I don't see that, until they lower the price. In six months, the normal iphone will be only a 100 bucks more, and the E has nothing over it, unlike the SE3 did with smaller size and touchid, for those who preferred that. By the time 18 comes out, 16 would cost the same as the E now. Interesting to see what their strategy will be. Stop selling phones from except current or last gen? Lower the price of the actual E in cadence with it's "parent" gen?

From a logistics standpoint, releasing a new E when when the base iphone using the same chip as the current E gets retired would make sense. But then the pricing would be wrong. Iphone 14 not being on sale is an anomaly because of the usb-c transition.
I’m not convinced the iPhone 16 will still be available in the retail channel after October 2026.

Of course it will
Apple will remove the 15’s & 16 pro & 16 pm
Then the line up will probably be
16E
16 & 16 plus
17
17 air
17 pro & pm come September

I had edited my post as you posted yours. It should have read 2026.

But then again at this point, I don’t think anything is guaranteed.

Apple will eventually, probably soon, not allow you turn off Apple Intelligence, since it will be too integrated into the OS. So the actual RAM available for other tasks will probably stay very low.

Unlikely anytime soon. Even after all these years, voice activated Siri is still optional for example.

That won't fly in the EU.

Apple never publicly advertises the amount of RAM included in iPhones, but MacRumors has confirmed that the iPhone 16e is equipped with 8GB of RAM.

Given the iPhone 16e supports Apple Intelligence, it was widely expected that the device would have 8GB of RAM, as that is the minimum amount of memory required for Apple Intelligence. All other iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models also have 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone SE that was replaced by the iPhone 16e is equipped with 4GB of RAM.

We confirmed the iPhone 16e's amount of RAM in Apple's developer tool Xcode, with assistance from MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.

iPhone 16e pre-ordering begins this Friday at 5 a.m. Pacific Time in nearly 60 countries, and the device will launch on Friday, February 28.

With Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence, Apple seems intent on insisting people embrace things they do not want. Of course Timmy did gift Trump $1 million of his own money, and make the trek to kiss the ring, so I suppose anything is possible. Worrisome times.

Doubtful. You have always been able to turn of Siri and all associated services, and I think Apple AI will keep a switch.

Yes they might keep a switch but going forward very few people in the grand scheme of things are going to turn Apple intelligence off

I think it plays against their aspirational product stories: these phones and computers ought to be regarded more as appliances than pieces of technology. It has been this way for a while- what story does the product tell. It's worked well for a long time but not in this scenario.

The Apple experience is fine-tuned by the core technologies that are exclusive to the ecosystem, not raw specs like RAM and storage metrics.

I know Apple can’t please everyone and I think some of this phone goes in the right direction, but it comes up short in some ways.

I like the reduced camera bump (even with a “less capable” camera), and I happen to prefer the notch over a hole in the middle of the display (though I would happily take a small bezel space on top for camera/sensors to have a completely clean display area). The 60 Hz display is not a big deal to me *if* they keep the price low. Extra memory is good especially if you are like me and have no desire to enable AI.

All that said, I feel this phone should have been priced around $450. In fact, this phone’s features in a smaller (<6 inch display) device for $450 would have been great, and more believable as a “budget” phone. I think the fact that buyers will be essentially beta testing Apple’s first attempt at a modem chip alone warrants a lower price.

All those explanations were from Apple fanboys coming up with cognitive dissonance excuses.

"Not all iPhones support charge limit because it requires additional hardware."

"More RAM uses more power. Better to have less RAM."

"Apple SSD is expensive because it's more durable. Soldering is better than encryption."

"Repairing a MacBook hinge could be a security vulnerability. That's why Apple serializes that part."

"Nobody needs a power adapter or EarPods included in the box. They don't need to pass on the savings."
And thousands more will chant it and echo chamber it to the absolute limit. It’s as if Apple could never do wrong and had never made any mistakes and will never make one, when reality is the total opposite.

The added RAM is very beneficial even if one is not going to use Apple Intelligence features. Thankfully due to the AI features, customers get more RAM. Happy with this.

More base RAM being required is by far my favorite feature of Apple Intelligence

That is the literally the only reason I got a Mac Mini M4 (the base model came with 16GB of RAM)

Paradoxically it has the opposite effect. More RAM means pulling from storage less for sleeping apps. It's bananas

iOS doesn't use swapping.

The energy usage for RAM may affect the standby time, all those hours where you aren't using your iPhone. Since RAM needs to constantly powered it's need to be powered 24h/day. The SSD can be power down quite frequently.

Why do ppl think apple doesn’t disclose RAM size? To not look like cheapos, or what??

It's not an area they want to compete in and they want to keep the cost as low as possible. There's no advantage to Apple to reveal this since most iPhone users don't really care or know of to use the information.

I appreciate someone mentioning this

We used to hear every manner of excuse to cover for the low RAM ... other than the real reason, which was, to your point, Apple being greedy

Then Apple's doing what is right. What's wrong is people like you wanting companies to be something they weren't meant to be.

A lot of humans should do exactly the same as Apple: Increase revenue, reduce cost and increase profit.
