed in California" when their products hit somewhere with a real winter, hopefully they've learned from that and test it rigorously in all environments.

I can imagine the haptic buttons being really sleek and Apple-ey like the Dynamic Island, like you touch them with light pressure and something on screen hints that you've found the volume up or down, a little peek at the volume slider bumping up, and then you press more thoroughly and get a nice haptic and visual feedback.

Though, does it sound like you have to manually adjust the pressure sensitivity for wearing gloves? Hopefully you don't have to keep putting it back and forth if it's too sensitive for without when sensitive enough for gloves etc

People can be so tiring. You don’t have to like the changes but acting willfully ignorant isn’t needed either. These buttons will have new functionality and will be more durable with time and yet we always get all these comments going on about “change for change’s sake” and “solutions in search of problems” and it’s just so bizarre to me.
Amen. The amount of complaining on this site by people who haven't even used the new feature yet boggles the mind. It's sad.

I remember when Apple first introduced MacgSafe on laptops back in the early 00's. People on this forum were up in arms – many stating things like "Brilliant Apple: put a magnet right next to electronics! Apple's engineers are so dumb." These same people didn't realize that harddrives of the time had a magnate inside of them already. And now these same people find MagSafe beloved.

His is this an upgrade?.
1st no Touch ID, after all this time.
Then Dynamic continent that blocks game scores.
Then 14pro that oversharpens photos.
Now, a button that is not a button as will be a headache to activate (keep it “pressed” for 1.5 seconds to change on/off but no way to know by touching it if it enabled or not).
Candidate to the most useless “innovation” of the year.
How about real battery innovation?, or removing the continent?, or a better keyboard/editing way?.
No wonder Apple cryed to dad government to ban innovator companies like that Chi se company that everyone is afraid.

Are you suggesting that iOS is flawless and bug free on every releases?

Nope. Not even hinting at that.

In fact, I doubt there has EVER been a flawless and totally bug free release of major OS software.

My comment was a reaction to your comment that "the software running these things are falling apart".

So again... is it really "falling apart" for you?

Note: my comment is not a defense of Apple. There are plenty of things they could be doing better. But I also software is freaking hard and only getting harder with newer technologies and interfaces.

But their software - in my experience and those that I know - is definitely not falling apart. In fact, I'd say it's at a pretty high level, some notable exceptions excluded.

Now that I think about it this is a net POSITIVE for glove users because if the buttons are multi function depending on pressure applied then you can create a secondary 'deep press' (like 3D touch or the new trackpads) for each button:

The existing system:
Volume Up = Volume Up (glove compatible)
Volume Down = Volume Down button (glove compatible)
Vibrate toggle = Useless for music playback

Play / Pause / Next Track / Previous Track = You HAVE to use the touchscreen to toggle these or poke around your AirPods stem (not glove friendly)

New paradigm:
Volume Up = Volume Up (glove friendly)
Volume Down = Volume Down button (glove friendly)
Action button = Toggle play/pause (glove friendly)
Deep press volume up = Next track (glove friendly)
Deep press volume down = Previous track (glove friendly)

Glove users that were decrying this change will actually be the biggest beneficiaries of this new system 🤯 Holy smokes!!!!!! I've been wanting a way to toggle all of the above without touching the screen or fiddling around with my AirPods stem for YEARS!!!! Also if the haptics can be configured to be stronger than the feeling of a physical button press it will be even easier to confirm a button press than vs. the old buttons
Christmas time already, eh?

🎄

Apple already tried with the iphone 7/8 solid state home button and people adjust to it from the first second...like the new trackpads from the 12" Mb towards
There’s a difference between “willingly adjusting”, and “forced to accept it because there is no other option”.

Since the iPhone X, i don't think i've had any meaningful interactions with the physical buttons.

Apple can do whatever it wants with them. Just don't pretend it's some kind of headline grabbing innovation.

I just don't care either way.

I think this is going to be fine. If it works with gloves and through cases, and it’s as reliable as physical buttons are, then everything should be fine. It’s gonna be fine, right??

Ever so sorry to boggle your mind, ol’ chap.

I think the only benefit of ditching the physical buttons is to improve resistance to water damage.

Hope it works when the battery is dead
Don’t worry I’m sure it’s going to work so well it will work in your pocket or just all on its own. Almost as helpful as the screen shots I take all the time because of the placement of the power and volume buttons. I do wonder if gloves will be an issue or if that’s considered holding it wrong.

Why? Why would you need to use buttons on a device that's dead?
If you want to turn it on, its impossible... And if you charge your phone it automatically works again...
Pretty sure it was sarcasm from a previous post that said they were working on a chip that would allow solid state buttons to work when the battery was dead. 😝

Hmm, remember when the iPod went to a nearly solid state interface? And then how quick they went back to buttons the next generation because of the problems made by it? I do.

Why you think people should have non-stop software issue to be eligible to complain?

Holy smokes people are so black and white.

Of course you can complain and expect better.

But this statement "the software running these things are falling apart" is like saying the house is burning and the walls are collapsing, which clearly isn't true... and if you make it, is it not reasonable to ask "is it really THAT bad for you?"

Do you think it has to be totally rubbish or totally perfect?

Is there nothing in between?

I’ll give it a chance but I’m not buying it day one. I’m going to wait to see if people have issues with accidentally activating the buttons in a pocket, etc.

I do understand the potential issues with this "rumor", but when you say forced, are you also implying that Apple is forcing you to buy the new phone?
