A lot of people want the coolest nicest Iphone to take a few photos and videos, close ups of their kids and pets and have them backed up to iCloud.

Nothing wrong with that.

And these people are ok with 128 most probably

What's different about the Pro Max camera system that it requires 256GB instead?

Not the right question.

Look at the 15 Pro vs 15 Pro Max price + feature set. You're not just paying more for a bigger screen, you're paying for the 5x telephoto feature that isn't present in 15 Pro.

16 Pro and 16 Pro Max have the same camera features now but still has a $200 difference between the two. So Apple could lower the price or add/increase something on the 16 Pro Max over the 16 Pro.

What if they started at 64GB? 32GB? How low are you willing to accept?

my iOS 17 iPhone is currently using 35GB for iOS + system data. 32GB is already out of the question.
Apple generally has 5+ years of updates. Major iOS updates are 10GB. so 64GB should be good enough...but wait! now we have these very large local models for Apple Intelligence. so 128GB seems good enough for small basic data + running Apple Intelligence.

Surprised to see 128GB Pro. Was expecting base 256 at $1099. Probably will happen next year when a new Slim/Air model is released.

Totally agree. The Pro phones are basically for taking a bunch of 4K videos, doesn't make sense to ship them with 128GB

it will be bought by regular people who feel they want the best iPhone. They'll just take bad photos and videos, post them to social media and use iCloud Photo Library to store all their photos and videos.

Pro in this case means more expensive and some better functionality like better screen and better camera to people.

You just upgrade the storage and pay more. It's not that difficult.

I have 128Gb in my iPhone 14 Pro and use 51Gb. I would just upgrade to a 64Gb or a 128Gb model if it came with 32Gb.

as it should.

if you want 256GB, simply select the option. not hard people.

why would you want Apple to set the higher tier price as the base and denying people the option of having a Pro phone with enough storage they need? oh because *you* think you know what's best for these people who don't need the extra space?
128GB works OK for me on a 14 Pro, so I'll stick to the same if I upgrade to the 16 Pro.

The 128GB model is purely for show and tell. "We still offer a $999 model, even though nobody in the right mind will buy it."

That model will be a huge success, with the majority of Apple customers looking for a new iPhone purchasing it.

And twice the base storage, 256GB vs 128GB. And a battery that lasts longer per charge.

Well they specifically advertise 4K 120hz for the Pro, so of course a lot of consumers will use it. And it takes up A LOT of storage. Like even 256GB is not enough.

obviously you'll pay for a larger battery in a larger phone.

Of course. Want more features, pay more money. Don't need the extra features, save some money.

That's the way it works with every consumer product (cars, homes, computers, printers, washing machines, furniture, tools, and on and on).

great, I think you're agreeing with me: keep the options. people who don't want 256GB and want 128GB should be able to continue paying for 128GB. they shouldn't be forced to upgrade to 256GB because people wanted 256GB to be base.

I was hoping both Pro models would come with 256GB as the base, but honestly, I’ve had the 128GB 13 Pro Max for almost 3 years now—with years of photos, a good amount of 4K videos, and all the apps I need—and I still have half my storage left.

And for longer pro 120 FPS videos, even 256GB or 512GB will be too small. Anyone doing pro-level video shoots will need an external SSD.
