The plus phones have never hurt the pro max sales though. It seems that a lot of people who like the largest phone just buy the pro max

Only because the Plus models were always handicapped.

14 Plus = last gen chip, no Dynamic Island
15 Plus = last gen chip, no ProMotion
16 Plus = smaller display than 16 Pro Max, no ProMotion

17 Plus if following the same formula as 17, would have 6.9-inch ProMotion, 256GB, and no price increase.

Who would have guessed? 256GB storage, ProMotion, 6.3-inch display, no price increase. Basically almost everything the Pro model comes with. Of course the base iPhone 17 is the leader.
It isn’t the leader, though, as the Pros still make most of the unit sales. (I say this as someone who isn’t interested in the Pro models.)

Then where's the differentiation from the Pro Max? A single camera? The base 17 buyers got a great deal that doesn't come around too often with Apple products. Don't expect such generosity again for a long time.

I currently use an iPhone 16e and plan to upgrade to iPhone 17e next year. I hope Apple is taking notes that one major improvement that's 60Hz to 120Hz display upgrade made many people buy the base iPhone 17 model and I hope they will bring it to iPhone 17e as well and I'm sure it will boost sales.
Why would they want to boost 17e sales if it makes them less margin?

Apple's iPhone 17 lineup is selling well enough that Apple is on track to ship more than 247.4 million total iPhones in 2025, according to a new report from IDC.

Total 2025 shipments are forecast to grow 6.1 percent year over year due to iPhone 17 demand and increased sales in China, a major market for Apple.

Overall worldwide smartphone shipments across Android and iOS are forecast to grow 1.5 percent, primarily because of the success of the iPhone.

Back in October, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple is expecting to set a new all-time revenue record in the December quarter, and a best-ever revenue record for the iPhone. Apple believes overall revenue will grow 10 to 12 percent year-over-year.

Apple has seen strong interest in the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro models, even though the iPhone Air hasn't performed as expected.

Next year, Apple plans to change its iPhone release timelines. The high-end iPhone Fold and the iPhone 18 Pro models will come out in September 2026 as usual, but the lower-priced iPhone 18 will be held until spring 2027.

IDC predicts that the decision will drop iOS shipments by 4.2 percent in 2026, while a global memory shortage will lead to supply constraints and price increases across the smartphone market. Total global smartphone shipments could decline 0.9 percent in 2026 due to the supply issues and Apple's lineup changes.

Makes sense, the base iPhone 17 is great value for money and the 17 Pro range are truly Pro in every way.
Well deserved by Apple. 😁
Absolutely enjoying my 17 PM.

Larger main sensor. Third camera lens. Pro chip. More RAM. USB 3.0. Potentially chassis material and better cooling.

14/15/16 Plus were just so handicapped. All the above was missing, plus a worse display. All of that made it unfavorable.

These figures are mind boggling! They mean that Apple is manufacturing and selling 677,808 phones every day. That’s 28,242 an hour, 470 a minute and 7.85 phones every second! 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! As I said, Mind Boggling!!
They have been selling that many for around ten years now. This is yearly unit sales in millions from 2007 to 2024:

As you can see, it really started to pick up after Steve Jobs died. ;)

Again it is the REGULAR iPhone 17 that is setting records, not the Pro and certainly not the Air.

The two people I know with a mini are near retirement age.

It's a phone for people who aren't glued to the screen, as most under 25 are.
Yeah, that would be me. I like my phone to be able to stay in my pocket. My 13 mini was perfect for taking 30,000+ videos and photos on my Appalachian Trail thru hike and as my daily driver. Not everyone wants a giant phone. But I know sales were poor for the mini. Perhaps Apple could just make one every 3-4 years, and not make a *ton* of them. Just enough to have those who like the mini, upgrade every 3-4 years.

I have a 13 mini and have used it since 2022. Let me just say I'm am becoming less and less thrilled by it. 6.1 is kinda big. 5.4 is kinda small. Really just wish they made a 5.8 still. That was perfect.
Agreed. iPhone XS was peak iPhone. If the hardware was up to scratch I’d still be using one today.

The reason why iPhone 17 Plus doesn't exist is because it would threaten 17 Pro Max. The Air only exists as an attempt to raise ASPs by offering less features for $999, not because there's hidden demand for thin phones.
The most interesting thing for me is that iPhone has been touted all over media both digital (YouTubers/big “tech influencers”) and traditional (Bloomberg, WSJ etc…) as this big failure in terms of the AI race (which it certainly is) that is in major trouble…and yet despite all this huge competition that is so ahead in AI, the iPhone 17 range is the one boosting phone sales globally while most manufacturers are seeing flat growth or even declines.

Goes to show how little the industry cares about AI and it being a major sales factor for smartphones. I guess most people figure that they can just download ChatGPT, Gemini etc…on the phone hardware they want (iPhone) and continue on with their favourite manufacturer, crazy disconnect.

Here you go; screenshot from yesterday: 26.1, and this bug is in every messages chat after just a few back-and-forths. A reboot fixes it, for about 10 messages. Annoying as hell! 😩

Can you say more about that screenshot that isn't working right? You're not able to scroll to the end? I see the same view when I pull up the keyboard, but I can still scroll the conversation and/or swipe the keyboard away. I'm not arguing, just trying to understand.

Half the conversation is behind the keyboard and it stays there. There is no way to see it, well as long as the keyboard is visible. When the keyboard appears, the conversation doesn't move up and above it.

I can close the app altogether, re-open the app and then conversation and it has the same issue. A reboot fixes it for a little while.

Gotcha. So you can't pull the conversion up to be fully above the keyboard. That sucks.

There’s nothing revolutionary in any of the iPhone 17 models. It’s business as usual with another incremental iPhone update.
What may be driving the increased sales is simply … it’s time for a lot of people to get newer devices (because planned obsolescence is built into the OS).
Sure, there isn't any thing revolutionary, but unlike the 16 series that added things that no one cared about (Apple Intelligence and Camera Control button) the 17 series added things that people actually wanted (ProMotion and double the base storage). I bet when the sales figures come out the 17 will be the best selling "base" iPhone in years.

I’ve never had that happen on either my iPhones 13 Pro max & 17 Pro Max with the latest iOS 26.1… If you’re having an issue like take it in to Apple & see if it’s fixable. If your iPhone is too old then it’s time to upgrade. 👍🏻

This report doesn't seem to specify that?
Just have a look at what phones you have to wait for. The regular iPhones have been selling like hotcakes, double the storage, promotion, larger screen, all for the same price. It’s not hard to see why.
