The more I think about this, the more I feel like iPhone needs to come in the same colors and materials as the Apple Watch. There should always be the standard silver, some form of black/space gray, and whatever "fun" colors they come up with. These are items that are almost always on your person at all times and I'd like them to coordinate.

I really think of only 2 options:

1. They wanted to bring the black, but they couldn’t reliably manufacture it — see the gold iPhone X prototypes (not Xs),
2. They wanted to not discriminate the minorities, thus deliberately not offering a black phone

No, it’s the same size. (Actually 0,03 mm wider, 20.76 mm on the non-Max Pro versus 20.73 mm on the 16, according to Apple’s Accessory Design Guidelines.)

Strangely, I have a friend who has two iPhones and he doesn't use a case on either. And, miraculously, both are still in great shape! Mine would have been in terrible shape without one!

Damn. I wish I had the financial security to use unprotected iPhones. I would love to have a silver 17 Pro. It reminds me of a gorgeous silver Nagra tape machine from decades ago.

I think this really shows that the Pro is being relegated to a niche “rugged” style, while the Air has become the flagship with its much more elegant design.
Then next year the air will disappear to make way for the fold which will be like a double air with the same thickness when unfolded. This will be the new flagship.

Why Apple is doing this? Because the price and margin will be much higher on the fold than on the pro so it needs to steer the crowd towards this model. Therefore the pro will cease to be designed as the flagship.
