Talked to the Apple Support today, he said it is clearly not normal. I made a video in a quiet place so that they can hear the hissing sound. He made a report directly to the engineer department and he will receive an answer in 24 hours, tomorrow I have a meeting again with him. Then talking about next steps. It is important to report that problem to the apple support, that they can find a fix for all. Could be software or hardware related. And in case of hardware, he said, I will get a new replacement straight away.

I have a iPhone 17 pro 256gb. I don’t know anybody who had this issue before, including me.

Checked another phone. Had a iPhone 14 lying around and it had a static sound coming from the camera unit. Unless all of the phones in this household are broken (17pro/15PM/14) a louder or less loud static sound coming from the camera unit if you ear is close is normal. It is the stabilizers doing their job

Regarding the “click”, everyone is aware that Apple has hardware switches for power to their cameras, right?

I see two scenarios, we’ve got some noisy switches that click when the power to their cameras camera is turned on, or the sensor stabilization hardware on some batches may be slightly out of spec (but not faulty).

My front camera never did this on any previous iPhone model, and especially not when using Face ID or otherwise moving around the OS.

Both rear and front cameras of my 16 Pro’s do slight ‘click’ when I open the Camera App. This is the sound of movable lenses when magnets that control them kicking-in.

Rear cameras has subtle ‘hissing’ sound due to hardware stabilization, I had the same noise in each of the smartphones I owned in the past including non-Apple ones.

I just bought a 17 Pro Max 256GB Silver and my phone makes a clicking sound when the camera app starts and when changing between photo and video mode (not changing the zoom). System haptic feedback switched off and in silent mode. I could also feel a vibration on the phone when the camera makes the clicking sound. Sounds and feels like a machinical issue.

I’ve used every generation of iPhone since 3GS and never had any similar issues. Tried the display phones at Apple Store and none had the same issue.

I’ve also taken videos. Returned the phone and waiting to purchase a new one when it’s restocked. (Hopefully from another batch)

Those saying they felt it on older phones, ask yourselves if it’s intermittent? Have you switched off system haptics and is your phone in silent?

Was it a clicking sound you could only hear with your ear close to the camera unit or was it noticeable during regular use. Can you share the video you mentioned?

It’s surely noticeable in a quiet environment. Sometimes loud, sometimes very soft and mostly no sound. Plus I felt the vibration (up to 10% of regular haptic) while holding the device. It doesn’t happen all the time but I can surely replicate it by changing from photo to video mode and back.

Ok. That’s different from mine. I can only hear a very soft click if I hold the device close to my ears and no vibration at all. This happens with all of the IPhones in my household. Therefore I think it is normal. What do you think?

Sounds very different from mine. Mine can be heard clearly.

So you think it is within normal specs?
That’s a delicate question. Within functional specs, absolutely.

Is it likely something Apple is going to have to tweak X step on production line Y to bring it into compliance with Apple’s specs for their user experience? Also yes. This is how mass manufacturing works. There’s probably a screw that needs an additional 1/32 of a turn somewhere or a pick and place machine that needs to be adjusted a thousandth of a newton meter somewhere in the process that will eliminate the whirring sound of the sensor stabilization assembly.

So no need to worry as long as it functions like it should. Correct?
