From the sounds of things, I am more interested in what the new Apple Watch will be (currently own AW7) than what the new phone will be (13 Pro Max).

really? there won't be significant changes to design this year. and for sensor, basically only high pressure, which will only show trends, and 5g probably. blood glucose (which is way more interesting) probably years away.

I hope they will find ways to improve pictures in low light conditions - I find my iPhone 16 Pro abysmal in this regard, very noisy no matter what I do with Night Mode and Exposure. I don't think the new sensor is that much of an improvement over the previous one in this regard.
1000% agree. It has been driving me nuts how bad the pictures come out in low light. Even keeping the phone on a tripod the exposure is not long enough and the pics come out grainy. Maybe I need to invest in a paid photo app, but I paid too much for this iphone pro and should allow me to do the things I want to accomplish as is.

This is my year to upgrade and I am looking forward to the camera upgrade.

Well, I'm thinking Ultra for my next watch, so for me yes. Getting that extended battery life is a nice addition. Would have bought the Ultra first gen had it been available when I bought my 7. If I had an Ultra now I probably wouldn't be interested in either update. 😁

finally a new camera design, thanks Tim
Of these renders become true, it’s another lazy update. Nothing has changed except the duo penotti on the backside.

If this really is the iPhone 17 pro, I’ll definitely will switch to a pixel 10 pro:

How about no. Maybe the 18, or 19. The camera package needs a major bump before I will upgrade from my 16Pro, or a Pro mini, that would be an instant upgrade.

I shoot a LOT with my iPhone, have followed courses as well, and I always find some ways to make my pictures look astounding, but I'll have to disagree about the "nothing" part.
  • The Front Camera is bad, unless you have LOTS of light. I always end up using the Rear Camera and it's hard to make a good composition when taking selfies. But it has been there since 2018 - it was great back end but it's time for an upgrade.
  • The Telephoto lens has room for improvement. I'm glad they'll address this in the 17 Pro.
  • Portrait mode - I always need to step further away from the subject and then crop my photo - no matter what lens I use. I can take the shots I want, but then I have to cut megapixels. I don't know why this happens because I have a LiDAR which should be able to detect objects in the scene.
  • Video (a bit off-topic I know): There should be a way to control the software Image Stabilization after shooting. We currently need 3rd-party apps or FCPX to do this.
The main camera lens + ultra wide lens are gorgeous. I have nothing to say against those.
The Camera app is solid - I don't see the need to use 3rd-party software.
The new 4K Slow-Mo is absolutely awesome.

Something else :
  • Telephoto : They won't address the zoom factor though. It will remain at 5X - other phones have 10X. I personally don't care that much - because you have to be on a tripod at 10X and I miss my 3X at times. I can use the main lens and zoom at a 3X equivalent factor - but it's not the same quality. But on "paper", YouTubers make the iPhone look bad because of this.
I'm not saying the iPhone is bad at photography - it's nowhere near DSLR but it's very very good. But let's be honest they didn't do a lot in iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro to improve that department. I'm glad they're finally improving stuff in 17 Pro.
You used the word mediocre, that have a specific meaning. There is nothing mediocre about iPhone camera setup . This doesn’t mean there is no space for improvement, of course, and in this rumors there are some good points addressed about the cameras.
The iPhone is not supposed to compete with a DSLR (replaced by mirrorless nowadays ), in quality. It is much more convenient for shots on the go, but if you really need superior quality, well a proper camera is still needed.
YouTubers rarely are a good source of information.

Aluminum — spelled aluminimum in the article — is stiffer than titanium, but less expensive. I wondered why they used titanium last time around. Maybe because titanium is less prone to cracking?
Pure metals are not used. Alloys are used, and any alloy of Ti or of Al has its own characteristics, usually very different from the pure metal.

I hate the Dynamic Island. I wish it were gone.

I'm really looking forward to the upgraded telephoto and FaceTime cameras/lenses though.

True it is softer than titanium and steel, but in my case I don't care at all since I always use it with a case (as do most people). I'm more concerned about cracking and denting. I would guess that titanium would be less prone to cracking, but it would depend on the design of course.
Pure aluminum is not used for frames, ever. Alloys (of Al or of Ti) can be quite hard.

Picture quality can easily be excellent from an iP16 Pro.
1) Shoot RAW, an easy setting.
2) Hold the iPhone camera still. Use a tripod or other bracing if you lack the hand-hold skill necessary.
3) Have reasonably adequate light.

As to low light conditions, follow #1 and #2 above and recognize that low light conditions challenge all cameras, including ILC Nikons with each lens costing as much or more than an iPhone. Lenses made to excel in low light conditions cost much more ($thousands) and weigh pounds, not grams.

Yes I'm aware. The assumption here is we are talking about the aluminum alloys that Apple is using (eg. 6061, 7075, etc.) of course.

The aluminum alloys Apple uses are not very resistant to scratches. However, I guess most of the surface scratches are probably of the anodized layer.

I know this is the least important thing, but I'm planning to upgrade this year and I'm hoping it has a more interesting colour options. It's been a while since they've done a dark green, maybe. Or a new shade of blue. Something more than just shades of grey, silver, and, gold/bronze.
Heck, just bring the base iPhone 16 colors to the iPhone 17 Pro models. Maybe bring back a RED version

Certainly there has to be some sort of design change. Quicker internals means nothing to 85% of users. I wasted $1300 on my 16PM from 15PM

Don't care how they spin it honestly, "more aluminum" on a premium, $1,200-$1,800 device is no bueno. They keep removing stuff but the price never changes. Just goes up. 3D touch, better haptic engine, photos app. It's like they're trying to piss off their user base.

Really getting to the point where I hope Matter or whatever allows me to ditch all of Apple's junk and go elsewhere. So much money and they just keep getting worse, watered down and expensive.

Plus I am not a fan of Tim Apple's million dollar donation to the clown.

Same. I hate the stupid camera button. I really wanted a new color. I won't be upgrading anymore until some really substantial stuff happens. AI is a joke.. as most AI is. Its just trash.

I think they’re pretty devices so I’d never cover them up so to me the colour is pretty important. Like now I have awesome purple with cool effects and last year they came with some kind of sand colour and that was seriously the main reason for me to not upgrade.
Also wouldn’t buy a MacBook Pro as they look too boring.

May sound really simple of me but I see these devices so often and they’re always near me so I’d rather have something pretty than something someone needs to have blend in in a cubicle.
I use a clear case.

Yup! Camera control. I've not done one thing with it but open the camera when I remember it's there. Haven't even tried doing all the adjustment crap it does. Playground and Genmoji....what a waste of time and space. The colors are so boring on the Pros. I went black this time.

All the space-grade titanium was reserved for the man-child’s Mars mission, so Apple was forced to switch back to aluminum. At least the phone will be lighter.

That square camera bump alone is a good reason to upgrade.
