Love that camera bumper. It says I am pro photographer without being ugly and un-iPhone.
I am super ready for the 15

Hey Apple:

Many of us are professionals. We want a goddamn dedicated, physical mute toggle. We don't care what executive, engineer, team, group study, or analysis concludes otherwise. They are wrong. Whether in meetings, presentations, or even out socially, we want a single, simple physical toggle to MUTE THE DAMN PHONE.

We don't want your stupid "action" button. We don't want to navigate menus for this. We want a single-flip switch that is going to stay flipped. And we want other iPhone users to have a physical toggle, too, so we don't have to hear their stupid phones ringing and beeping and pinging about their messages/likes/tiktoks and all the rest. You got it? Hello, iPhone team? Are you listening? Good -- then print this out and please take it to Mr. Cook. I speak for many, many, many iPhone users.

Thank you and continued success.

I'm all for removing the mute button and instead move the mute feature into the Control Panel. At least in there it is not going to be accidentally activated. I've lost count of the amount of times I have accidentally switched the mute switch.

I fear that an Action Button (with it been a button) will be more easier to accidentally press, and it to then perform the feature/option that you have assigned to it.

Ideal use for me: A Shutter Button!

We already have 'raise to wake'. It would be great if you picked up your locked phone in landscape orientation, the phone would immediately open the camera app on its own, and you could quickly push the 'Action' button to take a picture.

This would be sooo much faster than having to swipe on the lock screen to open the camera app, and there's no other reason someone would pick up their phone in landscape orientation.

I believe some Sony Xperia phones have / had a dedicated shutter button. Was always jealous of that. I'd love a customized button that can just do that without unlocking or swiping first.

Or perhaps push the action button once to open the camera app, and subsequent action button pushes to take pictures.
I like the idea of pushing it to open the camera. A lot of people use their phones in bed laying on their side, don’t want the camera opening every time we do that

This is a typical transitional move from Apple,
This is what I think will happen:
iP15-> it introduces to a multipurpose button and I feel the lock/siri button will be gone
ip17 -> 1 single long button; when you touch-slide up/down acts as volume changer, when clicked will be the multipurpose button
Step 3 ip20 -> The no notch, no ports and 0 buttons iPhone. Instead of buttons, an active area reacts to the gestures above

Really? This is it? Tis and USB-C is IT?!?! Why would I part ways with my 14PM for just this? I mean, it's NOTHING. It's not innovative AT ALL. What a joke.

Oh, BS. Where do I pre order? ;)

I do that every year. I knock the changes and then I end up pre ordering and hoping my new phone comes before I go on a cruise Thanksgiving week.

Wash.
Rinse.
Repeat.
Always repeat....
I am tired of the craziness ordering and not always making the opening day and the having conflicts with my travel in october. I think it’s time to start leaving the iUP program and enjoy my 14 ProMax. Save money and maybe order a 16 or 17 ProMax on my schedule rather than this craziness. We shall see

I suggest you wait to criticize the changes until, you know, they are actually announced. Then, have at it.

Again…why don’t you wait to go on your little rant until Apple actually announces something.

If they announce and it doesn’t meet your expectations, go for it.

This is so damn childish.

Nothing much to see here, hanging onto my iPhone 12 Pro until next year when the rumoured 16 ultra is launched with a larger display and a design overhaul.

It will be just be a mute toggle on the 15’s, and then on the 16’s, it will become magical, and allow you to assign a function. Got to keep these new features dribbling out, so Macrumors can keep putting an article out once a week about buttons…lol

Apple is obsessed with cramming the maximum number of gestures in the minimum number of places. So you will get something. But Apple is also against customization so it will be up to them.

Three times for camera.

Four times for Siri.

Five times for Apple Pay.

Six times for screen shot.

Seven times for emergency call.

Eight times to restart.

Plus an infinite number of short and long presses and Morse code entries.
Physical buttons do indeed have their charm and purpose. I’d love about ten physical buttons so that I don’t have to swat my bloody phone like I’m playing a frickin game just to see my notifications or whatever random ten things you like.:p

I like the idea of a settable Action button. My iPhone is never on mute (but no one ever hears it - notifications are piped into my MFi hearing aids). I’d like to experiment with different functions, find what works best for me rather than Apple assuming I’m some sort of Luddite that wants a mute switch because the DAMN IPHONE’S ALWAYS HAD a mute switch. Reminds me of the people who passed out from The Vapours when Touch ID was eliminated.

But what REALLY needs an Action Button, is the iPad. The switch on the early ones did rotation lock by default, which was pretty nice - PLUS you could change it to some other function, as I recall.

Don't forget all of these possibilities combined with simultaneous presses of the power button on the opposing side of the phone! It's so far been limited to inadvertent screenshots. Imagine the unintentional actions that will be possible now!

Mine is almost always on mute.

That's not the reason. The reason for a physical switch is that it is more practical and a better user experience.

Touch ID was faster, more accurate, and worked in infinitely more situations that FaceID. FaceID is a crippling "feature" compared to TouchID, and users have to employ many workarounds to "use" it.

Embracing change for the sake of change is even worse than opposing it because it's new. Change is not always good or better, but must be evaluated objectively. Just because Apple does it, does not make it a good decision.

I’m happy with this change. I would love to set the button to toggle screen rotation.

My phone is permanently on mute anyway, since my watch will vibrate when someone calls
Then you don't need your phone on mute, since the Watch overrides it and you cannot get the phone to make any sounds while wearing the watch because Apple decided that's best.

👆🏻 👆🏻👆🏻Excellently said! Someone please email this post to Mr. Tim Cook, The Apple Leadership Team, and iPhone Project Management Team.

iPad needs this in order that users can play & pause audio on the go and around the home without having to unfurl their iPad from the Magic Keyboard or other folio cases/covers every few minutes as circumstances demand. A boon for heavy audiobook and podcast listeners, let alone music.

hey Apple we dont want a full screen smartphone, in car we can dial any phone number without looking at the phone because of the numeric physicals keys
10 years later....no one wants to go back to static, 1 non programmable physical button in this case
You are comparing something that you think you know with something that you know for over a decade and muscle memory is there, still

Too small and awkwardly placed for an Action Button. Keep the mute switch and add an additional button.
