I do remember, during the 14 rumor days, people saying there was “no way” Apple was moving away from the notch because they had *just* shrunk it with the 13.

But lo and behold, the dynamic island happened anyway and did away with the smaller notch.

This rumor is for the 16 (next year) which I could totally see happening.

It’s great to know these things, however it can also take the focus away from here and now, let people enjoy what they have before making even the iPhone 25 obsolete before it’s release, Christ!

Hoping I can get maximum features BEFORE apple switches to their own 5g modems. Hopefully that gets delayed until 2025 and I can pick up a refined iPhone 16 pro with a hole punch. I really dislike the space taken up by dynamic island (the UX is great but the actual island is an eye sore)

They would, and what's even scarier... the removal will be marketed as a selling point

Everything Apple removes is marketed as a selling point. Remember when they told you “you no longer have to deal with a sim card!” I think this is probably the most egregious example of this hard sell attitude.

eh boring, I think I am ready to try out one of those next gen Fold devices later this year or next year. I have had so many iPhones and iOS has practically been the same for years, it does not really matter what iPhone you use at this point (I am not saying this is a bad thing. Things just hit a wall eventually) but I am ready to try something else for fun
I would try a folding device, but I just don't care for Samsung's software. I think they make good-looking hardware, but OneUI just doesn't do it for me. Google's folding Pixel device has my interest piqued, but I'm not totally sure I'd want to buy a first-gen from them (although they seem to be improving their hardware chops year by year).

The iPhone 16 Pro will feature under-display Face ID technology to provide more usable display area, according to The Elec.

The Korean-language report explains that Apple will move the components required for Face ID authentication directly under the iPhone's display in 2024. When not in use, the TrueDepth camera for Face ID will not be visible under the display, which will appear seamlessly contiguous with the surrounding screen area.

The report clarified that the hole in the display for the front-facing camera will remain on the iPhone 16 Pro, but the overall display area and sense of immersion will be improved. It added that the display cutouts will remain the same from the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 15 Pro later this year since the under-display technology is not yet ready.

It also corroborated rumors that all four models in the iPhone 15 lineup will offer the Dynamic Island, expanding the feature from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to the two standard models later in 2023.

Further in the future, the report added that once Apple has implemented under-display Face ID technology, it will move to adopt an underpanel camera (UPC), thereby eliminating all of the display cutouts currently present on the iPhone.

This aligns with the roadmap set out by display analyst Ross Young in May 2022. He outlined a cycle where Apple will alternate between the Pro and the non-Pro models each year when introducing revised display cutouts or new under-display technology:

The Pro models will be first to new display innovations of this kind, as first seen last year with the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, while the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus were left with the same "notch" as the iPhone 13. This also means that each configuration of display cutouts and underpanel technology will persist for a maximum of two generations on each iPhone before the device has total usable display area sometime around 2027.

Ha! If you know anything about how cameras work, you would realize this is impossible.

Cameras need light. The light has to pass through something transparent. Where there's a camera, there cannot be LEDs.

On your last point, my teenage children already have an advanced research program underway. Initial results are said to be on their way and will be available once TikTok calms down a bit.

my dream is for an all display phone so face id and selfie camera under the screen.

so looks like i'll be skipping this (if true) because i'll get a 15 Ultra this year and that will do me another 3-4 years. maybe by then apple will figure out how to have both face id and selfie camera hidden.

that said, i don't hate the notch or the look of the dynamic island. so really i'm not bothered what they do.

Yes it’s a shame that Android is sort of a mess with too many devices so developers don’t really bother to adjust their apps for foldable. This and the narrow folded screen on the Samsung are holding me back. The Google Fold leaks look promissing cuz it’s folded screen seems wider and Google may give it a little push in regards of app availability. We will see where it goes

one of these years this will be true... keep guessing... the "dynamic island" is the biggest piece of garbage that apple as ever tried to spin into a positive.. So I'll be happy when it gets here...

Yup! and I was one of the idiots that fell for that crap hook line and sinker. They made it look so amazing during the presentation, i thought all notifications would be on the island and it would be so much more useful than what it turned out to be. Oh well lesson learned I will definitely not fall for whatever marketing gimmick they try to hype this year.
