Always only had a black iPhone since the 5. Always wanted a blue, but it never fell in my upgrade cycle. The planets have finally aligned for me.

cosmic orange looks far better than the leaked Pantone color codes, but if you have ever seen cars that are that nice copper color, it cool for a while then not so much.

Dark blue for me, it will look good across cases especially if you like dark cases

Classic Apple move to try to push Pro buyers to the Air, which has all the usual Pro colors.

The Pro phones look significantly less premium this year, but I guess that's the Air's territory now. Can't have all of them looking good.
Maybe the Air's design and colors come from their research into a foldable. Unlike the Pro which got downgraded to aluminum, the Air got premium materials and as you mentioned got the Pro colors as well.

It would be a brilliant move on Apple's part to release a "Black edition" with an orange Action Button to match the Apple Watch Ultra later this year or early next year. I know many people prefer their iPhone in black. Maybe someone will settle for the dark blue color and buy it - then the black one will come in early 2026, BOOM then they'll get all the same buyers to buy a new iPhone again.

I assume the weird white square on the back of the clear case is due to the fact that the MagSafe rings and the Apple logo are not aligned like in previous phones, so Apple thought that would look "weird"... though I think this solution also looks pretty weird!
I agree with your rationale, and it's a tradeoff, for sure. I'm buying an orange phone, I don't want the orange to be covered with a white panel! Let me enjoy the orange!

That said, I'm buying an orange phone, so the clear choice of case is... well the clear case!

I can guarantee you that the vast majority of those who wanted black and got the dark blue instead won’t get the black 17 Pro/17 Pro Max if it materializes early next year. They will be disappointed in Apple for pulling such a stunt once again (March 2022 release of the 13 Pro in Alpine Green).
