This is where I thought the action button should have gone, so I'm happy to see a button going there. I'll echo an earlier comment and say hopefully it's configurable (I'd probably keep it for the camera though).

So why does everyone think that thing is a new capture button and not just a mmwave cutout like on the previous phones?

That capture button seems quite high on those diagrams which will make it more difficult to press when holding the phone in landscape orientation. Then again, it might be easier to press when holding the phone vertically and that is what people do these days in the age of social media posts.

So would the capture button be solid state? If so, how does that work with cases? (I imagine there is a way to do it, I just don't know it.)

I wish you luck, but it sure sounds like "I swear to god this is my last drink/chocolate/cigarette"
Some how i have to back you up on this, recently i did this transition from 14PM to S24U, just recently i moved from S24U to 12PM, Why? The S24U’s camera is years ahead of of iPhone but the OS still just as little behind apple, still. Same thing with the galaxy watch, design and innovation is way much better than apple but the OS still not there, yet. I didn’t feel comfortable with it so I went back to 12PM, why? Because the OS is just more complex and the camera, in my opinion is by far the best camera that apple could build on a phone before they destroyed it beginning with the 13 series.

Hmmm. What I know is working at Apple design now is one of the “Incredibly” easy job in technology industry because in one year you only needs to relocating the buttons and adds some emojis. That’s it.

So many buttons to accidentally click!
I hope the capture button is configurable, and just a second action button.

All evidence suggests that Apple has abandoned the goal of the “seamless piece of glass” favored by Jobs and Ive. But what I don’t see is a coherent vision for the iPhone to replace it. Probably because the top leadership at a design company no longer includes professionals with deep design backgrounds.

In a time when other phone manufacturers are adding better cameras, bigger batteries, and pushing the boundaries of software with cutting-edge AI features, I'm glad Apple is focusing on what's really important in the world of mobile phone technology: strategically placed buttons.

I can't wait for the new iPhone, it will truly be the most revolutionary and magical™ iPhone ever. :p
I love how Jony Ive's uttered word "Magical" on the original iPad launch has been finely aging like a delicious Chateau D'Yquem wine.
I think Apple should trademark that word, so it would be like your comment from that moment onward lol. :p

Gone is the design where you intuitively knew what each button’s primary function is. Without a tutorial, instincts would have told you those were the power and volume buttons.

Now you have a myriad of buttons with no clear purpose.

If anything, the switch should have stayed and the Action and camera buttons merged. Works as an Action button outside camera apps, otherwise camera functions take priority.

Imagine telling someone on these forums with an iPhone X in 2017, right after they got rid of the home button, that the 2024 iPhone would have more buttons than the iPhone 8.

You’re right. Apple definitely never upgrades their cameras or increases their battery capacity on the iPhone nearly every year. That’s why the iPhone is always rated as having the worst cameras and battery life annually. And we’ve heard absolutely zero rumors about any AI features coming to iPhone later this year. I bet they do nothing!

I also love your comment about the iPhone being magical, because Apple always says their stuff is magical in their marketing materials from a decade ago! And that’s why the joke works. Never heard that one before! I am in tears, comment of the decade!

I don’t see why the iPhone needs a yearly release anymore. It’s become like the Mac and become a mature product. I don’t even think it needs a number but just the year it was released. Phones are not changing anymore and people are holding on to them longer and longer.

Of course there would be a small change, gotta sell new cases somehow.
Please stop this nonsense. iPhone Pro models have changed dimensions all recent years except for the 12->13 year. So it doesn’t matter whether buttons move or not, find a better theory. Besides that, the downsides of changing this kind of things are way higher than capturing the tiny amount of people who would otherwise keep their 3-year case. Reminds me of “Apple keeps lightning to sell cable and licenses”. Check Apple’s quarter report.

I’m still not sure if this will be a good idea. However, about Jobs and Ive not doing weird things on products with a clear vision:
  • Video camera on the 2009 iPod Nano.
  • Loop strap on the 2012 iPod Touch (definitely overseen by Jobs).

I don’t think you really have a point here. My comment is in regard to Apple’s lack of executives with a deep design background, which leads to products that have no sizzle.

At some point, the camera array opening in iPhone cases will be large enough that all cases will be bumper cases.

Nah, they'll need separate bumpers for the camera module alone
