Will it be slim like that?

These rumors just keep getting weirder.

At first, the Slim was rumored to be a replacement for the Plus. That makes sense--the Plus is the worst-selling iPhone, just as the Mini was. They've had trouble with their "fourth option". But now we're hearing that the new fourth option is going to be an even more premium phone? "Above Pro Max" is also just strange marketing. I thought "Pro Max" was supposed to the pinnacle. Now there's going to be an "even more Pro Max" phone?

Why not just make the entire line thinner and lighter, if it's possible?
Because they need to lock down the only meaningful change in years behind a higher paywall.

Apple's a wee bit bigger than when Jobs came back and had to borrow money from Bill Gates to keep the doors open. You can't be this much bigger and have hardly any products. No other multi-trillion-dollar company has fewer main products... including the biggest of big oil.

That's the type of thinking that got Apple into trouble in the first place. They had such a huge product line and were really unfocused. When Jobs came back, he stripped down the product line which brought with it a ton more focus. That's when the company took off.

There's plenty of innovation at Apple, but they're missing the passion Jobs had. Feels too corporate and cookie cutter. Not willing to take huge risks with a potential huge payoff. I don't count Vision Pro as a huge risk with a huge payoff. It was just stupid to release something like that now. There's no big payoff until many, many years later.

Totally agree

The product lines lack a tight focus on "making just the best options for consumers"

It's not an accident

Tim wants a SKUfest with products all over the map, all slightly gimped here and there to drive upgrade sales
The lineups are designed around getting you to bump up a notch or bump up an overpriced component, etc

Maybe good business, but garbage experience for customers

I get that, but 4 different apple pencils, an ipad air that has to use the old keyboard and despite being "not pro" has to use the pro pencil. An Air that's actually heavier than the pro etc.... far too fractured and illogical.

Oh well. The Plus was perfect for me so clearly it couldn’t last. We’ll just have to wait to see what the real phone turns out to be. But it’s entirely possible my next phone will be from outside the Apple ecosystem - along with my next computer and tablets. Apple’s act is getting old.

There was other word of the 17 Plus becoming a 17 Slim, but more premium than the Pro Max doesn't make sense to me

In fact the 16 Plus is the only one in the line to decline in battery size, so it seems like they're reconjiggering the line so that the Plus doesn't have OP battery life compared to the higher ASP Pro

If the slimmer 17 is actually an "Ultra" on top of the Pro, can it be so without sacrificing battery mah? And then the 16 Pro likely finally getting graphene and better cooling to prevent SoC throttling and display dimming which is still prevalent...Did we really need the next one to go slimmer?

What I thought the Ultra would be was quite the opposite, a durable without the case, very long lasting on battery iPhone, a la Watch Ultra

Were there complaints that the iPhone was too thick? Is the goal to be able to fold it like origami into little birds and squirrels?

It seems to me that this is not a clamored-for feature.

Longer battery life? You bet. Wifi 7? Absolutely! OLED or MicroLED screen? Sure. Much, much better Siri? About time. But, putting the iPhone on a diet? Nah.

It's always looked lithe and sexy to me.

The latest being the fracturing of even the latest M4 iPads.... oh you want the "Pro" pro, you must get 1TB plus.

Literally the only ones complaining are macrumors posters.

For the average customer (seeing as I used to sell these) it’s fine.

Case in point my dad. He got a new phone.

1. Price-

He didn’t want to spend anything close to 1000.

That automatically knocked all pro and pro max out.

2. He wanted something that wasn’t tiny

That knocks out the Se.

3. Good enough camera

The base or plus camera is fine.

4. Not too big

That knocks the plus model out.

Hence why he ended up with a 15 base model.

The device will have somewhere between a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display size, the report adds. Other potential features mentioned include an aluminum chassis, an A19 chip, and an improved front camera.

Ok, so it's clear at this point The Information is guessing the positioning of this product.

There is no chance a smaller display with aluminum chassis will be positioned above Pro Max. Chances are, this is a Slim that simply replaces Plus. The price tag could go up, no way it'll be above Pro Max.

“Major redesign” - it’s still going to be a slab, other than a foldable, nothing is going to change that.
But, people will buy it…
I say this with the utmost respect, but: Ewww.

I hate the idea of a folding phone. The reason most phones are slabs is because it's pretty much the optimal form factor.
