iPhone 17 Pro Models Again Rumored to Feature 48MP Telephoto Camera, 12GB of RAM, and More

Can we please move on from the cameras Apple!? We get it ... every year the cameras will get better. I'm not a photographer, and don't want to be. Bring back the 'Innovating' Apple used to do. What Apple was known for.

Never going to happen but I wish they would pair a 48mp sensor with going BACK to 3x so we could get 3x AND 6x optical zoom. That makes more sense than leaving a gap between 2x and 5x and adding 10x which very few people actually need or use.
10x has been the goal zoom id wished theyd added since the 13 and I’m still waiting🤷🏻‍♂️

48 telephoto (I still ugh everyday with the 2005 potato macro shots ever since they introduced that stupid camera), 12 RAM and 2TB is when I will finally upgrade my 13PM. Actually my personal #1 rule of thumb ever since the 6S, only upgrade when they increase the RAM. That only happens once every 3-4 years.

While the iPhone 17 Pro models are still nearly a year away from launching, analyst Jeff Pu has already outlined his expectations for the devices.

In a research note with investment bank Haitong International this week, Pu reiterated his previous claim that both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a 48-megapixel Telephoto rear camera and a 24-megapixel front camera. Both the Telephoto and front cameras shoot at 12 megapixels on iPhone 16 Pro models.

He also expects the iPhone 17 Pro models to be equipped with 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB in iPhone 16 Pro models. This increase in memory would contribute to improved performance for Apple Intelligence and multitasking.

The analyst continues to believe that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a "much narrowed Dynamic Island," as a result of the device adopting a smaller "metalens" for the Face ID system. This would be the first size reduction for the Dynamic Island since it debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022.

Pu outlined a few less-surprising details that are apparently planned for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, including unchanged 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes for the devices, respectively. He also expects the devices to have an A19 Pro chip manufactured with TSMC's same 3nm process as used for the A18 Pro chip.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 Pro models in September 2025, alongside a regular iPhone 17 and an all-new, slimmer "iPhone 17 Air."

Sales data on the estimates of the 14, 15, & 16 Plus models seem to suggest that that model isn't the sales success that Apple was anticipating, given their cancelation of the Mini models, which similarly performed below expectations. I'm surprised that they'd double down on the Plus by essentially renaming it, making it thinner and probably reducing its battery life, and then taking a camera away, while also renaming it? That seems like a backwards move to keep 4 new annually released iPhones.

At some point, if you keep guessing a reasonable upgrade. It’ll happen. And then you claim “I was right all along!”

Better, or just faster?

The 6s+ had:
  • No idiotic notch or pill in the screen
  • A home button
  • A headphone jack
  • No giant camera bulge
  • No fragile glass back
  • An actual SIM card slot
The 16 Pro is stuck with a bad screen, a giant growth on the back, and is missing important features.
I don’t miss the home button but I really, really miss TouchID. FaceID is the least reliable piece of software I use. And that includes Siri! I have to enter my password by hand several times a day

I don’t know why this is, but from my vantage point, it’s a failed software

Will be great to have 48MP telephoto lens. A smaller dynamic island is also welcome. Overall from the rumors, the 17 Pro Max seems to be having very good changes.

Hopefully there will be some nice colour too. Colours on Pro models are always muted. Will be good if that changes.

For me an upgrade of the selfie-CAM and ESPECIALLY of the aged main-sensor would be much mor important than an 48 MP zoom, which will be keept nearly constant in sensor size (like this year with the ultra-wide) - which is the much more important factor.

Apple should step back to the sweet spot of a new design 4x telephoto with new 48 mpx sensor. That solution on iPhone 17 Pro models will give
- Still better absolute reach than current model even it's 4x vs 5x with the help of quad-bayer sensor
- 4x may allow better light gathering properties with possibly lower f-number, thus less noise
- 4x will probably have better optical quality vs 5x, having less aberrations
- 4x may allow closer min. focus distance, while 5x on 16 Pro has an awful 1.2 meter figure
- 4x may avoid further camera bump otherwise keeping at 5x and physically larger 48 mpx sensor
