The iPhone Air would be a huge upgrade for you in every meaningful way and would offer zero compromise, so not sure what you mean by that.
I do a lot of photography and videography, and the Air wouldn’t be as capable as the Pro (or even my mini). I want stereo microphones and the ability to shoot macro. So that narrows my choices. Also the Air is even larger than the Pro, but with less battery life.

I ordered the blue because it felt the least two-toned. Don’t mind the look of the orange but I wish the silver back cutout was more silver. It really looks white in some photographs/videos.
Yes this exactly! I wanted a black/space gray and with neither of these available I really thought I'd go with the silver. I just can't look past the white cut out on the back. I usually put a clear case on my iPhone because I love the way they look. This will be the first year since the 3G that I use a full black case to cover the phone. Even with the blue I will be getting.

Literally, that's not true at all. Find an actual list of the new features to see for yourself. Among other things, there's the vapor chamber to help keep the internals less hot so when the iPhone is being used for heavy-duty tasks, there's a much smaller chance that it will need to throttle down its speed and the display's brightness.
I think they like many others over-used "literally" incorrectly and meant figuratively. As you are correct that there is a list of actual/literal upgrades and improvements other than the camera upgrades.

White and silver for me. Always go for the white or silver option as the camera bump is neutral and looks good with any case colour

Also silver/white is classic apple.

Which iPhone has Apple released to date looks uglier than the iphone 17 pro?

Neither one of those is a 4S. One is a white 3G the other is the gold 5. Both ugly phones and much worse looking than the 17 pro in my opinion. I loved my black 4. That was one of my favorites.
I know, I was just saying that the 4s was the best looking iphone.... because it came in white. And there is my fixation with classic silver/white apple.

The 4(s) with it's "ice cream sandwich" look is timeless.

Are you sure you don’t wanna switch your opinion to, “they seem ugly, but I’ll know conclusively once I have them in hand, in person” ? That would make more logical sense. But what do I know

No, I'm good. And while I realize you are implying that I'm illogical for feeling this way, or just basing this on knee-jerk reaction, and I totally understand the concept of subjectivity, I can say that, in my personal opinion, from all the hands-on demo pics and vids I've seen, they are the most unattractive iPhones Apple has ever made. Even removing orange and blue from the equation as the sort of "bold" color options and focusing purely on "safe" silver, notice the way the back ceramic shield charging panel doesn't match at all (even in Apple's own images). Not with the aluminum or antenna bands. It's definitely a...choice. And while I'm sure they're way more robust than any Pro model Apple has ever made, which is a good thing for consumers but I'm guessing mainly serves their own desire to lower warranty claims, all you have to do is compare stock images of the 17 Pro with ANY stock image of ANY prior Pro model iPhone and tell me with a straight face that it's a better looking phone.

Also, and not for nothing, but wasn't part of the rumored switch from titanium to aluminum to help shave weight? Honestly that's all I was looking forward to as an excuse to upgrade from my 15 PM. And that obviously didn't happen. So my guess is this is a fork in the design road for iPhone, with the Air model (which BTW I find very good looking but unfortunately hampered by the expected downgrades given it's thinness) leading toward future foldables and the Pro model leaning into it's chunkiness and going the way of Apple Watch Ultra.

But what do I know.

I love the orange (would prefer red though).

The antenna lines on the silver make me think of the iPhone 6 / 6S design, my least favorite iPhone design of all time.

I don’t know what you know, but let’s find out what you know. I have the 15 Pro Max too. Next month will be a full two years that I’ve had the phone. Not sure yet which phone in the lineup I’m going for, yet. But if I had a similar concern as you regarding weight, I would opt for the iPhone 17. Because now it has promotion, and if you look at the comparison on Apple‘s website it really is not missing much from all the upgrades from the pros unless you’re a hard-core photographer or videographer or content creator. It comes in at 177 grams. I was actually surprised that the base 17 pretty much has everything the pros have except for a few key things in cameras and video. But you know yourself and your use case. I’ve always purchased a pro max but I find out that I don’t use all the camera stuff or all the video stuff. I just shoot the basic photos and videos. Will you be using Pro Rez log or gen locker or whatever else that’s in there?

So I would ”settle” for the iPhone 17 and that would symbolize me skipping this year but at the same time benefiting from most of the upgrades from the 17 line this year. Weird way of thinking about it, right? If you get the best trade-in value for your 15 pro Max and jumped to the base 17 the difference in money would be much smaller too.

Knowing the little that I know of you just from the last couple of responses , I’m gonna guess you’re going to casually dismiss this post. This wasn’t an attempt to convert you. I think I was also just thinking out loud for myself when it’s coming to make a decision for the 17 line this year.

I bought the first iPhone on launch day. Since they every iPhone I bought, other than the 3G, was black or space grey.

It’s so weird that they didn’t include what is arguably the most popular or one of the most color options on their high end product.

Maybe Apple had black fatigue? All is not lost because you still have the base 17 phone that has black and the iPhone air. I would argue for most people the 17 is finally a legitimate iPhone, especially with the promotion and it parallels the pro in almost every single upgrade, except in some camera and video features. But how many photographers videographers and YouTube content creators do we have walking around on Mac rumors?

Oh there’s no question that the 17 Pro would be a dramatic upgrade, but you might want to take this into consideration, if you can:

My guess is the 1mm thick band of titanium bonded around the aluminum frame of the 15 and 16 Pro models imparted a significant amount of strength, and Apple had to compensate for removing that band, so they made the aluminum substantially thicker and/or denser to impart similar strength, and thus the weight of the 17 Pro models is essentially the same as in the 15 and 16 Pros. The thicker battery also probably adds a noticeable amount to the weight.

Agreed, really not a fan of the white looking cutout on the silver. If it was silver it’d look much nicer. Maybe they couldn’t get the ceramic stuff to colour code in production for some reason as I can’t imagine this is by design.

I saw that. It would be yet another incremental upgrade over the current model. But the 17 Pro would probably take care of my needs for quite a while. If not, I could always trade up next year.

Objective means measurable. Battery life, weight, chip speed those are objective. Calling a design objectively the worst makes no sense, because aesthetics are subjective. You can dislike the look, fair enough, but that’s opinion, not fact. Otherwise you’re just dressing up a hot take as truth.
There are absolutely objective ways to measure design. You may still have a feeling one way or another about it but anything that has been designed has been measured. Design and aesthetics have been studied for thousands of years. People are employed, after going to specialized design schools, to apply our collective history to the design of objects. Certainly, when comparing an object to its own relatively short lineage, it’s not unreasonable or difficult to say an object is better or worse looking in an objective manner.

I genuinely want to know, if you do a lot of photography and videography, why are you using a phone and not a camera?

I could not disagree more. There is a very wide divide between the looks of the 17 Pro and every other iPhone before it. Not until you get to the 14 (maybe 13 or even 12) do you get into the ugly category. Everything before was sexy. The aesthetic problems began when Apple turned the phone into a camera. As a camera, you might argue the 17 pro is sexy. As a phone, especially compared to other iPhones, it’s 💩
