What’s different this year is that I unenrolled from the iPhone Upgrade Program, so the incentive to upgrade annually took a big hit. The plan is to ride it out with my silver 17PM (which was only purchased ~2 months ago) until they make some significant changes to the PM.
That was my plan, too. Especially since the display lottery was so bad this time around. But I'm actually going to give the 18 PM a chance after all - I'm just too curious. If it doesn't convince me, I'll just return it.

Among the rumored changes from the 17 to the 18, which are motivating you to consider upgrading?
The variable aperture on the camera, the A20 chip, and the battery: I am hoping for an eSIM-only model here in Germany, which isn't available here yet.

(But of course you're right, an upgrade isn't really necessary right now. Maybe at the moment I'm just still too annoyed about that f***** speck on the housing of my 17 PM that I just want to fling the device into a corner. 🤣)

A tiny speck on the phone that you never see since your phone is covered in cases all the time. Unless you choose to remove your case and stare at the back of your phone at that tiny speck lol. It’s going to be alright don’t make matters worse by flinging it into a corner! 😄

Haha, you are so right! 🙈 I know I'm completely overthinking it and you literally have to look for that tiny spot to even notice it. (But my inner monk needs a few days.) Thanks for the reality check, I promise I won't throw it into the corner! 😂

OK, so I’m not missing anything. The chip and battery will provide no meaningful benefit to me, and IMO the variable aperture camera is mostly hype. With such a tiny sensor, there will be very little noticeable benefit (depth of field effects are close to non-existent on these tiny sensors - this won’t change the basic physics). What we really need are larger sensors, but that means larger phones, more weight, etc. Probably the only benefit is to video shooters who sometimes need to use ND filters in bright conditions—being able to stop down will help with that.

I understand the feeling. The issue, which I’ve only learned through hard experience, is that the replacement may be worse than the one it’s replacing. Good luck either way!

You are absolutely right. The lottery is real. I had to go through multiple exchanges just to get a good display on my 17 PM…
Honestly, I’ll probably end up skipping the 18 PM, or at the very most, I'll give it exactly one chance. I'm definitely not going down that rabbit hole again.
