I suppose they managed to make that connection as strong as “youtellmewhat”. I tried to connect TB/USB4 M.2 enclosure with APFS encrypted SSD in it to my iPad Pro 11 2018 recently. So what? First time I even didn’t find my disk in Files app at all. After physical reconnection it appeared there and asked the password. OK. I ran VLC player to watch a video from the SSD, and the drive was ejected in a second 🤦🏻‍♂️

Interesting. Though you had trouble with it I am glad that FileVault is at least an option.

Does that mean that the 128gb uhd60 limitations are lifted, since data isn't written on device anymore , and external drives capacities are what matter
In case anybody else is wondering this: it looks like Love-hate is correct, this is the difference in wording (left iPhone 15 Pro right iPhone 14 Pro) on the Apple website

My 5.5K GoPro gets quite warm if I shoot for any length of time and its internal parts are housed in a far larger enclosure than an iPhone Pro, if streaming to an external enclosure is to allow for long form shooting I would think heat would be a serious problem particularly with 60fps@4K
1) Isn't part of the heat coming from writing to the drive? Offloading that also would offload some heat.
2) I doubt that GoPro (I'm too lazy to look it up) has hardware anywhere near as good or efficient as the A17 Pro. We haven't seen a real breakdown of this chip yet, but I'm wondering if they called it "Pro" because they included a hardware acceleration media engine for ProRes (as on M1/M2 Pro and up). Either way, 3nm and 8GB unified memory with blazing bandwidth aren't found on any other hardware to this point.

This is amazing. These little devices have become so powerful, I wonder how much longer until we see Prores RAW recording. Now that would be an absolute gamechanger.

Finally, the iPhone 15 Pro is finally worthy of having the pro name.
Wait when did the iPhone 14 series Pro could actually do that?! When??

Now. What I REALLY want to know if the external drive is formatted in APFS and is a Time Machine backup, can it access the data directly to copy from and save to without affecting the external drives ability to be a Time Machine backup?!

Can it repair APFS drives too?!

Hmmmm! Those are the BIG questions!!

Avid GoPro user here. The chip has been the same since 2021, and GoPro has not made much effort to combat overheating, which is what they're known for now. No doubt Apple is the chip champ. They're making significant camera strides, and GoPro is very well in trouble. I hope they don't go out of business tho; I love them but they really need to step up their game.

This is the feature I was hoping for with the addition of USB-C. My wife is a content creator and this will make it so much easier to put iPhone forage straight on an external SSD and pull it into FCP.

With it poweing the SSD, will be interesting to see how much the battery life is in the process.

This is a nice feature!
It’s gonna get really nice when:

FCP settings can be imported for a specific camera ProRes settings for less after recording editing m/setup time, or iPadOS FCP or other software using a standard Apple API for ProRES recording to an M1/M2 iPad Pro and direct recording into FCP!

Editing while recording?!

Getting an iPad Pro with 2/4TB storage is a LOT more reasonable with such functionality (when it comes) … and is much more reasonable when you have an iPhone with just 128/256GB of storage ;)

^ that is a refinement of my February 2023 prediction for iPhone Pro+USB-C 4/5/TB5+FCP (macOS or iPadOS)!

I’d rather Apple bring slightly thinner bezels, Thunderbolt 4 USB-C with full data throughput for exporting ProRes & ProRAW

Killer feature would be for FCP to be able to edit ON device storage or import and export to iPhone Pro & ultra series along with carrying for photo editing softwares preferences for camera to the iPhone !!

It’ll be like having your pro SLR cameras best settings that are exported and edited into the editing software preset on the iPhone. All of your choice! Change in device at will and creativity of the content capture would explode

Curious how the performance with this weeks iPhone 15 Pro over USB-C will work with SanDisk Pro Blade drives!?

wait a sec… ProRes RAW @ 4k 60p 10bit is 1680mb/s. There was a previous article saying USB-C on iPhones only support USB 2, which is 480mb/s. How does this work?

Edit: Ah, Pro models have USB3 in the chip. That explains.

i see the Samsung t7 shield as the gold standard so I will pick that one up. The base t7 might work but there are some vendors that call our the t7 shield by name.
But the base t7 is smaller and my has my preference. Anybody can confirm this is working? Or in general, has anybody has a link to “the device meets Apple's requirements”-page?

Will it be possible to save to SSD and record with external mic at the sea time (I use RodeVideoMicro II) ?
Currently the mic is TRS to lightning. This could be TRS to usb-c but then the iPhone needs to provide enough power to both mic and SSD...

‼️Never thought of that! When I’m filming with my iPhone for YouTube purposes I ALWAYS either use my videomicro or comica wireless mic.

Maybe they should have thought of a Thunderbolt port to support both a mic and ssd with a powerful dongle or something

I ordered the iPhone 15 Pro (not the Pro Max) because I'm a short person, and the Pro Max does not fit in my pockets, etc...

I also do some videography and want to be able to play with this external recording feature. BUT I'm worried – is this capability limited to the 15 Pro Max (because it has the faster transfer speed USB-C port), or will it still work with the 15 Pro (which is limited to lightening speed)?

It seems odd to me that this would work over Lightening? I know the article doesn't specify the Pro Max, but... ?

(Thx)

Both Pros support external recording.

Again, those defending the lightning port are getting awfully quiet….”Can not innovate anymore, my ass”, this time thanks to a big nudge/kick in the behind from the EU.

Caution is needed though when moving down the path of having regulators dictate device design. Unintended consequences can be severe.

  • ProRes video recording up to 4K at 60 fps with external recording
I can only infer from this tech spec on Apple's site to mean that it's ONLY capable of 4K60 whilst using an external drive. We will know next week once people get their hands on the device, but it would be great to know if that is the case before needlessly spending more on the 1TB model for it to be locked to external recording only which would mental, but given the lack of clarification on apples part, I would imagine that is the case, which would make the 1TB even more redundant

I don't think anyone really loves the whole "regulator intervention" thing, but if the "free market" isn't actually progressing and itself is impeding innovation, it's "nice" to have a backstop.

Until Apple has a credible competitor (not holding my breath, partially b/c of Apple's stranglehold on the ecosystem and partially because Google's complacent mimicry isn't credible on its own lack of merit), unfortunately, the economics of "free market innovation" is actually being stalled by the markets rather than enhanced.

Regulators sometimes need to do this, otherwise there is no innovation (no need for it). Often this is for environmental reasons, e.g. "forcing" (" " because of updating the very visual energy labels) to make more economical appliances such as washing machines, driers, etc, because a consumer will not be paying attention to this when buying, except when it is very visual...Same here: iPhones are being bought DESPITE the very annoying lightning port. Heck, iPhones are so popular that they would even be bought if it would be charged by the blood of newborn puppies. And this was regulation for all phones, not just iPhones....
