If Apple's historical excuse for the giant camera tumor is that it's there to accommodate the giant camera modules, what's the excuse for that stupid bar sticking out that far while extending all the way across the phone?
Still more new camera bits?

Siri, AI, especially....god damn....

I asked Siri for the current time in GMT, and it couldn't even give me a straight answer and it kicked me off to Google Search! Soooooooo bad!!!
Siri: "GM is an automobile manufacturer located in Detroit, Michigan, and currently they don't drink tea there as much as in the UK."

It just seems overdesigned. There’s a lot of empty space in the middle of that bar on the back. And if the camera lens itself protrudes from the bar, then the phone won’t even lay flat without rocking (assuming there’s no case on it). But once there’s a case on it that is flush with the camera, the thinness goes away.
Apple's case design guidelines (since 13) already gave up on making the case thick enough to flatten the camera bump.

Even with cases, the camera bump is not going to get flattened except for some specialty/extra shock protection cases

The only reason I can think for it is there's a periscope zoom lens in that section and they need the thickness for that

YouTube channel Front Page Tech today revealed the alleged design of Apple's widely-rumored "iPhone 17 Air" model, set to launch later this year.

"iPhone 17 Air" render created by @zellzoi for Front Page Tech

In a video uploaded today, Front Page Tech shared renders depicting what it believes is likely the final design of the "iPhone 17 Air." The device is expected to feature an ultra-thin design that measures just 5.5mm at its thinnest point, and the renders show an all-new camera bar across the top of the device's rear shell. On the left side of the bar is a single rear camera, and on the right side there is a microphone and an LED camera flash.

The renders are consistent with an alleged "iPhone 17 Air" shell that surfaced last month.

Watch the video below.

Last week, Front Page Tech shared alleged "iPhone 17 Pro" renders showing that the camera bar will apparently extend to that device as well.

Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser has been a well-known tech YouTuber for more than a decade. Like most sources, he has a mixed track record with Apple rumors, with some hits and some misses. In 2020, he was the first source to reveal the design of the AirTag, many months before it was announced. He also shared many accurate details about the iPad mini 6, months before that device was announced. On the other hand, he and others were wrong about the Apple Watch Series 7 having flat edges, although perhaps Apple tested such a design.

Prosser also claimed that iOS 19 will introduce a redesigned Camera app with a visionOS-like design, including translucent menus and buttons.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series in September, and additional design-related rumors will likely surface before then.

Welcome back bending phones in the pants. Thanks.

I get the notion that the record-breaking(?) thinness of the chassis(main body) is, partially, achieved by squeezing more components into the camera bump (rear camera area?) than in any previous iPhone. Maybe even parts that have nothing to do with the rear camera but just can't fit into the main body.

This would maybe also be another reason why it only gets a single rear camera instead of two or three.

Considering the notable decrease in the iPads Pro thinness between the M4 and the M2 models, it would seem that the extremely thin M4 design can only be achieved by doing away with one or more rear cameras and maybe utilizing that space for other components.

And on that note, is iPhone Air going to also have one of the worst main body to camera bump ratios we have ever seen? It seems like it and it ain't cute, if you ask me. 😟

Every 5 years it seems like the engineers has completely forgotten the past bendgate drama and are releasing something that resurrects it again. The iPhone air might be the same thing all over again.
Watch out for heaps of "will it bend, blend, mend, shend or trend" TikTok/youtube videos.

Two (out of an overcrowded four "current" model lineup) iPhones with a single camera backpedaling on Spatial Video, Portrait Mode, and other recent headline features? Seems unlikely. Makes more sense if this replaces the SE, but unfortunately, Tim splurging on new tooling and development for that also seems unlikely. Could that strip be hiding a wide-angle camera whose lens chain doesn't need quite as much depth as the extra-bulge one?

Yes, keep it out of your jeans pocket, except this one will crack right across - glass don't bend like aluminium did on the 6.

If this single camera is the best camera in all the iPhones, plus it has promotion, I may consider it. Otherwise, I cannot see giving up the pro camera system if this is not the case.

I can only hope Apple has done this type of testing.
I wonder tho, could the hunt for a thin design actually make a devices heavier if its going to have a rigid construction?
Thinking that you might need to compensate for the thinness that makes the design weaker with beefier internals that add weight?

I'm guessing they are seeing how thin they can make a phone, so they know how thick their slider/clam shell model will be.

Would it? Or would it just look like a slightly thinner version of the same iPhone design we’ve had for the past 5 years? It looks uninspired and boring.
Yes and no, if it's way thin, it could look quite good. Motorola made a thing about it with Razr.

WHOA; I was completely prepared to be perceived a dinosaur, but they actually still make phones and with that same name.
