I like listening to a wide range of opinions. I can’t think of a single person who is the authority of having the correct opinion on something like this when it is so subjective. These reviewers tend to know more than people like us because it’s their full time job, whereas we are just consumers with preferences.
Sometimes. In this case with the camera there a pro photogs that know what they are talking about. Even pro photogs though have different opinions on the same dataset.

Apple won’t do this. Why allow family members to share devices when you can put artificial limitations in place that require you to purchase multiple devices?
I think they like to keep it simple. And I can attest that with a family. Having 1 iPad is not practical. But, it would still be a nice feature to add. For when you can only have 1 pad.

To be honest, if it weren't for MKBHD and a handful of other youtube channels, I'd probably be entirely ignorant about the majority of current Android phones. I use the OS occasionally for various reasons, but I'm not buying Android phones or tablets personally and aside from the big headline makers like Galaxy's or folds etc, I wouldn't know anything about the ocean of phones out there. Of course I follow iPhone rumors and watch the launches, but I'm simply not paying attention to what Oppo or Motorola or Xiaomi or whoever are putting out. Hell, that's the only reason I ever remember that Sony still makes phones. So it's nice to watch a 15 minute roundup video and at least get a summary.
I'm definitely in the same boat with some of those phones you mention. I never see them in real life, and I don't really look for them. Android is not my thing, and I have tried a few phones. Even a Sony (twice!). None of them impress me except for the foldable. As it's a neat thing to do. However, it still runs an OS I really can't stand. It's like learning Linux. Sure, you can figure it out. But, it's hideous. LOL 😁

You’ll never get an opinion from a photographer on what camera is better without a heavy element of bias. It’s like asking what the best phone is, in the iPhone section on Mac Rumours.

the 15 pro line has made some really good improvements for the camera this year. the HDR and highlight blown out issues were bad and they fixed them this year so glad to see that. calling it best camera isn't a bad statement as for an overall camera system it's as good as any out there.

pixel is still better for me for pure point and shoot though.

For me, on a personal device, MDM is a total no-go, profiles or not. If work wants to manage the device, then they can buy it. Other than that, everything else you listed would be a gift from the heavens.

That's why I requested a work phone. I have loads of HIPAA data on my device, so I can understand why they require it.

We have just one iPad for the family. I don't have any use for one, so I created a generic family Apple ID for it, and have streaming apps/games/etc. installed. The kids pass it around, but typically use their laptops.

I'd be okay with that, if it was much much more in-depth, like letting an MDM certificate only apply to one focus mode, different DNS setting for each mode, VPN always connected under one, etc..

I don't see that happening.
Is it possible to use Shortcuts for those things?

Cheaper, yes. Better, depends on who you’re talking to. I owned every Pixel phone from the 4 to the 7. Android seemed to be going downhill year after year so I got rid of my pixel 7 and moved over to iPhone, and couldn’t be happier. Just because a device is better for you doesn’t mean it’s better for everyone.
I absolutely agree that it is horses for courses. My main point is that Androids have now caught up iPhones. I stuck with iPhones for 10 years because they were the best, and I remained unconvinced that any Androids were as good.

Funny you say Android progressively got worse, and I don't doubt it. I also think iOS has progressively gotten worse. All these giant tech companies seem to be hell bent on reducing options and choices, so that they can herd the customers into the most profitable options.

Ironically, it is iOS that has driven me from the iPhone more than anything. I am so sick of it. As a macOS user, who still absolutely loves my Apple Silicon MBP, I find iOS to be utterly frustrating. It wastes the wonderful hardware that it sits on.

Also funny that you are so happy on an iPhone now, as that is exactly how I am feeling about now being on a Pixel 8. It is such a breath of fresh air.

Anyway, all the best to you. Long live choice.

I am also thinking about pulling the trigger on a Fold device by next Fall. I am ready to try something fresh as you say. I’ll still have my iPhone 15 Plus for my iOS needs
Just curious, what are you iOS needs?

Possibly some apps that are iOS only, and don't have Android equivalents? Fair enough, I personally haven't had any problems with that, as all the common apps have Android equivalents, which quite frankly, I've found to actually be better than the ones I've had on iOS. But I live on my MBP, so anything more complex I'm doing on my laptop, and don't use my phone for.

If you're talking about the ecosystem, well, I find my Pixel phone integrates with my Mac better!!! Both phones integrate for every single purpose, but I've found that Apple sometimes does it in an annoying way.

As for AirPods only doing auto-switching between Mac and iPhone, but not with Android, I researched alternate ear buds, and was blown away to discover that even the latest AirPods Pro aren't the best ear buds in any category whatsoever.

Not a single reviewer thought AirPods where best for ANC, or sound quality, or call quality, or anything at all. They are up there, but not the best.

As far as switching, the AirPods are actually a bad joke!!! Many other earbuds do dual connect, meaning they are simultaneously connected to both my Mac and my Pixel. They don't have to switch, they're already connected. The good ones detect when you press play on one device, automatically pause the play on the other device, and the audio seamlessly switches. I couldn't believe it. What is this ridiculous game Apple is playing by making a substandard switching tech simply in order to make their AirPods work poorly with Android phones!!!!

FYI, I ended up choosing the Dennon Perl Pro earbuds, as they had the most epic audio quality by a good margin, so wanted to try it. They don't have great ANC, but I've never been that into it, as it won't do the most useful things like block out my neighbours barking dog. They do have top quality dual connect. They will connect to my MBP as is, but, to my amazed discovery, Apply has only put poor quality Bluetooth audio codecs into all it's devices, so to make use of the much more advanced codecs in my ear buds, I bought a bluetooth dongle, the Creative BT-W5.

The other main contender I had, is the Sony WF-1000XM5, which has top quality audio quality and ANC, with all reviews I saw ranking both higher than AirPods Pro. Sony put these out annually, so I might get the updated XM6's next year when they come out, just to see how good ANC is by then.

But for now, I was super curious about the Dennon's audio quality, and wanted to try them out. I haven't given them a red hot test yet, so can't give a decent review yet.

Like I said, it depends on who you talk to. The “best phone” is the on that works best for you. Agreed.. long live choice!

A pixel 8 is not better than an iPhone. And it actually is more expensive than an iPhone SE 3 and only $70 cheaper than an iPhone 13.

That’s the issue with android. If I can’t afford (I can) to spend $600 then an entry level android should not feel like I’m using an android from 2012. You have to either spend a ton of money for
An average at best experience or cheap
Out and have a subpar one. Android is a compromise and Settling.

Any modern smartphone should have basics like tap to pay/nfc. A decent screen refresh and resolution. Samsung is about the only one who releases halfway decent entry level phones but it’s also Samsung so I don’t trust anything from them
Why would you compare this years Pixel price with the old tech SE3, and the 2 year old iPhone 13? You can still buy last year's Pixel 7a if you want a better comparison for your tricky little attempt at white washing.

The other major thing with Pixel phone prices, is they are released full price in October, but if you wait a month, they are significantly discounted for Black Friday. Also, if you upgrade the storage, those upgrades are much cheaper too.

My 256GB Pixel 8, was effectively just over half the price of a 256GB iPhone 15. And for my use case, a huge improvement.

FYI, I am not a hater, I still live and breathe macOS, and you'd have to peel my 16" M1 Pro 32GB/2TB MacBook Pro from my cold dead hands.

Maybe it's *because* macOS is my daily work/study/play device, that I find iOS so infuriating, and have found the Pixel 8 such a breath of fresh air.

And considering the price tag of my MBP, you can probably see that price wasn't my main consideration for switching phones. Price wasn't so much about the money for me, but I don't feel like Apple has grown greedy beyond belief, and I find myself to the point of not wanting to be their customer anymore. Unfortunately, no one else makes a laptop anywhere as good (IMO), so I have zero plans to switch anytime soon. However, my MBP is so powerful, I also have no need to upgrade anytime soon either. I would have actually preferred the base M1 chip if it came in a 16" laptop, and I could get 32GB of RAM with it.

Tricky little attempt at white washing?
You give me way too much credit and i dont think you actually quite understand what the term white washing means.

Generally speaking even OLD IPHONES perform better than Pixel(not counting the pros). I have heard major complaints about the pixel 7a:

1. Modem is terrible
2. Overheating
3. Connectivity issues with Mobile and wifi network
4. Battery drain

On the contrary a nearly 2 year old SE usually is always reviewed highly and I have seen very little complaints about the SE.

The reason why Pixel are discounted so fast (like most androids) is simply because they don't sell and they have to lower the price to get units moving.

The only reason to buy a Pixel is if you want a pure android experience. I would never buy a Pixel if i had to use Android simply because Pixels are even more of a compromise using Android than Samsung. At least with Samsung products, the hardware is actually fairly decent (for an android phone) and the cameras are usually spot on. Samsung is the only OEM (And a distant sony) who seem to take pride in their products that they sell similar to how Apple is with the iPhone.

I JUST sold my Galaxy S22 Ultra for $500 and i am so glad to have it gone lol.
