I’m sure this is just a total coincidence.

Samsung has always acted like little brother
Rumors about Samsung working on slim devices have been going for longer, and they already did launch such a device on the market: the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition was internally known as the Galaxy Fold 6 Slim.

So unless you're implying Apple is copying Samsung; yes, this is just a coincidence.

Lets completely disregard that neither companies can make up plans for such a device on a whim here...

Still don't really believe this is a thing, it just doesn't make any sense to me in the lineup. Almost seems like some sort of testing device for a foldable.

It's time to get excited for the ALL NEW iPhone Air! This is the thinnest advancement in the iPhone since the original iPhone! This changes everything, all over again!

It seems so simple to me, surely I'm missing something. Seems they just need three iPhones. Small, medium, and large. And I guess a Pro variant of the larger two, so five. I don't think they can make a true Pro Mini with current technology, it would be too dense anyway.

There are tons of people who want a smaller phone. I've used my phone less and less and my Mac more and more, it's really beneficial to have a small phone because its true purpose is portability. And people who want larger phones are already being addressed.
3 sizes 2 of which nobody buys, sure .

There aren't tons of people who want a smaller phone, Apple has the actual numbers which were so bad that they killed the 13 mini a year before the regular size 13 (while for example keeping the 14 plus in the linup alongside the regular 14).

These rumors suggest that, as far as I'm concerned, the most interesting upcoming iPhone might be the new SE.
My iPhone 12 is still OK and absolutely nothing has encouraged me to "upgrade" since 2020... Apple's obsession with thickness is not even funny anymore. It's just tiring. So if AI is worth an upgrade (TBD), "SE4" will be my best option.

None asked for these devices so what the hell is up with this trend of making the devices slimmer and slimmer at the expense of other things?

Subtraction saves a bit of cost per unit. "Same great price" or higher fattens the margin. Fans will just pay. Execs earn their bonus. Shareholders rejoice. Repeat the cycle next year(s).

I'll take a guess on the biggest compromise. If you're okay with middling battery life, maybe this is the device for you. Me? I look for the device with the better battery that I won't have to replace for three or four years.

I can buy the iPhone Air's reduced thickness if it also included a proportionate reduction in weight, by an ounce or so. The 16/16 Plus weighs weighs 6 oz./7 oz. with their aluminum bodies, while my 15 Pro weighs 6.6 oz. By contrast, the 6/6 Plus weighed 4.6/6.1 oz. As great as the 15 Pro still is, it feels like a brick in my pocket.

Not that I think it's going to be a bad product, but... Who asked for this, exactly?
I don't expect companies to be just production engines of what people wish. I hope they can figure out what people will really like. No one asked for a big, touchscreen smartphone before the iPhone.

Exactly. Of all things to start from, I don't understand why choosing thinness as top priority helps anything.

We've been through all this before. Anyone remember the Motorola RAZR? Cool for its time, but the buttons were remarkably similar to the bad times of the Apple keyboards. Even for a flip phone it made sacrifices to be that thin.

If they just want to show off that they can make a thin smartphone, great I guess? Why not use that extra millimeter to put in more battery?
Moto RAZR is hardly something to use as a cautionary tale, as it was one of the biggest successess Motorola had.

Two things can be true at the same time. I’m convinced that an iPhone “Air” will be offered for sale. But it can still be the testing device (for the real world) that you’re talking about. Actually, I think placing the Air in the Plus’s slot in the lineup makes sense. But that’s just me.

Current base model iPhones are already very light. And the Pros are dense due to the stuff inside them, not much way around that. You really think the thinness will be that noticeable? In a good way, I mean?

Again, absolutely. Go look at or pick up an iPhone 6, it's actually unbelievable how thin it is.

My wife loved her 12 mini. She was disappointed when I got her the 15 (non-pro).

That mini form factor needs to come back
