I know people like to make fun of iphone updates being meh lately. But come on. Until Apple comes out with a flip iPhone, there isn‘t much that can be changed about the look of a iphone anymore. New colors. Slightly improved cameras. Thinner bezels. It’s all going to be what seems like slight improvements from here on out.

They do. I don't even know why we're arguing about this.

Love the high-level, substantive discussions here at MR! 😁

Thought for a moment I was back in grade school! 🙈

I'm kidding… I was reading the thread and, when I got to the first exchanges, had no idea what the dispute was even about! ❓❓ And, wasn't going to go back to figure it out.

Fortunately, in the midst of it, was a clarifying post:

I agree with the other poster, seeing the rumored thin bezels got me excited but the actual ones were [sic] getting are barely thinner

LOL!

By the way, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary (which comes with all our Macs, iPhones, and iPads), the word ”bezel” comes from Old French, but is of “unknown origin”. Thought you might like to know...

That's ok, you're welcome to agree with him. But the bezels are thinner and match the photo in the link in the story.

I don't know any other way to argue this. The bezels are thinner and match the photo in the link that's in the story. I could write paragraphs about it, and come up with clever insults that won't get me banned, but I'm not sure what the point would be. The bezels are thinner, and they match the photo.

Yeah, right, cost of living increased 25% in 6 years… 😂😂

More or less.

$999 in November 2017 was about $1,021 in November 2018 (2.2% inflation).
$1,021 in November 2018 was about $1,042 in November 2019 (2.1% inflation).
$1,042 in November 2019 was about $1,054 in November 2020 (1.2% inflation).
$1,054 in November 2020 was about $1,126 in November 2021 (6.8% inflation).
$1,126 in November 2021 was about $1,206 in November 2022 (7.1% inflation).
$1,206 in November 2022 is about $1,244 today.

Ah. I didn’t get the 5x was the periscope. My bad. Tx for the correction

Apple did not call it a "Periscope Lens" but they used the term "tetraprism" meaning they used a periscope lens that reflects the image 4 times (tetra). I think this is either Apple trying to differentiate from the competition or not confuse people into thinking a little eyepiece is going to pop out of the iPhone like a periscope on a submarine. Periscopes on submarines use (used?) reflections in prisms to increase focal length and get greater optical zoom -- I am guessing modern submarines may have more sophisticated equipment.

Apple doesn't capitalize "tetraprism" or trademark it, so I don't think they are trying to coin an Apple-specific term, but they are just describing a periscope lens with 4 reflections without using the term "periscope". I am guessing future iPhones may give us a telephoto with a pentaprism, septaprism or octaprism as they try to increase the number of reflections to further increase the focal length.

Ideally, we would get a whole new lens with a 10x and keep the 5x as well.

While there were some interesting new features/upgrades with the iPhone, I felt like 90% of the Keynote was a miss. I'm all for companies being "green" and environmentally friendly, but you dont have to tell me you're doing it in 15 different ways. I'm watching the Keynote bc I want to hear about hardware, but I felt like they just kept going on and on with the environment stuff. Just a quick one sentence blurb - we are recycling and being green.... now move on and tell me about some hardware. Your quickly boring me Apple.....

That’s obviously your opinion. I, for instance, find the environment focus one of the most important parts of last keynote, and I hope they’ll just put more and more energies into this field.

Agreed. (I meant it to come across that way - and to be clear it's not that I don't care for the environment, just not my personal reasons for watching the keynote).

I also found an interesting critique of their mother nature trailer. It's from a guy in the UK who does a lot of commentary on various things, but also on social issues. He is pro-environment, but takes issue on a lot of the statements. It comes from Christian perspective, and regardless of ones beliefs, it's a great, IMO, honest breakdown of a "funny/not funny" attempt at dealing with an important issue. I thought it profound that the speaker (and apparently others) found holes in their narrative (which they control bc they are saying it, but just bc they said it doesnt make it true). It's only 30 minutes, but worth it if anyone cares to have a listen.

They funniest part of the commentary, if you dont watch it, is that one one hand they say they planted forests, and on the other hand they want to "permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere" which would kill the forests (and all human life)! 😅

Yeah, no... I'll pass this time!
I too noticed that "permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere" made no sense the moment I heard it during the keynote.
BTW, I think there are just too many people talking instead of doing. My god, if all the time we spent talking about things we did something useful, this world would probably know no hungry people.
That includes me, of course. And that's why I'm going to sleep right now: wrote enough for today!
