"Best smartphone camera" sounds like "best British food" or "best beach in Greenland". Smartphone cameras got better over time, but they seriously lack behind real cameras. They apply some software "magic", but you can do the same with images from real cameras. Taking a photo with a smartphone camera is like running a marathon with Birkenstock sandals. Possible, but not recommendable.

Camaras aren't the least interesting things on a phone, but for me, they are pretty far down the list. They are definitely not a reason to upgrade.

This is dumb. A modern iphone camera is as good or better than a point and shoot for 99.9% of people. This is evident, since only about 45 point and shoots are sold per year. And if you're talking about some absurd DSLR or mirrorless monstrosity, then you're really missing the entire point.

Photography has been a huge part of my life for a couple decades and I'm super pleased with the cameras on my 15PM. Like previous models starting with the iPhone X, it's now my everyday camera and has pretty much replaced what other people refer to as so-called "real cameras."

Also, for people into making videos... check out Blackmagic's free Camera app. It's super well-done and offers a ton more control and options for making videos.

If you have to replace it every two years like I did, you’re better off getting an iPhone and just keeping it longer.

At least that’s my experience. Your mileage may vary.

Definitely not blind hate. I use all operating systems. Android and Windows are about tied for which one annoys me more. But it’s not blind nor is it hate.

Sounds kind of like blind hate if the entire basis for your opinion is a single anecdote that one can easily go onto the internet and see is not typical.

Doesn’t matter if it’s typical. I personally felt burned by three Android phones in a row. Never felt that way with four iPhones. I deal with Android nearly every day. I don’t choose to personally deal with it when I don’t have to.

My honest take: This is cool. Good for iPhone. But I stopped caring about this dude's opinion so long ago. He's a professional troll who's good at video editing.

Edit: I should clarify what I mean-- He is someone in a long list of "YouTubers" who thinks he knows things about things and is good at talking about them as if he's an expert. He has no idea what goes on at Apple or how any of this stuff is created. He's a professional armchair quarterback. The most useless kind of quarterback there is.

I don't think he ever claimed to have inside information about how things are inside of Apple did he? He's just a reviewer who reviews and gives his opinions on products after they are released. I don't think he claims to be an expert either, just gives folks a first look at newly released products and gives his opinion on it. Not sure how that makes him a troll tbh.

I like watching his content, because I find him to be one of the more balanced reviewers and presents his opinions in an organized, easy to understand fashion. His little awards show is a great way to look over the options of the year, and keep them in mind for recommending devices to friends and family, since not everyone I know is an Apple fan.

He prefaces the entire video by saying it's all his opinion, so I do find some of the ire in the comments quite funny. I know it's an Apple focused website, but Apple devices are not the greatest things ever made.

These comments about MKBHD let me know you guys only watch his YT vids and don’t listen to his pod. He routinely says negative things about both Apple & Google and is extremely objective. He’s clowned several of Apples products over the years. Also, the armchair quarterback line was funny because it’s like your armcharing the armchair guy sooo…lol

Must be clear skies wherever these folks are. With no clouds to yell at, and no Olivia Rodrigo stories on MR, yelling at YT'ers is the next best thing.

I really want to get a new iPhone but I am so underwhelmed by the upgrades since I bought my 12 that I can’t justify it. I don’t think that I need a better camera.

I would disagree. Even Apple has quoted him in one of their recent Keynotes. They actually care about his opinion.
He may not (like many) know exactly what Apple is doing any any given time. Or how the sausage is made, decisions, reasons behind why this instead of that for every detail within Apple. But, he is insightful in his critics of Apple products as well as others. He does use the stuff, and has been doing this for a while. I actually happened to go to the same high school he did (i'm much older). So i know he's not an idiot or uneducated in the slightest.

It's more than fair to disagree with his opinions on any subject he covers but, he's not a troll who's just "good" at video editing. There is an entire industry that wishes they were half as good as he and his team is at this.

Glad I chose the iPhone 15 Plus over the Pro max this time around. battery life is honestly more important to me than another round of camera improvements, which I can hardly tell apart anymore (positive thing!)
I picked up the Max as I wanted the camera. But, the battery life for my use has been great. So the Plus being better for me, wouldn't matter much. However, everyone's needs are different. Happy the Plus suits yours. :)
On the other hand, does one dudes opinion really matter this much? It is all just subjective over all. Its like those "best movies of 2023" YouTubers like SAYS WHO
It is subjective. But, he has a large following of subscribers that pay attention to what he reviews. So his opinion does matter. He does get to review products ahead of time from Apple and other companies, as his review matters to them that much. There are other reviewers out there with millions of followers too so, it's not just his word alone.
I would just use it as a guide post. So like you stated above about your purchase of the Plus over the Max. This review would have either swayed your purchase to the Plus (had you not already purchased it). Or confirmed for you that it was the right choice to make. As the camera improvements aren't enough to get you to purchase the Max. Now had the Max had the better camera AND the best battery life. Maybe that would have swayed you to the Max. Or maybe your next purchase would be a Max version of the phone so you can have both.

He isn’t the Messiah when it comes to phones it’s just his opinion which is subjective he gave the Google pixel eight best phone of the year that’s nonsense. Why do people think that what he says is the blueprint to tech?
Yes I is no expert in these areas.... just a youtuber.

Best Compact Phone:
ASUS Zenfone 10
That’s interesting, as the Zenfone 10 (146.5 x 68.1 x 9.4 mm, 172 g) is barely more compact than the regular iPhone 15 (147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm, 171 g), and less compact than the iPhone SE (138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm, 144 g), which in turn is still larger than the iPhone mini (131.5 x 64.2 x 7.65 mm, 141 g).

At what level of expertise would you consider it acceptable?

MKBHD might not be an "expert", but he does a great job of providing balanced information - both positive and negative (if you watched him regularly) - on all products he reviews. And he does a good job of doing it from a consumer's perspective, not an expert's perspective. He also regularly states his opinions are just that.

You sound like a jealous hater for no reason lol MKBHD makes non-controversial videos on YouTube and people watch them. How is he a professional troll? Genuinely curious but highly doubt you would be able to explain why.
