Thinking the same. One speaker, no mention of always on display, are both deal breakers for me personally. At the end of the day, I may end up with another Pro Max, or maybe keep my 15 Pro Max, and get an android flagship to run for a while.
Anyone currently driving a Pro Max is unlikely to be happy downgrading to an Air.

Everything looks good except the single lens on the rear and only eSIM worldwide. Looking forward to more rumors and leaks in the coming months.

I will not be buying one, but I would love to wager that you are wrong. I say This phone will not be a flop.
I think it will sell like hot cakes - I'm definitely getting it if the rumours about specs are true just to feel something different in my hand other than pro/pro max size and weight. Now keeping it after buying it is a different story and will depend on camera performance and battery life, which was also the reason I returned this year's 16 in that amazing blue and went for the pro yet again.

And yet I bought one the last two years. I think the Plus just needed a 120hz refresh rate and maybe another "bonus" feature over the regular phone, and it would have been a hit. For me, it's almost the perfect phone because I want as much screen as possible.
To be fair, both the minis and pluses are hits in comparison to what the competition sells - they are just not that big of a hit for Apple standards (like iPhone 5c back in the day. Any other company would want a "fail" like that)

Would expect RAM spec to bump up significantly in the next few years given apples preference to perform a lot of the AI processing on device.

8 GB for iPhone 16 is a bit on the low side as is the 8 GB allocated for base model iPads.

I suspect those devices will only support some Apple Intelligence features in a few years or just rely more on off device processing, otherwise the minimal RAM increases by Apple would essentially be a way to make more people upgrade.

It’s actually very bizarre that the lowest spec iPad doesn’t have Apple intelligence. Apple Intelligence would ironically be the safest way for educational users to explore AI as Apple would have full control and it would be privacy first.

In for one on day 1... likely add something like a Suti back to keep it grippy and to not make it much thicker. of course, some people will put it in a case like this ;)
I don't understand the Suti back. How does it stay attached to the phone? Some sort of glue? And it doesn't protect the screen which defeats the whole purpose of a case.

Regrettably those “morons” make good money doing that stuff, especially when there’s a potential “-gate” to stir the pot with. Remember antenna-gate and previous bend-gates. There’s money to be made making Apple look bad. And don't forget all the drop tests that destroy a perfectly good device fro no good reason other than making a few bucks on YouTube.
Bendgate was a real thing. The iPhone 6 slipped into pockets really nicely, so nicely that eventually you forgot it was in there when you sat down and, ooops, one destroyed iPhone 6. Very expensive lesson learned: never put a phone in your back pocket.

MagSafe.. I really like them.. zero drop protection for the most part, but makes the phone so much more "grippable"

If this comes with no bump whatsoever, I definitely see a market for it. I use a Z Flip, which technically has a bump but a tiny one! I find the way that the bumps unbalance phones lying down just daft. Most have zero need for the camera power that it represents, and the sleek design going back to the iPhone 3G is still my favourite. My previous Z Flip was similarly nice with its curved edges everywhere, but even the new one of those is all hard corners, painful to hold, and slippery.... We really have come a long way, but so much in the wrong direction!

I don't get the appeal, but I hope it makes others happy. If they came out with a magically light iPad on the other hand, that I could get excited about. Something as light as a thin book.

It’s clear for me this year, if the complete lineup will have aluminium frames and pro motion 120hz and the only differentiating factors are better chip and cameras, I will most likely go for the standard 17. I currently have a pro and do not utilise the camera enough to justify the extra cost and I will probably wait a year or two to see what the long term results are with the Air being a new model

That is an ugly design. The entire 17 series look horrendous, especially when compared with Honor, Nothing and Vivo. I can't believe the Chinese OEMs now have better design language than Apple.

The Nothing 3a Pro is $460+tax BTW

Don’t love the rumoured 17 Air design language, but it’s better than both examples you just provided there.

I can't look at those phones and then call any iPhone model ugly by comparison. Both of those phones are absolutely horrible looking, I wouldn't own either one of them even if they were given to me as a gift.
