It's annoying how they intentionally hold products back and it often ends up backfiring. Like the iPhone 6 with 1GB RAM aging a lot quicker than the 6S with 2GB. Or the iPhone 15 getting excluded from Apple Intelligence when it was the current model at its unveiling, come on now.

So the regular 17 will basicially be two generations behind the pro for the SOC? The 16 is one generation behind the 16 Pro as it is and is basically using the 15 Pro SOC. At this point either buy a Pro or buy the "e" model.

This is really a slap in the face to customers and it just shows that Apple believes many of its customers don't understand technology.....because they don't.
The iPhone 16's A18 is pretty much as good as the A18 Pro in general use AFAIK. I was hoping they would keep the Pro and standard on the same generation moving forward, but it sounds like they're going back to making them a watered down version of last year's Pro. (And I considered potentially getting a 17 as an upgrade from my 16 Pro for less weight, guess not.)

So it’s just the iPhone 16s ?
Makes absolutely no sense and the fact that it’s going up to 6.3 inch screen means anything you had for the 16 model now won’t fit this new model because of that .
Slight difference but same phone

No, the Iphone 16's A18 performs basically the same as the Iphone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip. So anybody buying an iphone 17 will basically have the same computing power as an Iphone 15 Pro.

In what tasks specifically? The Geekbench score of the A18 is much closer to the A18 Pro than the A17 Pro.

90hz screen is a total Apple move. No chance they put ‘ProMotion’ in a base iPhone, Timmy would never stand for that. It wil be gimped, don’t worry.

Honestly I think they are going to use full fat Pro-motion displays (120 hz VRR) as its basically old technology now (8 years old), and probably cheaper to manufacture than 60 hz screens due to economies of scale. Apart from the regular iPhones (60 hz), practically all mid range Android phones upwards use 120 hz VRR displays.

I'm seeing different benchmarks than that. With CPU Mark the A18 barely beats the A17 Pro, and both are way behind the A18 Pro. If you look closely you can see that the A18 is basically a modified A17 Pro chip. I guess the iphone 17 will basically be the 16 with a bigger display and better refresh rate.

Regardless, this news if true makes the iphone 17 very disappointing to me.

lol. At Apple:
- So how are we gonna make this years model seem like an upgrade? Anyone?
- … how about we just change the name this year?
- Sure, it’s the last year the base model exists anyway.

2026: iPhone e (essential), Air and Pro.

The latest rumored specs for the iPhone 17 base model are underwhelming.

In a research note with equity research firm GF Securities this month, Apple analyst Jeff Pu said that the lowest-end iPhone 17 model will be equipped with the same A18 chip that is used in the iPhone 16 base model. The chip will continue to be manufactured with TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, known as N3E, he said.

The ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air is expected to have an A19 chip, while the iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to have an A19 Pro chip. Both of those chips are expected to be manufactured with TSMC's third-generation 3nm process, known as N3P.

Pu also expects the iPhone 17 to be equipped with 8GB of RAM, matching the iPhone 16.

Last month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 17 Air and both iPhone 17 Pro models will all be equipped with an increased 12GB of RAM. He said that Apple was still deciding on 8GB or 12GB of RAM for the iPhone 17 base model at that time, and if Pu's information is accurate, the company has settled on 8GB for the device.

Overall, the base iPhone 17 is shaping up to be a minor upgrade over the equivalent iPhone 16, with both devices expected to have the same overall design. Key new features that are rumored for the iPhone 17 include a 120Hz display and a 24-megapixel front camera, compared to 60Hz and a 12-megapixel front camera on the iPhone 16.

The base iPhone 17 will also feature a slightly larger 6.3-inch display compared to the 6.1-inch iPhone 16, according to display industry expert Ross Young.

Apple is expected to unveil the entire iPhone 17 series in September.

Why wouldn’t they just stick with the A19 chip and 12GB of RAM if they’re gonna raise the price anyway, just so Apple can push us to buy the 17 Air for those specs even though it only has one camera and a single mono speaker?

So it will reuse same chassis, same cameras, same technology, processor? Basically an iPhone 16.5 at this point. Or better to say, iPhone 2025🤣

We will just have to wait and see but I’ve been thinking that Apple is going to pull something out of their sleeve and not give us the full pro-motion, even though that’s arguably the only real major knock many people have on the base iPhone. Which is why I suspect Apple to continue to differentiate the Pro models with the slightly slower screen refresh rate.

I guess this bodes well for 8GB RAM iPhones. The likes of 15 Pro/Pro Max and 16 series will be getting updates for a VERY longtime.

That being said, glad the 17 Pro and Pro Max will get 12GB RAM, hoping they get unique features that take advantage of the extra RAM.
