I would wait till the 16 then. Capacitive buttons? Wait a year to see how that works out. But then the foldable will be coming out! Best to wait another year and see the teething pains worked out.

Meh. happy with my iPhone 14 PM - with the sim tray (Canadian Version).

Not going to happen - again. They are not introducing dynamic island just to remove it again in the next version - thats gonna take 5 versions. So iPhone 20 is gonna have it under the display.
There is still going to be a hole for the front-facing camera. Only the Face ID components are moving behind the display. My guess is that it'll be a smaller dynamic island.

From the article:
The report clarified that the hole in the display for the front-facing camera will remain on the iPhone 16 Pro, but the overall display area and sense of immersion will be improved.

While I could get behind this, I think their solution with the "pull shape" is pretty elegant.

Unless there's a way to make the selfie camera "invisible" also, which maybe there is, I'm not sure this will matter to me all that much.

I’ve always deluded myself that the possible haptic buttons possibly coming could become multipurpose and developers can use them for various quick actions like the Apple Watch Ultra does.

I also pray that a Touch ID function build into them would work.

While face masks are a huge reason, some security policies are so strict that any additional authentication mechanism provided would be amazing.

The iPhone 16 Pro will feature under-display Face ID technology to provide more usable display area, according to The Elec.

The Korean-language report explains that Apple will move the components required for Face ID authentication directly under the iPhone's display in 2024. When not in use, the TrueDepth camera for Face ID will not be visible under the display, which will appear seamlessly contiguous with the surrounding screen area.
....
This aligns with the roadmap set out by display analyst Ross Young in May 2022. He outlined a cycle where Apple will alternate between the Pro and the non-Pro models each year when introducing revised display cutouts or new under-display technology:

What is pretty unclear is what is the "quality" factor being used for these predictions. There is a huge functional gap between the "low defect rate of placing this under the screen pixels ( get good pixels and 'working' sensor) " and get zero drop off in identification accuracy. Most of the "under screen" fingerprint solutions have not gone "up" in fidelity quality. By general reports most are preforming worse ( accuracy problems , etc. )

The notion can do this without sacrificing accuracy is somewhat dubious when the regular camera ... still there. No screen door effect put on top of that lens. There will be tap dancing about how the AI/ML is going to automagically fill back in the accuracy 3D data being thrown away here. That somewhat shuffles under the rug that the AI/ML might do an even better job if gave it less degraded data ( FaceID accuracy/fidelity could improve. Instead throwing that away for form over function. )

It probably does incrementally help though to turn the pixels layered on top off ( no overlapping spectrum contributions making the screen door effect even worse. )

If this is superficially hiding Face ID sensors so they get less about to get to peak accuracy, that isn't progress. It is likely just giving in to the notch and bezel haters to sell more phones; not better security.

Yesss, a reason to skip the 15 Pro.
The 15 Pro will only be worth it if your current iPhone is on its last legs or USB-C is extremely important for you for some reason. It’s always possible that Apple could give the smaller Pro model the periscope lens instead of keeping it exclusive to the larger “Ultra” model so maybe going from 3x to 5/6x would be enough of an incentive to upgrade. It’s quite possible that Apple will want to visually differentiate the 16 Pro/Ultra from the lower end models that now will have the dynamic island feature.

Wouldn't mind seeing both TouchID and FaceID on the iphone for added security. This would have the added benefit of eliminating unintentional FaceID unlocks. Same goes for the Mac.

I hope apple is able to pull off the under display technology for both on the phone.

Isn't the dynamic island coming to regular 15 models? Don't see it going anywhere at least for another few years.

Six weeks before it’s released, analysts will say, “Apple made a last minute change and will not be shipping the under screen reader” hoping that the general public doesn’t understand the time frames allowed for those decisions to be made :)

A lot of us are still kind of too stuck in the details to see what Apple are moving towards.
The iPhone of the future will look more like Google's project Starline.
It will be less of a phone and more of a hole, a portal, or a window, whatever you want to call it. Working out all of the kinks with that so that eye contact can be maintained, color is good, motion blur is nonexistent, etc., is being worked out through these tech upgrades (90Hz screen, removing the notch, under-display Face ID and on).
All of this is interesting but ultimately, when you hit the point where the tech becomes invisible and you see through to the other side, you can't do a whole lot more beyond that.
Though I guess there is always "smell-o-vision"...
