I disagree.

The old Apple, I can get today's flagship features next year or two years later for less if I cannot afford $1000. Exact same features. I may not need them if I wanted a cheaper iPhone, but they are there as added value.

Today's Apple, I can never get telephoto lens if I cannot afford $1000, no matter how long I wait since Apple never slide down the Pro iPhones into cheaper price points.

You see the difference? You get more with the old Apple since even if I don't want to pay top dollars, I can simply wait a year or two and get that fully featured flagship iPhone for less. With the new Apple, you will always be second class citizen if you cannot afford $1000 as some hardware features are locked only for that price point and up.

People who don't care about "fancy" features won't be affected as the lower priced iPhones are still there regardless.
Apple is propping up the 2nd hand market as well, which is where you will have to go for that discount you wanted on pro models.

Offering a product segment with various specs and price points has not been unusual for Apple. Look at the range of Apple computers going back to the 1980s and 90s with the various Apple II and III models, Lisa/Lisa 2, Macintosh models, etc.

The early phones were primarily focused on software, storage and connectivity but as things like camera capabilities improved and became more important (at least to some), it was more logical to offer different phone tiers to give customers more options instead of a one size fits all approach.

I think Apple has simply been doing what the smartphone industry has been doing. $999 USD for a feature rich iPhone 14 Pro for those who want it is not a bad price IMO. It's the same price as the iPhone X was five years ago which had half the starting storage and less features. For those who don't need the bells and whistles or don't want to spend that much, there are still the regular iPhone 14 and SE models. A little something for everyone.

USB-C will probably come to most of the "15s". But it would seem to me that, because of the space requirement, it's that "periscope" telephoto/zoom lens that could be restricted to the "Ultra" model.

That zoom lens, whenever it happens, will be what finally retires my 'real' camera.

While USB-C would indeed be great, WiFi6e would also be a nice addition. Actually, next month’s iPad Pro/Mac Pro event should be nothing but WiFi6e devices across the board since most “pros” are running on WiFi6e infrastructures.

You can get previous gen refurbished Pro models directly from Apple, with the same warranty as a new device, for hundreds less than the $1000 new price. Problem solved.

What could they do but make the phone thicker and more ruggedised and put an even bigger camera sensor in?
I want to see their foldable as the Ultra, because it's going to need to be ruggedized with that much glass and being foldable. I would buy that.

Refurbished iPhone inventory is inconsistent, it is not available in retail stores, and it's not even available in many markets with Apple stores, let alone ones that don't even have official Apple presence.
Example, Singapore. No refurbished iPhones are ever available there in the refurbished section, only macs and iPads.

More option? Huh? The new Apple actually took out option by restricting certain features only for the top Pro models. With the old Apple, even people had more options. If they wanted the iPhone 7+ with telephoto but couldn't afford it at launch, they could simply waited a year and buy it for less. Now, you can never get telephoto lens unless you spend $1000. How's that more option?

It’s still more options even if you don’t like the price points.

I have no doubt they will keep the Pro and Pro Max lines and introduce the Ultra above them, which will come only in a 6.7" size. Pro and Pro Max are their money makers and the Ultra branding will segment the product line further and push those who can afford it to a higher end product.
Why not 6.8”? flagship A droid phones have been available in that size for years, and even though it is a nominal increase, Apple can market it as the “biggest iPhone ever”.

That’s a fair point— perhaps the Ultra will be essentially bezel-less and have a slightly larger display. It would be a strong selling point.

If Apple want to avoid negative press, they should not offer USB-C only to the Ultra or even the Pro and Ultra models.
People are obsesses with USB C, how much data are they transferring every day ?
I never transfer data using lightning.
May be small no of people will use USB C.

i just dont see apple giving up all that money they make for MFi certification with their proprietary lighting cable, not when they nickle and dime us for everything else
Business have one goal, make as much money as possible.

All these different skus and insane prices it's getting out of hand, it already is really. Crap like this nearly killed the company once and it'll happen again if they are not careful.
Steve Jobs would have smacked all these people if he was alive.

According to Walter Isaacson in the book Steve Jobs, Steve shouted “Stop!” in the middle of a product meeting and said, “This is crazy.”
Taking a marker he drew a chart that was to form the basis of Apple’s product range for years to come. The simple insight was to help people choose a computer using only two questions — are you an everyday consumer or pro? Do you want portable or desktop?

Mostly Only YouTubers and geeks are obsessed with USB-C as they have many devices like Android phones and other gadgets. The lay person couldn't care less. Many lay people I met sees USB-C as the "Samsung charging cable."

I spoke with a friend about iphones getting USB-C , and her immediate concern is that she has to carry more cables to charge her airpods and older iphone. She decided to get the 14 while it's still lightning.

Having said all that, it's annoying that Apple is limiting iphones to USB2 though. Apple could do USB3 via lightning as they did it in the older ipad Pros, so their decision in keeping iphones on USB2 is definitely intentional to save faster transfer speed for a future iterative update.

They would be insanely stupid to make USB-C exclusive to only the most expensive models. It would definitely generate a lot of negative press for them.

Every iPhone next year should come with USB-C. from the basic iPhone 15 to the "iPhone 15 Ultra".

Mark my words I will leave the apple ecosystem with my entire family if they move to usb-c. I have so many accessories that are lightning including many old players and even cars. I don’t know why the internet is full of idiots running around wanting usb-c, like who cares - the boat sailed 10 years ago when they picked lightning and committed. Just use MagSafe if you are so butt hurt about it. I mean this move will just be for apple to generate more money selling all new usb c accessories.
