iPhone 16 to Include an Additional Capacitive 'Capture' Button

I see a lot of posts demanding something different because the iPhone is stale.
I’ve also seen a lot of people upset that the new Action Button took away their beloved mute switch.
How many people made both complaints?

Not sure why the article says that it’s not known what the button would be for, because it’s obviously a dedicated camera shutter button. It’s in the name AND it’s located at exactly the right spot for that to function well.

I’d bet on it being a shortcut to specifically capturing VR/AR content (separate to your standard camera shortcut). They’ll want to push people to make content for the Apple headset without it being buried in settings, or capturing as standard like Live Photos and taking up a bunch of space. This will be a way of Apple marketing their VR/AR. It will probability incorporate some type of sharability function. And Apple will develop a VR social network. Competitors will say that it is anticompetetive. Apple will then make the button assignable to other functions before they are forced to by law. I also know who wins the next election.

We just need something new. I'm keeping my 12 Pro for now because not even the 15 Pro feels new.
My 12 Pro felt new coming from the 8. We just need something different.

I love my iPhone. I don’t want something new. Incremental improvements are fine by me.

My hunch is the capacitive button will replace an existing button, like Power or Action; or it’s the resurrected volume rocker.

I might be in the minority but I find the current location of the power button dumb and prone to mis-presses especially if you're using the opposite side for leverage to actuate the volume buttons.

A two stage shutter button would be great. And, as someone said earlier in the thread, a single click to open the camera, and a click and hold to start video recording. Maybe you could hold the first stage of the click to immediately bring up the camera viewfinder from anywhere, and then fully click to take the picture.

So happy I skipped the 15 Pro! Absolutely getting the 16 Pro. 15 was too similar to my 14 Pro.

IMO the iphone3G was the only one worth upgrading and i've been skipping since I saw updates on macrumors.

Great article! Have a hunch pro models will have similar arrangement with 3 camera models in a vertical, traffic-light pattern. This spaces out cameras one and 3 to a human-level IPD. Great for spatial video.

FWIW, the capture button should be on the lower left corner of phone. This would give gamers L and R buttons.

The current lens centers are about 19.5mm apart, so at the current spacing you'd want a line of 4 lenses to get close to average human IPD, maybe with an ultrawide, wide, tele, 2nd ultrawide layout.
