Or even worse, buy the product. If you believe this is a step down, vote with your $$$.
As long as people are that dumb to pay ± 70% of the RRP to an 1 year used phone and retailers sell the new one on release day with 15-20% discount here, I see no reason why I shouldn't. You may still criticizes product.

And what’s your point ? If many people will buy it, you still don’t have to do that if you don’t like it.
My point is that many people will justify the products getting worse. Just wach the DMA thread how people flame about stuff like side loading, standard apps etc, so basically things they are no even forced to use.

How can we say today it will be worse ? What if the weight goes down 30 grams thanks to the use of the new alloy ? Just an example…
We will see in September.

I hate the Dynamic Island. I wish it were gone.

I'm really looking forward to the upgraded telephoto and FaceTime cameras/lenses though.

Aluminum is soft as butter
True it is softer than titanium and steel, but in my case I don't care at all since I always use it with a case (as do most people). I'm more concerned about cracking and denting. I would guess that titanium would be less prone to cracking, but it would depend on the design of course.

One of my favorite features of iPhone Pro was steel or titanium frames. I always use my iPhone without any case and firm frame saved me dozens of times and was looking good even after multiple drops. My older aluminum iPhone XR was broken and chipped after a single drop.
Broken where ? Because the rear of the XR was glass…

Doesn't matter how they advertise, sad thing is, that even with the worst explanation/made up excuse every, many people will swallow and - even worse - defend/justify the decision.
You were making a dig at some unknown universe of people who may defend Apples choice of materials. (And this is their right)

But you didn’t talk about the article, you talked about the people.

"A smaller Dynamic Island for iPhone 17 Pro Max:"

Probaby same size dynamic island but looking smaller because the Pro Max will get an 8" display or something

Of course, they may do whatever they want. But then don't advertise it as an improvement.

Nice upgrade. The front camera hasn't changed since the last 7 years now, it's overdue.

The Telephoto lens is also a very welcome addition, but picture quality is mediocre right now. Don't just improve megapixels - it won't change anything. At least they'll also add a 12MP pixel binning algorithm most likely, like they have currently.

I hope they will find ways to improve pictures in low light conditions - I find my iPhone 16 Pro abysmal in this regard, very noisy no matter what I do with Night Mode and Exposure. I don't think the new sensor is that much of an improvement over the previous one in this regard.

Overall I'll keep my 16 Pro. They need to make the Dynamic Island go away, and appear only when needed.
It's a good idea when we need it, but not a good idea 99% of the time.

From the sounds of things, I am more interested in what the new Apple Watch will be (currently own AW7) than what the new phone will be (13 Pro Max).

There is nothing MEDIOCRE in iPhone camera today.

iPhone is almost on par with every other smartphone camera in that field. Not the best, nor the worst. Low light photography requires bigger sensors. Something very difficult to put in a phone.

It never is a good idea to upgrade year after year, anyway. A 2 years cycle is wiser… a 3 years even better (but I can hardly wait 3 years TBH).

Dynamic Island is just a way to implement a front facing camera setup requested to have FaceID working. The best Apple can do is make it smaller, iteration after iteration, thanks to integrated sensors. But to goes away they should get rid of FaceID, and I don’t think it is the plan in the near future .

For normal users, I would include software processing as part of "iPhone camera" and that is very much mediocre.

To me it honestly ruins a lot of photos with totally overdoing it

It'd be great if Apple allowed tweaking of that for stock Camera App users (that vast vast majority I'm sure)

Personally, I think Apple has prototyped an iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max with the Pixel 9-style rear camera system and a second prototype with Apple's more traditional triangular rear camera system. They'll probably make a decision on which one to go with probably by the end of January 2025.

Stock camera could be better for sure (but most of the users won’t be able to use it anyway), but there is nothing mediocre at all in current iPhone camera setup.
On the web you can find several competent reviews corroborating my point.

Well, the color actually is THE LEAST thing I’m thinking about when I buy a new phone. It is going to be covered by a cover anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️
I think they’re pretty devices so I’d never cover them up so to me the colour is pretty important. Like now I have awesome purple with cool effects and last year they came with some kind of sand colour and that was seriously the main reason for me to not upgrade.
Also wouldn’t buy a MacBook Pro as they look too boring.

May sound really simple of me but I see these devices so often and they’re always near me so I’d rather have something pretty than something someone needs to have blend in in a cubicle.

48 MP Telephoto lens? Does that mean we'll finally get 8K video recording O.O
(Not that I have a use for it, it's just cool I suppose)

Yes and no. Usually when they increase the number of pixels, they also increase the sensor size. Additional pixels sometimes also may help because of that pixel binning algorithm you mentioned, even if the sensor size does not increase significantly.

We were on a 4-year cycle, but this time it will be a 5-year cycle. I've got the 12 Pro Max, but the 17 Pro Max seemed to have most of the upgrades I wanted, that the 16 Pro Max didn't get, so I'm waiting until fall 2025.

My wife has the 14 Pro Max. I'll get her the 19 Pro Max in 2027.

BTW my older kid will get my 12 Pro Max when I upgrade, and will pass down the XR to my younger kid. All are still working fine.

Mediocre as a descriptor here is probably too far, but it's also a highly subjective discussion in terms of what we are comparing to and/or what the expectations are.

For a mobile phone camera, it's outstanding, for sure

I shoot a LOT with my iPhone, have followed courses as well, and I always find some ways to make my pictures look astounding, but I'll have to disagree about the "nothing" part.
  • The Front Camera is bad, unless you have LOTS of light. I always end up using the Rear Camera and it's hard to make a good composition when taking selfies. But it has been there since 2018 - it was great back end but it's time for an upgrade.
  • The Telephoto lens has room for improvement. I'm glad they'll address this in the 17 Pro.
  • Portrait mode - I always need to step further away from the subject and then crop my photo - no matter what lens I use. I can take the shots I want, but then I have to cut megapixels. I don't know why this happens because I have a LiDAR which should be able to detect objects in the scene.
  • Video (a bit off-topic I know): There should be a way to control the software Image Stabilization after shooting. We currently need 3rd-party apps or FCPX to do this.
The main camera lens + ultra wide lens are gorgeous. I have nothing to say against those.
The Camera app is solid - I don't see the need to use 3rd-party software.
The new 4K Slow-Mo is absolutely awesome.

Something else :
  • Telephoto : They won't address the zoom factor though. It will remain at 5X - other phones have 10X. I personally don't care that much - because you have to be on a tripod at 10X and I miss my 3X at times. I can use the main lens and zoom at a 3X equivalent factor - but it's not the same quality. But on "paper", YouTubers make the iPhone look bad because of this.
I'm not saying the iPhone is bad at photography - it's nowhere near DSLR but it's very very good. But let's be honest they didn't do a lot in iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro to improve that department. I'm glad they're finally improving stuff in 17 Pro.
