Yes, but a, say 3mm, think battery cell taking up whatever x-/y-space is available in an iPhone 17 probably won't give the phone the required day-long operation. A Huawai foldable is the size of an iPad Mini.
I understand, I was pointing out:
“The device's reduced thickness is apparently dependent on manufacturing a battery with a thinner substrate, but Apple is now facing technical compromises.”

There are technical solutions for a thinner battery, and iPhone’s battery doesn’t have the highest density compared to competitors.

iPhone are also wasting a lot of internal spaces, the logic board are not as dense as Android due to separate 5g modem and wifi chips. And a lot of connectors.
There are ways to do it, just whether they want to.

Also I was surprised this iPhone air is not a foldable. If it’s actually a foldable and it’s thicker than iPhone 6, I will be disappointed

If anything I think a thick iPhone with ungodly battery life would be more popular

Dollars to donuts thing thing will be 6.8mm thick; marketing rules the day and is the only purpose for this, outside of maybe setting the stage for a foldable.

If that means the bezels are increased by 1mm to make the unit wider to have a .2mm thinner battery, so be it.

Sorry, but I think that's total nonsense - customers should never have to do analysis? Why on earth should a customer be relieved from doing even 5 minutes of research?

If we follow that train of thought to its logical conclusion, then we should have only one iPad right? And only one phone? And only on laptop? And only one desktop? Base configurations only, that way customers don't need to think about such complexities as storage and RAM too. And remove all colour options.

Let's relieve customers from making any decisions at all before they throw their hundreds or even of thousands of dollars at Apple.

What about cars? Get rid of all options there too right?
Chinese EV companies are trimming down the options, so is tesla.
For one model there’s usually only three options to choose from:
- a basic one with all equipments necessary for a nice car, sometime including air suspensions
- a standard one that have all of the bells and whistles. Mostly tech equipments like full self driving, more sensors, faster chips for the OS, back seat entertainment, etc. Things a lot of people don’t care to lose.
- A maxed out version with cutting edge innovations no one else have.

And they are really doing great with those options. And like that wayyy more than needing to hop between webpages to compare between the available options on different trims offered by traditional car companies.

By trimming down the options, they can also spend more time on better integration, and build more tech in house. Eventually the price are brought down, as you can see with their competitive pricing.

Perfect opportunity to make an iPhone Mini instead.
If this time they call all sizes just iPhone, it would sell successfully.
There are different sizes of Apple Watch, MacBooks and iPad Pro, but you don’t see Apple naming them Apple Watch Mini, MacBook Air Mini, iPad Pro Mini, etc…

I hate this focus on thinness so much. Apple, please give us THICK. No camera bump and all-weekend battery. They are already too thin.

How about they release a design overhaul to the iphone pro & max series. The iPhone pro max design is aging and needs a revision like the iMac

It doesn’t matter if the camera lenses stick out…I’m sick if the chase for thin devices. I want things that work, stand up to everyday use and, if portable, last a long time.

"the iPhone 17 Air battery will purportedly be around 6mm thick, suggesting that the device itself will be thicker than this."

Really, a device containing a 6mm battery could be thicker than that? Tell me more.
It's just a suggestion, it's not mandatory

Many people carry their phones in their pants pockets, where thickness can be an issue, especially if they also carry their wallet in the same pocket (ask me how I know).

If Apple is willing to achieve such extreme, then by all means go for it. They have a large enough following that even if only one iPhone was sold, they’d still make record profit YOY.

Now that I’m thinking about it, Apple really doesn’t need to release multiple iPhones every year. Release one, and use previous generation as their segmented product lineup, just like before. Should still work well today.

All they need is 3 variants updated every year:
iPhone (replacing SE) $499
iPhone Air (replacing iPhone) $799
iPhone Pro/Max $999

No selling last year’s phone. Just 3 variations.

Even better.
iPhone of a mini size, $499
iPhone Air, iPhone Pro size, $799
iPhone Pro, iPhone Pro Max size, $999.
The bigger the iPhone the better it is.
Simple to understand and simple to market.

And it's not like the ship is sinking. They're just bored of the cruise. And the cruise directors.

I don't know if it needs to be super exciting every year. It's not like there's a whole lot wrong with it now. Certainly nothing that couldn't be fixed with a year off the constant new feature treadmill.
Agreed. I wish they took a step back from yearly updates and waited for bigger innovations.

This whole renewed focus on thinness is misguided in my opinion. My new iPad Pro is supposedly crazy thin. And yet it has done nothing for my day-to-day use of the device but make the cameras much worse.

If I had to my tin foil hat on, I'd theorize that this is artificial "reset" of an already matured device. With the iPhone Air they can start again at one camera, then give you two, eventually three. A smaller screen compared to the Max with a bigger option coming at some point. The introduction of a Pro chip rather than the base chip sometime down the line. All of this to give the impression of continued innovation when in reality you already had devices doing these things for years.

It seems like they are intent on solving a problem that nobody has instead of building a smaller iPhone, adding faceid to the MacBook, or having user accessible power buttons.

Just use the comparison on the website, it clearly shows that the Air is better than the base iPad.

It’s really just the name that’s the problem. “Air” doesn’t mean anything anymore. It’s come to mean “the version one up from the base model” but that’s far from obvious. And in some cases there isn’t even a base model to compare it to. There is no just plain “MacBook” anymore, for example.

This product seems odd to me... I feel like there's something that the "analysts" and "insiders" are missing here..... Supposedly this will replace the plus... with lesser specs than the pros but more expensive, just because its like 1mm thinner....... Something just doesn't compute to me... I think this will be a much different product than what we are hearing right now

I think they're going to try to push it to the same depth as the iPhone 6: 6.9 mm. Any thinner will require a new battery design, and I don't think Apple wants CATL or BYD to make the battery.
