I just don’t see who their target consumer is with this. It’s not a “mini” and it’s not a “plus” and it occupies a bizarre area in the lineup. Maybe it sells well but worse battery life is gonna be a killer for a whole lot of folks.
I am a mini fan. I am still using my iPhone Mini 12 and have refused to upgrade. I am very excited for the 17 Air. It was never about screen size for me, it was about weight. I don’t want to carry a brick in my shorts pocket… which is what every iPhone since the 5 (and the 12/13 mini too but the 5 was nicer) feels like.

It really needs to match the battery life of the base iPhone 16 at least. If its closer to the 13 Mini then it will get a lot of criticism for sure. But then again some people may be fine with a lightweight, large screen iPhone with average battery life.

iPhone 26 camera bump

Apple needs a W bad and this just pulls them further down the Loss column. The media and even more the people are gonna have a field day with this one, GD this is one ugly ass design.
I feel the opposite. Still lugging my weighty 14Pro, I may just sacrifice some lenses for a lighter experience.

It is indeed confusing. What's the 17 Air positioning? High end or low end market? It's kinda like iPhone 16e with single camera, but that kind of thinness will obviously demand premium pricetag. Not to mention the risk of losing USB-C port because it'd be too thick to fit in, or at least dumbed down to USB 2.0 speed, as usual.

No one is going to buy this thing. I don't understand the market for this but not a Mini iPhone.
I was able to go hands-on with the S25 Edge at Best Buy yesterday, and, as a former iPhone 12 mini (and current iPhone 16 Pro) user, I think I would be the target consumer for a device of this niche, if it didn't have the inherent compromises that it does.

For me, it's much more about the weight savings than the thinness. I do recognize that I, personally, need a very long battery life, which is something that my 16 Pro unfortunately doesn't provide me with anymore, and that I use a telephoto lens a whole lot, but really, the biggest issue for me with this emerging segment is that the phones are all Plus-sized, instead of also being offered in a size closer to 6.0 inches. (To be completely honest, I found 6.1 inches to be much better than the current 6.3 inches, if only because there were less accidental taps on the screen.)

Apart from the bump being too “bumpy”, now that it stretches over the whole width, the glossiness also makes it look cheap.

What is the point of this huge camera bump when the lens itself is still sticking out like wtf.
Without the bump, the camera would look even more ridiculous. The total camera height looks to be as thick, or even slightly thicker, than the main body:

i know i am the only one… wishing a new iphone with the size of an iphone 11pro or 13 mini. make it 2-3mm thicker to hide the opticals without bumps and have a good battery performance and call it „iphone brick“

It does look so good. Unfortunately the battery probably looks quite the opposite of so good.
I and a lot of other people are around chargers literally 24/7. I am no further than 5 feet from a charger, 24/7. Not to mention this is all a rumor and apple will likely shock us with a new battery type or some other technology. Apple has well poisoned before spreading outregous rumors about problems in the next model only for it to be complete nonsense. (The price of the Ultra was a good example) or rumors of the price rising for the mini/air only for it to be lower.

I don't want a small screen, I want a thin and light phone with a big screen. A lot of people hate small screens but don't want to carry a rock in their pocket (which is what the current iPhone is)

Does not look good. You can do a raised camera or a camera bar. Not both. That is one fugly design.
It's a 'no' from me for the same reasons as above. And only one rear camera lens? If they're sticking them out further than the 'main' bump then they may as well put all the lenses in there.

But really, it's a solution in search of a problem.
This is a mockup from a fan/random person and not the official design...

I am, I have zero interest in a phone with a small screen (and why I never I owned an iPhone until the 6+ came out).

I don't get it... As surely the thinnest part of the phone is going to also be the thickest..? Once a case goes on to also protect the camera bump, it is not really doing what it is claiming to be IMO.
Why on earth would you use a case on a beautiful phone or thin phone. The point of it is to be thin. I would never.

Again this isnt the official design it a mockup from fans/whatever based on leaked specs / info.

The camera bumps have been glossy for a while now, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s accurate. I already don’t like how the existing bumps are glossy, but stretching them over the whole width will it make even more glaring.

This is probably the phone I'm going to get but I must say it's hilarious how they talked about corner radiuses and concentricity for 5 hours at WWDC only to come up with a camera bump that isn't concentric with the phone body. It kind of annoys me how it feels out of place.
