I have just upgraded from an iPhone 15 Pro to iPhone 17 Pro and I immediately noticed that the rear and front facing cameras are making an audible clicking like sound.

You can hear it when you open the Camera app. You can also hear the front facing camera make a click sound when FaceID is prompted. Anyone else experiencing this with their device?

I don’t hear anything on my 17PM. I held it right up to my ear while opening the camera.

Saw someone mention this earlier today. Yikes!! I’m picking mine up tomorrow, and hope it won’t be the case. That’s a pretty big issue for Apple to miss.

eta: Wonder if it’s both, or just the Pro OR PM.

There is a hissing sound when I open up the camera app. I have to hold my ear up to the camera as I open the camera app but the sound is for sure there.

Deffo an issue then. Software related I would assume.

I have this, as well. I have to hold it to my ear to hear it. Goes away when I switch from back camera to front camera.

Is the clicking like one click when you switch front to back each time, or is it a constant clicking while having the camera app open?

Well, this all sounds bad…

My 17 Pro Max and my wife's 17 Pro both have clicking and hissing. The microphone is picking up the hissing when recording video.
Yeah, I can also hear the hissing sound coming from the camera housing. Can also hear it on video. Strange.

Only when you first open the camera app. Happens in third party apps too but doesn’t seem to be as loud.

I’m having the same issue with my new iPhone 17 Pro 256GB. It’s intermittent and doesn’t happen all the time. Apple already ran an online diagnostics, and all hardware tests passed. At this point it seems like a matter of waiting to see how widespread the problem is and whether it’s hardware or software related…

Having same issue with wife’s iPhone 17 pro. Doesn’t seem to fetch anything but who knows. Hear a sound when camera app is open and phone is placed to ear , like noise or interference. The noise goes away when front camera selected but returns when swapping to rear camera.

Definitely doesn’t sound like haptics.

Same issue with my 17 Pro. Also tried turning off all system haptics, the clicking sound remains.
I'm concerned that it is a hardware issue. When I hold the phone upside down (screen facing and parallel to the floor), the sound is gone.
Can someone else confirm this?

I still have my 16 Pro alongside my 17 Pro. My 16 Pro also has a subtle hissing sound when the rear camera is open that goes away when switching to the front. Same as my 17 Pro, you can hear it if you put your ear up to the front earpiece as well as up to the camera housing on the back. The 17p’s hiss might be ever so slightly louder or maybe just a slightly higher frequency. But it’s definitely happening on both.

As for the clicking, both make a clicking sound when opening the camera app that you can only really hear if your ear is up close. It sounds to me like it’s the hardware engaging. I’ve been unable to recreate the Face ID sound mentioned by the OP.

I’ll also add that if the camera is open (17p), and my ear is focused on the rear housing, if I shake the phone I can hear the occasional very light tick/pop - I can’t make that happen on my 16p near as often, but can make it happen (goes away when camera is closed).

I think all of this might just be the stabilization hardware doing its thing.

I’m not saying the OP doesn’t have a legit concern with their unit, but when I see similar behavior on my 16p, I think it’s as designed, and we’re just in that phase of analyzing these new devices to a level only known by us forum enthusiasts. 🙂

This has me a little nervous. Supposed to pickup today. If you had heard all of this before you got your phones, would this have been a deal breaker for you?

That's interesting. To me the noise is fine when opening the camera app for the first time in a while. But when reopening it again shortly after, it gets really loud. Could you try if yours gets louder as well?
