I still have my 16 Pro alongside my 17 Pro. My 16 Pro also has a subtle hissing sound when the rear camera is open that goes away when switching to the front. Same as my 17 Pro, you can hear it if you put your ear up to the front earpiece as well as up to the camera housing on the back. The 17p’s hiss might be ever so slightly louder or maybe just a slightly higher frequency. But it’s definitely happening on both.

As for the clicking, both make a clicking sound when opening the camera app that you can only really hear if your ear is up close. It sounds to me like it’s the hardware engaging. I’ve been unable to recreate the Face ID sound mentioned by the OP.

I’ll also add that if the camera is open (17p), and my ear is focused on the rear housing, if I shake the phone I can hear the occasional very light tick/pop - I can’t make that happen on my 16p near as often, but can make it happen (goes away when camera is closed).

I think all of this might just be the stabilization hardware doing its thing.

I’m not saying the OP doesn’t have a legit concern with their unit, but when I see similar behavior on my 16p, I think it’s as designed, and we’re just in that phase of analyzing these new devices to a level only known by us forum enthusiasts. 🙂

Yeah, same. My 16 PM has the same hissing, which I believe is part of normal function, and the back lenses also engage when the camera is opened, but I can't reproduce the Face ID clicking on it - only the 17.

I think there was a software update soon after the 14 Pro came out because of the camera module clicking or rattling in 3rd-party apps, so maybe there's something Apple can tune here.

This has me a little nervous. Supposed to pickup today. If you had heard all of this before you got your phones, would this have been a deal breaker for you?

Probably not a deal-breaker, but if I knew about it and heard it coming from my phone right there in the moment, I might've mentioned it to the person at the store to see if they could do anything - but guessing it's unlikely given low stock around this time of year... they'd probably tell you to come back after the dust of launch day settles.

It might be difficult to hear in the store environment though.

Ok I just held it up to my ear. I can hear what sounds like white noise but it’s a bit faint. Almost like a mini fan, but I can’t hear it when I hold the phone farther away.

I also tried this with my iPhone 15 PM and it does the same thing.

I’m pretty sure this is normal now.

It will be the stabilisation hardware
For me I have to have my ear right next to the camera to hear it and it sounds like it could be the image stabilisation starting. When the camera isn't in use the sensor would likely be 'locked' then when you open the camera app it's likely that the locks are released allowing the mechanism to 'float'. It's one of the few mechanical parts in a digital device so will make noises but sounds like a noise that shows its working in my case.

That's wild. Just checked mine, and sure enough, there's a static white noise coming from the rear camera when on. Closing the camera app makes the noise disappear.

That's interesting. To me the noise is fine when opening the camera app for the first time in a while. But when reopening it again shortly after, it gets really loud. Could you try if yours gets louder as well?
Mine is the same regardless (on both phones). It just has to be open regardless of how long it’s been.

Just a suggestion try not looking or hearing for faults and just enjoy the phone if it works don't worry after all it’s just a tool. Stop doing the shake and back to check your lens stack.if your camera looks good so will you.

I also have this issue when opening the camera app. This was also a problem during release on the 14 Pro/Max, which was fixed in a software update.

I went to the Apple Store today and tested 5 Pro/Pro Max iPhones and 4 of them had the same clicking sound. But it was also intermittent.

And one of my friends has also the same issue with he’s new 17 Pro

Whoa!!! Just checked and …sick feeling in my stomach. I sincerely hope they address this asap. This is some BS! How do things get released like this? Nobody tested??

Yeah, until your video recordings pick up the hiss. What are you supposed to then? I’d say the phone video is a tool, no??

I have that click and whirring sound as well when I’m using Faceid to login to the 17PM. It’s almost unnoticeable unless you are looking for it though.

Same here on my 17 Pro, there’s an audible clicking sound when opening the camera app and switching between lenses. I can actually feel it sometimes. I think it’s more noticeable because of the aluminum unibody. I also have a 17 Pro Max, which makes the same clicking sounds, but they’re much quieter, probably due to the larger surface area. For reference, my iPhone SE 2 also had a clicking sound every time I opened the camera.

Hello everyone, just wanted to chime in as well.

Picked up my 17 PM on launch day and noticed two this: on certain apps, or just normal use, there’s a crackling/sizzling noise coming from primarily the top earpiece speaker. Almost like a faint white noise as I scroll. I notice it a lot while scrolling through social media apps (X, Instagram, etc). The faster I scroll, the more apparent it is. You need to be in quiet room to hear it.

Also, when opening the camera app, or when certain apps require FaceID (like banking apps), the front camera clicks once. If I open the Camera app, and switch from front to rear camera, each one clicks once, depending on which one is active

I’m already planning to return this and buying another, but wanted to see if anyone else has the same issues

Also wanted to add, before noticing the above issues, I saw that there was a ding in the aluminum near the volume up button. It’s deep enough I feel it when running my finger across, but not deep enough where the raw aluminum shows under (I have Deep Blue).
