Apple has announced that on Monday, September 9 it will hold its annual fall event, which means we are just days away from the launch of the iPhone 16. Like the iPhone 15 series, this year's lineup is expected to stick with four models – iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max – although there are plenty of design differences and new features to take into account.

To bring you up to speed ahead of Apple's "It's Glowtime" event, we've summarized below the biggest iPhone 16 rumors we've covered so far here on MacRumors. For more details, follow the links, or dive into our dedicated roundups for both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.

1. Larger Displays
Biggest Ever iPhones
This year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting bigger display sizes, increasing to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. The new display sizes would be the largest ever for the iPhone.

2. Vertical Camera Layout
iPhone 16 & iPhone 16 Plus
Apple's iPhone 16 base models will feature a vertical camera arrangement with a pill-shaped raised surface, instead of a diagonal camera arrangement like the iPhone 15. The new camera bump features two separate camera rings for the Wide and Ultra Wide cameras. The vertical camera layout is expected to enable Spatial Video recording, which is currently limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models.

3. Battery Changes
All iPhone 16 Models
Rumors suggest the ‌iPhone 16‌ and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature larger batteries than their predecessors, although the smaller iPhone 16 Pro device could see the biggest improvement, while the ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus may have reduced capacity. The iPhone 16 is said to have a 6% increase over the iPhone 15, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max gaining a 5% increase, and the iPhone 16 Pro seeing a 9% increase. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Plus is rumored to have a 9% reduction in capacity. On the other hand, Apple could also potentially use stacked battery technology to increase energy density and prolong lifespan across the lineup.

4. Capture Button
New Camera Capabilities
All iPhone 16 models will have a new "Capture Button" dedicated to triggering image or video capture. The button will add features like the ability to zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button, focus on a subject with a light press, and activate a recording with a more forceful press. The Capture Button will be located on the bottom right side of the ‌iPhone 16, and will take the place of the mmWave antenna on U.S. ‌iPhone‌ models, with the antenna relocating to the left side of the device below the volume and Action buttons.

5. Ultra Wide Lens Upgrade
iPhone 16 Pro & iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to feature an upgraded 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera lens, which should allow it to capture more light, resulting in improved photos when shooting in 0.5× mode, especially in low-light environments. This also means that iPhone 16 Pro models should be able to shoot 48-megapixel ProRAW photos in Ultra Wide mode. These photos retain more detail in the image file for more editing flexibility, and can be printed at large sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also rumored to boast a bigger main camera thanks to an advanced custom 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 sensor.

6. Super Telephoto Camera
iPhone 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the first to feature a super telephoto periscope camera for dramatically increased optical zoom. "Super" or "ultra" telephoto usually describes cameras with a focal length of over 300mm. The current telephoto lens is equivalent to a 77mm lens, so if accurate, there could be a notable increase in zoom capabilities. Super telephoto cameras are often used for sports and wild animal photography, but the extremely soft backgrounds they create also make them useful for portrait photography, providing there is enough distance between the subject and the photographer.

so for real it’s the iphone 15s

there’s the rumors of the action button on the pro models being capacitive and lets you scroll like old android phones did TEN years ago.

so i’m hopeful for updated airpod pros, new ultra watch features & maaaybe an apple ring?

all three likely to have new health tracking tech baked in.

the new iphones are the low point this cycle for me.

I've learned with my 15 Pro that fast wired charging and/or wireless charging may not be the best way to charge your iPhone. I got it on launch day and 340 cycles in, I'm at 92% battery health. My iPhone 13 reached 91% battery health after 2 years.

So the rumored faster charging with the 16 may not be that good news, I'm not upgrading anyway but I would advise against using it by default, I would advise only to use it when you really need it. When you really need to juice up quickly your best way is wired anyway and that's not as bad for the battery as wireless is.

Everything looks good as expected but nothing pathbreaking and the NAND downgrade by upgrading the storage is another point to be noted. Those coming from 12 Pro or 11 Pro, this must be a good upgrade but the RAM still will be a challenge if they look for AI and planning to use it for longer.

I’m on the yearly upgrade program and I use my phone in such a way that every year without fail my iPhone Pro battery is at 85-90% by August within 11 months. Same this year with my 15 Pro.

I welcome the 20% brighter SDR display for bright sunlight walks while using apps intensely.

The new camera pad-button will be nice, but what I’m really interested in is a better battery experience. The 15 Pro has been awful. There have been days when I’m at 9% battery life after just 9 hours of hardly any actual usage.

I am upgrading to 16 Pro Max. All colours look great. Will the new one be "rose" or "desert titanium"?

Did Apple increase orders because the Pro Max has super telephoto camera...🧐?

The Google Pixel 9 Pro has 2000 nits brightness with peak level till 3000 nits. HDR and 120 GHz refresh rates. Oh… and it comes with double the RAM 16gb

As far as the rumors about the iPhone 16 hold any truth, the camera system on the pixel is also better. With a 42 mp selfie camera on the front.

Oh… it’s cheaper as the iPhone and does come with all the ai Apple is talking about for next year.

I also get more much for my iPhone 13 Pro at Google than Apple is giving me when I buy an iPhone 15 Pro.

🤔 shall I wait and get the flesh corps color iPhone 16 pro for the price of an MacBook Air with 16 gb ram or just pay € 592 to Google and get the Pixel 9 Pro with all the bells and whistles Apple promises for next year?

🤔 let’s see what 9 September holds 😎

We don’t care. Buy what you want.

Apple is said to be weighing up the use of micro-lens technology to maintain or increase the brightness of OLED displays on next year's iPhone 16 models while potentially reducing their power consumption.
I realize this is a recap, but I find it highly amusing that this was phrased as if Apple is still thinking about a hardware feature on a device that’s already being manufactured, and the hardware design of which has presumably been finalized for months.

Coming from a 12 pro with 82% battery health, I am considering g the 16 Pro or maybe even the pro max.

I recently realized that my default video setting was 1080p/30hz. I don’t make videos often, just holidays and stuff like that, nothing fancy. But I was always dissatisfied with the quality. So imagine my “oh duh” moment when I turned on the 4k/60hz haha

Anyway, I currently have a 128gb model and noticed that the new videos were 5-6x larger in file size. Although I never had shortage of space, I am thinking of upgrading to 256 or 512 gb.

Looking forward to September 9th, hoping on some surprise because as it stands it might become my last iPhone. We are fist deep in the ecosystem (MacBooks, Mac mini, iPad, Apple TV, iPhones and watches), and my need for a new phone (especially battery wise) is much higher than the amount of tolerance for a mixed ecosystem I can build in a short amount of time, so a new iPhone for now it is, I guess.
