But why do we need to buy a Thunderbolt cable if the iPhone Pros do not support Thunderbolt? Was that an example since that's the only one capable of USB 3.1 that Apple sells?

I've been wanting the switch to USB-C since everything's moving towards that but this is the reason I don't like it. With USB 2.0, I could pick up any USB cable and it would work at that speeds. With 3.0, when it was new, we had to make sure it had the blue part. Here we are, what, 10 years later or so? I still can't grab a cable with a USB-C end and expect it to work at least at 3.0 speeds.
Simply because they want you to subscribe to iCloud.

I expect this to improve next year with the iPhone 16, with the integrated USB-C controller on the SoC, just like the A17 Pro.

Seems unlikely iPhone 16 will get A17 Pro, but rather A17 only. I'd expect clock and die size (feature) cuts on A17.

Could this be because A17 has only usb-3 chip and no thunderbolt controller?
Also the A16 may not have USB-C controller, so only USB-2.

This is essentially what I'm thinking. This year's non-pro 15 uses the same A16 processor/chip/SiP as last year's pro 14, so they had no ability to add faster USB speeds.

But the A17 is a new design, so they could decide to support anything they wanted. But it seems they decided that it wasn't worth it to support thunderbolt, and went with a USB-3 controller on the chip. (Interesting that they call it the "A17 Pro", possibly leaving room for a non-Pro A17 chip.)

I guess they have to leave something to upgrade the normie iPhone to next year. Doesn’t affect me as I only buy the pro, so, dumb, but meh. Don’t care.

So, do they require a special usb-c apple cable with IC chip? Or nah
If someone uses a cable capable of USB 3 speeds, from Apple or anyone, they’ll get USB 3 speeds (USB 3 cable with 10Gb/s speed required). If one does not use a cable that’s capable of the data delivery performance they’re looking for… then they won’t get the data delivery performance they’re looking for.

I’m FAIRLY certain that ANY USB-C device purchased today will only transfer data at the speed the cable supports.

UGH: was looking at the specs page for the ProMax.🙄

ik , this is what im referring to tho https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/10/apple-planning-to-limit-iphone-15-usb-c-port/

This is obscene. Apple may want to stick it to the EU but it is assaulting its own customers. The 15 and 15 Plus should have at least USB 3. If they want to differentiate between them and the Pros, then give the top models Thunderbolt speeds. But that wouldn't be like Apple, the world's most arrogant and cynical company. Not only am I going to wait on a purchase, I'm going to seriously consider leaving the ecosystem.

I'm just surprised they even bothered with a port, I expected them to be wireless only and have some secret service port in the sim card tray or something.

There is a shocking lack of photos of the new USB-C port anywhere in apples marketing for the 15 Pro on their website. Why are they so reluctant to show hole?
Well they ARE highlighting the features of the ENTIRE phone. It would be odd to refer to the camera capabilities while showing the USB-C port. Talk about the new action button while showing, NOT the action button, but the USB-C port. :)
