Now what’s stopping the iPad Pro editing video footage on an external drive so you can take projects between that and the Mac?

Only for ProRes? Why not allow H.264 and H.265 as well? It would make the processes easier for any format.
I imagine any format could be output to external ssd with prores being an easy benchmark to denote maximum recording rates.

1) I will never do this
2) I will love having a phone that is capable of it

This is America.
Nailed it for 99.9% of iPhone 15 Pro owners.

I was just messaging with a killer videographer friend the same thing: that a phone is capable of shooting ProRes 4K at 60 fps, direct to external, is insane. Just knowing that is possible it 1/2 the deal. Joked about having that capacity as 12-yos when were were running around with VHS camera on our shoulders trying to be the next Spielberg. That no one will do this is so far beside the point. People could. Kids will. It's ridiculous. I can't stop grinning.

The iPad Pro already does that atleast on LumaFusion (editing on external ssd)

So does this external recording only supports 4k pro res? Or does it support any other normal video recording as well?

Is this only ProRes video, or can you record other things like audio to an external drive too?

Didn't you see apple marketing videos feature filmographers? Many cinematographers use iphones to film their movies thanks to apple's incredibly powerful cameras

Matter of fact oppenheimer (or barbie, I'm not too sure) was shot exclusively on iphone
That's not the point. Those cinematographers doesn't hang around here and comment. Everyone of us here just snap some vids on cats/dogs or kids

What are y'all filming with prores 4k 60fps to external drives anyway? grand ma napping in the couch on xmas eve?

Well I know many big Youtubers use iPhone Pros to film their videos. DankPods previously used an iPhone 12 Pro Max to film his videos

Finally, the iPhone 15 Pro is finally worthy of having the pro name.

No it's still just a smartphone. People are so hung up on the Pro name but consumer products, not just smartphones, have sometimes had "Pro" attached to them for decades. I once had a PRO mouse and I assure you it was very normal and a bit boring, my current "Pro" webcam sucks. Pro have always just meant "upper price/feature/upsell tier" when it came to products that were and are obviously just still... consumer products, some of them very capable though.

Can we use it with Mac target disk mode so that we can put the recordings directly on an Mac?

One thing that's become painfully obvious: the infinite monkeys theory has been debunked by modern society.

That said, I stream our kids' sports matches at 1080p from an old iPhone so parents/grandparents can watch. Shakespeare? Meh.

Does anyone know what flavor of ProRes the 15 Pro will use or what the 14 is using? Proxy/LT/422/422HQ? Probably safe to assume 4:4:4:4 will not be a thing🤣. I’m still running an older iPhone that can‘t shoot it. Might be time to give Filmic Pro another look after the upgrade.

My 5.5K GoPro gets quite warm if I shoot for any length of time and its internal parts are housed in a far larger enclosure than an iPhone Pro, if streaming to an external enclosure is to allow for long form shooting I would think heat would be a serious problem particularly with 60fps@4K
