these "software exclusives" are getting very silly
While some exclusives, like 80% charge limit, are questionable, this one is probably tied to specific hardware to do AI processing. I do think that Apple would be better of if they adopt a hybrid approach so you can still get the enhanced AI even without the hardware for local processing by processing in their cloud. Otherwise is just leaves more people with the current subpar Siri experience.

I remain leery about Apple’s ability to bring Siri up to par. It’s just so far behind Google and Alexa. I try things every day. Have Alexa, ask a question, ask the same question to Siri. With Alexa, I get exactly what I was looking for every time. With Siri, I get “here’s what I found on the web.” How how how does the most profitable tech company in the world absolutely suck at a virtual assistant literally 10 years later.
Current Siri is a mix of a very old approach to AI with a big helping of hand written conditional code. The result is spaghetti code that is nearly impossible to modify. If they really are taking a fresh AI approach, it would have to replace large chunks of Siri to be effective. I'm hopeful that they do exactly that. It is past time for a new approach.

Getting really annoying to hear about the amazing neural engine in every chip every year, then the next year be told that only this year’s incredible neural engine can actually run Siri. WTF has that neural engine been doing for years?
Improving Apple's bottom line, Tim and ExCo's bonus and shareholder value... anything else isn't important ;)

They’re just getting so blatant.

They can tell me that not having a SIM slot means I don’t “have to” “deal with” one.

They can even try to tell me that 8 = 16.

But they can’t tell me what this “neural engine” has been doing because apparently the answer is “not much.”

Honestly, Apple receives over $200 Billion annually, year after year, for the iPhone alone: they've earned the right to try new things. My only concern is fragmenting the product line too much.

They've got to be careful.

When has Apple told you that?

Well specifically, the new watch. I believe there was mention of it in the new iPhone as well.

Not that it is the only one that can run it, but the only one that has any improvement. Considering there has been no improvement for a couple of years even though the neural engine has been in there, it seemed like a bit of a jab specifically aimed at spurring purchases.

Siri performs no better than my Android phone did at understanding and responding, and that was in 2015 with no neural engine. It hasn’t noticeably improved since at least the iPhone 11 but every year we hear about the bigger neural engine but not much about its actual application.

Maybe it’s just that their marketing didn’t do them any favors by basically telling us nothing about it until now.

I just tried this and Siri responded quickly and correctly. This is why I don't believe the vast majority of the assertions made on the forum.
Imagination and empathy are required in order to understand that people can have different experiences to the same things as you do.

The core vision of Apple, to me at last (YMMV), is the Personal Computer. In many, many ways that is the brand trueline, a machine that is simple, beautiful, works easily and becomes part of your personal and professional life. The iPhone – and in horizontal extension the iPad, Watch and even the Mac which has partly become part of the iOS ecosphere – is a true example of an almost invisible machine that KNOWS you and more and more fits in your life. It is staggering how much personal information the iPhone has available, health, work, psychological, financial and so on. The VisionPro adds to that mix of a very individual, personal experience, it fits the bill. Adding a good, personalized LLM to the mix will bring Apple and us THAT much closer to this vision of a kind of Personal Assistant that can coach you, help you, keep you updated and in check, has an eye on your health and so on. More than any other company, Apple would probably not want «AI» to paint or retouch some pictures or write your eMails or reports, but for smaller-looking things that will integrate with the ecosystem they already have established and the data the device keeps of your life and daily habits. Done right, or done even half-effing-right it will be a total and complete game changer, bringing us a little bit closer to advanced technology = magic. ChatGPT, SD, Midjourney et al are even in their early stages very amazing creative tools – but integrating a learning model with iOS’s interlocking system of data, applications and services... this kind of integration is way, way more important than anything a better hardware could offer. The first company to reach this kind of SF-like tech will change the market and our concept of «computer». And for Apple, that would be the third time, at least.

Is this the best way they can get people to be forced to get the new iPhone?

So much for sustainability when older phones can do it easily.

So all those neural processors on our current phones will be useless for anything other than the current dumb Siri, aka AS (Artificial Stupidity).

I've never understood why Craig Federighi hasn't been fired long ago. He is the ball and chain of Apple devices.

Presumably something to do with those photos he has of Tim Cook and that goat ;)

Very possible that some of the new features will be available only on iPhone 16 series.

So just wondering how did you manage to get an action button on your 14 Pro. As far as I knew it was only on the 15 pro models. Did you modify your 14 to have one? 😋
Sorry 15 Pro, can’t even keep up anymore 😅

Had to read this 3 times to fully comprehend but it was worth it.

Apple at WWDC 2024 will reveal a turbo-charged version of Siri powered by large language models (LLMs) that will debut in iOS 18, but some new cutting-edge generative AI features could be exclusive to iPhone 16 models, according to a new rumor.

iPhone-16-Side-2-Feature.jpg

Last month, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman revealed that Apple is developing a large array of features that use generative AI, including a "smarter version of Siri" and new LLM-based AI features that will be baked into iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

Gurman said Apple was still debating whether to limit generative AI to on-device processing, deploy it via the cloud, or adopt a hybrid approach combining the two. It was not mentioned either way whether some AI features would require specific hardware architecture or trickle down to all models capable of running iOS 18.

However, according to new information independently shared by the leaker @Tech_Reve, iOS 18 will bring the company's new LLM to millions of existing devices by using cloud-based AI, while new on-device AI features will likely remain exclusive to the iPhone 16.

In terms of iOS 18 features, Gurman's sources mention a revamped interaction between ‌Siri‌ and the Messages app, enabling users to field complex questions and auto-complete sentences more effectively. We may also see auto-generated Apple Music playlists and integration with productivity apps like Pages and Keynote, such as AI-assisted writing and slide deck creation. Where this patina of AI integration crosses over into new hardware requirements is still unknown.

Apple is designing new A-series chips for the iPhone 16 lineup, built on TSMC's latest N3E 3-nanometer node. Efficiency and performance improvements are of course expected, but there could be other benefits that feed into Apple's AI intentions. Notably, TSMC is the sole manufacturer for Nvidia's powerful H100 and A100 AI processors, the hardware that powers AI tools like ChatGPT and which also comprises the majority of AI data centers.

All models in the iPhone 16 series are also rumored to have an extra button that we don't know the purpose of yet. Internal versions of the iPhone 16 that Apple is working on include an extra capacitive button, known internally as the "Capture Button."

The button is located on the same side as the Power button, and is a capacitive button that is able to detect pressure and touch, providing haptic feedback when pressed. There has been no word yet on what this button might be used for, but it could conceivably have unforeseen practical AI applications.

Apple is said to be on course to spend $1 billion per year on AI research, with some of the company's biggest executive names overseeing development, including senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi, senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy John Giannandrea, and senior vice president of services Eddy Cue.

„There has been no word yet on what this button might be used for, but it could conceivably have unforeseen practical AI applications.“
I think it will be for a practical ProVision application: If you get totally immersed or lost in the VR world unable to find your way out, you reach for your iPh16 and press the new button. It will work like an ejector seat and catapult you back to reality. Or one of your family members can do so if you do not respond to „dinner is ready“ …

It is past time and many of us have been waiting for a very long time such that we would be very disappointed if we would have to buy the absolute latest device in order for what we waited for to work. Even if they have to have cloud processing, it would be very nice if they would make the new siri available to everyone.
