I beg your pardon, exclusive AI features for the next generation iPhone? So the “neural engine” in existing iPhones is for what, exactly?
It's to display battery life cycle and limit battery charging to 80%... things only the iPhone 15 can do. Exclusive AI features will be something only iPhone 16 can do.

How else will Apple get people to upgrade if not by limiting new features to newer iPhones?

You might be on to something just like Hide my E-Mail and Privat Relay (?) is iCloud+ exclusive. They can even spin it like „if you truly only care about privacy, you can stick to basic Siri but if you want to have advanced Siri functionality, you can use Siri in the Cloud and for only X Euro per month, your data will stay save in the cloud!“
What I noticed recently is if you have iCloud+ and (obviously) use more than 5 GB and something goes wrong with your monthly subscription renewal, then you won’t be able to receive iCloud email anymore because “mailbox full”. Too bad if renewing your credit card requires email somehow.

I remain leery about Apple’s ability to bring Siri up to par. It’s just so far behind Google and Alexa. I try things every day. Have Alexa, ask a question, ask the same question to Siri. With Alexa, I get exactly what I was looking for every time. With Siri, I get “here’s what I found on the web.” How how how does the most profitable tech company in the world absolutely suck at a virtual assistant literally 10 years later.

Of no interest to me personally. Don’t recall the last time I used Siri and Alexa I only use to turn on / off lights or to start playing music. Something about having to think of what to even say is too much work for me. I rather press a button somewhere
Dirty confession: I have never bothered using Siri ever since it came out in 2011. I've just left it switched off on all my Apple devices since.

I used to use it to tell me jokes when it was the most amazing thing on iPhone 4S. It’s crazy how they were sort of ahead of anyone else but never did anything with it.

Since Apple literally bought Siri and most if not all of that team has left Apple since, I honestly wonder sometimes if they simply do not have the right people to improve it anymore

AI? Let’s hope they come with their A game. So far Siri looks like she skipped practice.

That’s right Apple AI….we talkin about practice

If any of this is true, it will be interesting to compare my iPhone 11 to the phone I am upgrading to, which I assume will be called the iPhone 16 Pro Max Ultra EA Sports.

On-device processing is what crippled Siri out of the gate. Sure, I get that Apple cites privacy for this and that's important for people, but like you do with app analytics, make server-side processing optional please!

intriguing never the less. I like how some of the rumors of 16 have pushed newer ideas. This always happens with upcoming products from Apple. It is nothing new. just what apple has planned to sell more units.

Per the article the only exclusive feature would be on-device processing, existing phones would be able to use the AI features via the cloud. ChatGPT takes an enormous amount of processing power so it's entirely possible the existing neural engine designs aren't enough (or that it would be a battery killer).

The list is exhaustive for what the neural engine has been doing for years on Mac and iPhone. Dictation, background noise detection, auto correct, you name it. Just Apple doesn’t market them as AI but rather machine learning so doesn’t get all the same buzz.

these "software exclusives" are getting very silly
Don't worry, the chance of this actually happening is small. Early on we always hear about these features coming out next year, and then in six months we'll be told its delayed.

Nobody asked for this, and nobody really wants it or needs it. Other than people who buy into every bullcrap on the market, just so they can say to their friend "Look, i can turn off my lights via phone!" Ugh
Always remember rather than attempting to speak for all others, instead say, that ‘you’ did not ask for it or ‘you’ do not want it. And insulting the majority of users for having different desires may not get you far in life.

I think that’s the whole point, many do not use Siri at all because it has worked so poorly compared to competition over the years. The idea here is with LLLM it would take a massive step forward and be worth trying again.

Owning any newer iPhone right now but likely having to spend another $799-$999 to upgrade to a new iPhone just to finally get a usable version of Siri is just sad. Especially since the $799 iPhone 16 will run on the 15 Pro's SoC and therefore be 1/1 on-par with iPhones 15 Pro.

Then again, it's not like the SoC will actually make a meaningful jump in raw performance for iPhones 16 from 15, 14 or 13. So what else can Apple do to keep sales steady?

AI-this and AI-that, of course!

But I'm sure there's some new "AI Co-Processor" chip added to iPhones 16, because without it, there's "no way" to do the processing "on-device".

Heck, they can even spread all the AI improvements over several many generations of iPhones.

And just like that, a huge number of sales are secured despite less and less SoC performance increases every year.
